The Goss Lemming Mouse, Synaptomys Cooperi Gossii (Goues), In Nebraska, Edson Fichter, Merle F. Hansen

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

In the course of studies on the cestode parasites of microtine rodents by one of the authors (Hansen), specimens of mice were sent to the United State National Museum where they were identified by Dr. David H. Johnson. Two of these microtines proved to be Synaptomys cooperi gossii (Coues). These specimens of Synaptomys (U.S.N.M. Nos. 282343 and 282344), collected at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, on September 16, 1946 (male) and November 20, 1946 (female), respectively, are the first ones to be identified from Nebraska.

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett Jan 1947

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

The writer, being interested in the agricultural project of cotton growing in early Dixie, and finding scarcely anything written on the subject, has gone into the original sources, histories, journals, diaries, etc., and found a reservoir of enlightenment regarding cotton culture in Utah's Dixie. He has tried to assemble from the most important sources, an informative yet interesting study of cotton culture in Utah. The writer in no wise pretends to have exhausted the subject, nor to have reached all the sources. Many of those early cotton growers who did most to produce this staple, kept no record of their …

Farm Fishponds, Verne E. Davison Jan 1947

Farm Fishponds, Verne E. Davison

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An important part of soil and moisture conservation is making the best use of every acre on the farm. Where a suitable site for a farm pond exists, no better use can be made of such land than to develop it for the production of fish for the farm family. The recreation the pond affords adds much to the pleasure of rural life.

Thousands of farms have good pond sites. Properly developed and managed ponds may provide both food and pleasure to more than a million farm people.

This bulletin tells how to have good ponds. It explains how to …

Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers Jan 1947

Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Very little information is at hand regarding the ability of molds to synthesize riboflavin. Few citations pertaining directly to riboflavin production by true

molds are available. Pontovich (1943) found as much as 2 mg riboflavin per g

of Aspergillus flavus mycelium. Tanner et at. (1945) determined the quantity of

riboflavin in the submerged fermentation media of Penicillium chrysogenum.

The highest value found was 1. 36 mg per ml. The primary purpose of this study

was to screen several hundred isolates, recently obtained from soil, crop residues,

and composts, for their ability to produce riboflavin on a wheat bran substrate.

A Redescription Of Taenia Taxidiensis Skinker, 1935, Robert Rausch Jan 1947

A Redescription Of Taenia Taxidiensis Skinker, 1935, Robert Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Since the original description of Taenia taxidiensis Skinker, 1935,2 was based on an incomplete and apparently immature cestode, a redescription seems desirable.

The following description is based on 28 cestodes, taken from three infected badgers, Taxidea taxus (Schreber), all collected in southern Wisconsin. Of these, only one strobila had gravid segments, the others being immature. Most of the data given below are based on the single mature specimen, with additional measurements, where Possible, from the immature worms. No sections were made of these specimens, and the measurements given were taken fl·om stained wholemounts.

Andrya Sciuri N. Sp., A Cestode From The Northern Flying Squirrel, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Among helminths taken from four northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus macrotis Mearns) were two cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya. These represent an undescribed species. The infected flying squirrels were collected in or near tamarack bogs during February, 1947, near Millston, Jackson County, Wisconsin.

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood Jan 1947

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The preparation and staining of biological structures for microscopic examination is of extreme importance to the science of biology since almost all phases of biological advance are, at least to some degree, dependent upon microtechnical methods. Nevertheless, research workers and students of biological science are sooner or later impressed with the inadequacy of many of the microtechnical methods used by them and their colleagues. In the field of microtechnique there is difficulty in finding standardized methods which will uniformly bring optimum results. Throughout most procedures there seem to be variables over which no definite controls have been established. Microtechniques have, …

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale Jan 1947

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Studies on trematodes of marine organisms of the Pacific Coast have been of a scattered and fragmentary nature. J. Stafford (1904) collected and described a number of trematodes from fishes of the north Pacific, but, in his historical survey, Manter (1926) fails to mention specifically any studies covering the waters south of Canada. More recently, in the United States, several contributions to the field have been made by Dr. John E. Guberlet at the University of Washington and at the College of the Pacific by Dr. Alden Noble, under whose guidance this study was made. James Park (1937) revised the …

Bulletin No. 326 - Rainfall And Irrigation In Relation To Soil Erosion, Willard Gardner, John Hale Gardner, C. W. Lauritzen Dec 1946

Bulletin No. 326 - Rainfall And Irrigation In Relation To Soil Erosion, Willard Gardner, John Hale Gardner, C. W. Lauritzen

UAES Bulletins

This paper attempts to point out to farmers, agricultural specialists, and others who may be interested, pertinent facts regarding rainfall intensity and other meteorological data that have to do with the wearing down of range and agricultural soils, and to present by means of diagrams illustrations of general relationships between the rate of wearing down of irrigated soils, the size of the irrigation stream and the slope of the eroding surface.

Large streams running down steep slopes, whether from rainfall or from irrigation, constitute a destructive process that cannot be completely controlled. Fortunately, vegetation protects the soil against the destructive …

The Nebraska Egg Cooler, I. L. Williams, F. E. Mussehl Dec 1946

The Nebraska Egg Cooler, I. L. Williams, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Every producer knows that heat is harmful to the quality of eggs, and that the first step in holding fine egg quality is prompt removal of the animal heat. The Nebraska egg cooler has been developed for this purpose. Construction costs are moderate, and repeated observations demonstrate the effectiveness of the principle. Its basic factor is the temperature-reducing effect of cool, humid air passing over the eggs, as soon as possible after they are gathered.

The Geologic History Of The Bison In The Great Plains (A Preliminary Report), C. Bertrand Schultz, W. D. Frankforter Dec 1946

The Geologic History Of The Bison In The Great Plains (A Preliminary Report), C. Bertrand Schultz, W. D. Frankforter

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

THE GEOLOGIC history of the bison in North America is a subject which has received little attention to date. Osteological rather than geological problems have been the main concern of most writers who have so far published. If the geologic history of the bison is to be learned, it will be necessary to devote more time and effort in the field in determining the age of the deposits in which various specimens have been discovered and in making more extensive collections from deposits of known age. Unfortunately the majority of the type specimens have been surface finds and little attempt …

Fusarium Conglutinens Variety Callistephi, Beach And Its Effect On The Chrysanthemum, Mary Heimick Palmer

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is the result of extensive research for the past year at Marquette University on Chrysanthemums. In particular, I refer to a specific problem, that of an attempt to ascertain with certainty the cause of a serious infection of Chrysanthemums. This treatise covers the procedure and methods used in discovering the actual pathogen, and my reasons for believing that this particular pathogen is Fusarium conglutinens variety Callistephi.

The Effects Of Estrogens On The Thyroid & Adrenal Glands Of The Male Turtle, Jeanne Frances Genrich Dec 1946

The Effects Of Estrogens On The Thyroid & Adrenal Glands Of The Male Turtle, Jeanne Frances Genrich

Bachelors’ Theses

Up to the present time there appears to have been very little research done on the thyroid or adrenal glands of the turtle. This seems to be especially true in respect to the effects of estrogens on these two glands. However, some work has been reported on other members of the reptilian family; particularly garter snakes, and more recently, the lizard.
