Drug Plants Of California, Frederick Louis Beauchamp Jan 1949

Drug Plants Of California, Frederick Louis Beauchamp

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many books and articles have been written covering the flora of California. Few, however, have dealt specifically with those plants yielding drug principles used in the materia medica of the medical and pharmacy professions. Over one thousand different species of native and introduced drug plants are growing in the state. Many of these, it is true, have fallen into disuse, either because of lack of medicinal value, or substitutes have been found in the laboratories of the chemist.

The development of the drug farming industry will not only give employment to the state’s increasing population, but will enable our nation …

4-H Club : Clothing Project "B" Plan, Anna Walker Jan 1949

4-H Club : Clothing Project "B" Plan, Anna Walker

SDSU Extension Circulars

How the teen-age girl can cover all the necessities of the wardrobe plus the · very special articles of clothing every girl loves might be answered by the slogan "sew your own, and select with care." For school the teen-ager needs clothes that are comfortable and easy to wear as well as smart. Most girls agree that Jeans and Sloppy Joes go for picnics but when it comes to school and occasions where she is out among folks; and wants to look her best it is important to be dressed in "girl's clothes."

Effects Of Weather, Sanitation And Chlorinated Chemical Residues On House And Stable Fly Populations On Nebraska Farms, Martin H. Muma, Ephriam Hixson Jan 1949

Effects Of Weather, Sanitation And Chlorinated Chemical Residues On House And Stable Fly Populations On Nebraska Farms, Martin H. Muma, Ephriam Hixson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Since L. O. Howard's (1906) early report on house flies many entomologists have conducted research on these insects. Their reports range from notes on the hibernation of house flies, Musca domestica L., to lengthy papers on the biology and control of house flies and stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.). Early control studies stressed the importance of sanitatioll, screening and the use of mist type contact insecticides. These standard control measures have not, however, received much attention in the United States since Wiesmann (1943) reported on the pro-longed effectiveness of a new insecticide "Gesarol." Scores of other workers have also published …

Mechanical Transmission Of A Plant Tumor Virus To An Insect Vector, Karl Maramorosch, Myron K. Brakke, L. M. Black Jan 1949

Mechanical Transmission Of A Plant Tumor Virus To An Insect Vector, Karl Maramorosch, Myron K. Brakke, L. M. Black

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Most plant viruses transmitted by leafhoppers have not been demonstrated to be infective in extracts. The virus dealt with in this paper causes tumors in certain susceptible plants, is carried by leafhoppers, and like others in that group has proven difficult to detect in extracts. It is our purpose to recount briefly the variety of methods that failed to transmit the virus and to report on the success of insect-to-insect transmission by injection.

Evidence For A Tryptophane Cycle In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel Mitchell Jan 1949

Evidence For A Tryptophane Cycle In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel Mitchell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The work of Snell on lactic acid bacteria provided the first evidence that anthranilic acid may act as a precursor to tryptophane in vivo. Since the strains of bacteria which utilize anthranilic acid in the place of tryptophane also use indole, it was not possible to establish the order in which these two precursors occurred. In 1943 Tatum, Bonner and Beadle found that anthranilic acid was accumulated in the culture medium by a Neurospora crassa mutant, strain 10575, which required either tryptophane or indole for growth. It was therefore indicated that anthranilic acid is a precursor to indole in …

A Metabolic Relationship Between The Aromatic Amino Acids, Joseph F. Nyc, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell Jan 1949

A Metabolic Relationship Between The Aromatic Amino Acids, Joseph F. Nyc, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The present work involves a further investigation of a Neurospora mutant, C-86, previously mentioned by Lein, Mitchell and Houlahan (1) as one that can utilize anthranilic acid, indole, tryptophan, kynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, and nicotinic acid as supplements for growth. Mutant C-86, when crossed to a “wild-type” strain, was found to differ from this wild type strain, with respect to tryptophan biosynthesis, by a mutation at a single locus. The evidence presented suggests the possibility of a common precursor to the aromatic amino acids.

The Occurrence Of Platynosomum Illiciens (Braun, 1901) In A North American Hawk., J. Fred Denton, Robert Rausch Jan 1949

The Occurrence Of Platynosomum Illiciens (Braun, 1901) In A North American Hawk., J. Fred Denton, Robert Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A series of 160 hawks of 12 species from ten states and the Province of Manitoba has been examined for dicrocoeliid trematodes. Only one species of dicrocoeliids was found in them indicating the infrequency with which North American hawks are infected with trematodes of this group.

Of the 160 hawks examined 4 were broad-winged hawks. Buteo platypterus, 2 of which, collected in Ohio and Wisconsin, harbored in their bile ducts 3 and 8 specimens respectively of a trematode of the genus Platynosomum. These specimens, after comparison with both the original and the recently expanded description by Travassos (1944, …

Some Observations On Cestodes Of The Genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, Parasitic In North American Voles (Microtus Spp.), Robert Rausch, Everett L. Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although cestodes of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, are common parasites of voles and certain other rodents in North America, their taxonomic status to the present time has been much confused. It is the purpose of this paper to clarify the situation in regard to those species parasitic in voles of the genus Microtus Schrank.

While certain of the cestodes considered here occur in hosts of other microtine genera, they are by far more abundant in the various species of Mi· crotus. At least two are also common in geomyid rodents. With the possible exception of Paranoplocephala brevis Kirschenblatt, …

Studies On The Parasitic Helminths Of The North Central States. Ii. Helminths Of Voles (Microtus Spp.) Preliminary Report, Robert L. Rausch, Jack Tiner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The helminths of North American mouse-like rodents have received little study. Previous work has been based on low numbers of animals examined, and there has been little reference to the ecology involved. The purpose of this paper is to present data resulting from the examination of over 600 voles, with special reference to host-parasite relationships

A Survey Of The Adult Trematodes From Fishes Of The Pacific Marine Station Area, William Franklin Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An effort is here made to assemble all of our knowledge of all adult trematodes which have been found in the fishes of the Pacific Marine Station Area. This includes publications, unpublished material such as graduate theses, and specimens herein described for the first time. It is hoped that this endeavor will facilitate further investigation in trematodology and that this paper will be an aid in identification of trematodes subsequently discovered.

Studies On Larval Trematodes From Tomales Bay, California, Leroy H. Fisk Jan 1949

Studies On Larval Trematodes From Tomales Bay, California, Leroy H. Fisk

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Very little is known of the development, life history, economic importance, of biological relationships of larval trematodes, especially in their molluscan and arthropod hosts on the Pacfic Coast. The comparatively few contributions to our knowledge have been from scattered and fragmentary observations. The purpose of this study was to expand our knowledge and to lay a foundation for further work on trematode life cycles in marine organisms. The area selected for special investigation was Nick's Cove, Tomales Bay, California.

Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr. Dec 1948

Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr.

UAES Bulletins

Salinity is a problem of irrigation agriculture and is recognized as a serious threat to crop production in the Western States. All water used for irrigation, whether diverted from surface stream or pumped from wells, contains dissolved salts in amounts varying from a few hundred pounds to several tons per acre-foot (8,23). Salts accumulating in the root zone of the soil, as water is removed by crop and by surface evaporation eventually, may restrict crop yields. Extensive areas of land in the Western States, which were at one time productive under irrigation, have been abandoned because of the development of …
