The Use Of X-Ray And Nitrogen Mustard To Determine The Mitotic And Intermitotic Times In Normal And Malignant Mammalian Tissues, William Richard Widner Jun 1952

The Use Of X-Ray And Nitrogen Mustard To Determine The Mitotic And Intermitotic Times In Normal And Malignant Mammalian Tissues, William Richard Widner

Biology ETDs

The relative times involved in the various phases of cell division is basic to problems of tissue growth, but the quantitative relation of mitotic and intermitotic times have received very little attention until recently. Even data on the quantitative comparison of mammalian growth rates are very limited. The rate of growth of any tissue is directly proportional to the number of new cells added to the tissue over and above the number of old cells being constantly destroyed.

The present study was undertaken: (1) to determine which of these two factors is responsible for differences in the mitotic index seen …

The European Corn Borer Situation In South Dakota Spring 1952, Gerald B. Spawn Jun 1952

The European Corn Borer Situation In South Dakota Spring 1952, Gerald B. Spawn

Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)

The European corn borer, which has now assumed the role of "perennial pest" in South Dakota, has been conspicuous by its inactivity during the past few months. However, it is still the major pest of corn in our state. Since last fall the larvae (worms) have been spending their time in the "deep freeze" sleep of their kind of hibernation, hidden away in the snow-blanketed stalks of last years corn fields. This is nature's way of taking care of them during the winter, and all too many of the larvae are now becoming active again.

Variety Every Day With Frozen Foods, Mildred Daniel Jun 1952

Variety Every Day With Frozen Foods, Mildred Daniel

SDSU Extension Circulars

The freezing method of preserving food for. future use has been used for many years. Modem frozen foods, if proper methods of handling, packaging and freezing have been used, will be of high nutritive value and show very little change in flavor, color, and texture from that of fresh food. Freezing has advantages over other methods of preservation because foods that are frozen quickly and stored at zero will be more like fresh foods than will foods that have been either canned or dried. Canning has been a very satisfactory method of preserving food, and because of this, freezing should …

Garden Insects And Their Control, John A. Lofgren Jun 1952

Garden Insects And Their Control, John A. Lofgren

SDSU Extension Circulars

Every garden is open to attack by insect pests at some time during the growing season. These attacks may cause severe damage if they go unnoticed and unchecked. It is important to learn to recognize these insects so that the proper control measures may be applied at the right time. Adequate fertility, clean culture, weed control, daily watchfulness and prompt treatment for insects and plant diseases, will do much to increase garden production.

One of the most important things in working with people—young people or adults—is willingness to accept a person as he is and attempt to understand him. Our job is to accept the adolescent as he is, with all his weaknesses, his carelessness, his uncertainties, his differences and his problems, and help him see the good qualities which he possesses.

The Influence Of Single, Two, And Three Stage Bleaching On Fading Characteristic Of Deinked Stock, Phillip H. Avery Jun 1952

The Influence Of Single, Two, And Three Stage Bleaching On Fading Characteristic Of Deinked Stock, Phillip H. Avery

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature survey on the various bleaching methods used on deinked stock and the factors which influence the fading characteristic of deinked stock is compiled. Mention is also made of various additives which have an influence on the fading of a sheet. A description of the experimental work with caustic deinked stack of various groundwood content follows. Results indicate that the groundwood content has more effect upon fading of deinked stock than the number of stages of bleaching, although the increase in the number of stages of bleaching does reduce the amount of fading in a sheet. A greater effect …

The Evaluation Of Paper By Means Of The Densichron Instrument, Edward G. Degalan Jun 1952

The Evaluation Of Paper By Means Of The Densichron Instrument, Edward G. Degalan

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

An Evaluation of the Universal Magnephot Densichron as a Reflectometer, Opacimeter and Color Analyzing Device

This paper is a report on the evaluation of the Universal Magnephot Densichron, an electronic photocell instrument developed for the photographic industry, for use in the paper industry. This instrument has been found to have several errors which make its use impractical for research work in the laboratory, but it can be used in paper mills for control purposes. If this used for this type of work certain precautions have to be taken as outlined. The major portion of this paper deals with the possibility …

A Proposed Method Of Forming A Sodium Hexametaphosphate Film On The Fourdrinier Wire, Theodore Richard Kielts Jun 1952

A Proposed Method Of Forming A Sodium Hexametaphosphate Film On The Fourdrinier Wire, Theodore Richard Kielts

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The addition of sodium hexametaphosphate to the white water system of the paper mill is an effective method of preventing pitch deposition. The ability of this compound to prevent pitch agglomeration is due to its tendency of forming monomolecular films on metallic surfaces to which pitch will not adhere.

This thesis has attempted to evaluate whether this monomolecular protective film is best formed by spraying a solution of sodium hexametaphosphate onto the moving Fourdrinier wire or whether it is best formed by the present-day method of allowing the film to form from the white water system to which sodium hexametaphosphate …

A Comparison Of The Strength Characteristics Of Sheets Produced By Standard T.A.P.P.I. Method And By Means Of The Noble And Wood Sheet Machine, William C. Geiger Jun 1952

A Comparison Of The Strength Characteristics Of Sheets Produced By Standard T.A.P.P.I. Method And By Means Of The Noble And Wood Sheet Machine, William C. Geiger

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The first section of this paper is devoted to a literature survey in which the following sheetmaking variables, and their effects upon strength were examined: drying, tension, couching, pressing, consistency of stock in headbox, effect of differences in wire mesh, and drainage time.

The second section is composed of results obtained by personal experimental work. In order to provide an accurate comparison of the two sheetmaking machines in question, their relative differences in procedure were interchanged so as to bring out the variations in strength values for force drying versus air drying, tension during drying versus drying without tension, and …

Bulletin No. 353 - Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Yield And Protein Content Of Winter Wheat In Utah, Howard B. Peterson Jun 1952

Bulletin No. 353 - Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Yield And Protein Content Of Winter Wheat In Utah, Howard B. Peterson

UAES Bulletins

Winter what is one of the major crops of Utah. For more than 50 years winter wheat has been grown on the dry lands of the state. It is about the only crop grown on these lands under the usual alternate cropping and fallow system. Since 1941 acreage in the state has increased about 60 percent. Little or no manure is applied and only occasionally is a legume green manure turned under. It is apparent that with the original low supply of nitrogen in most of the soils of the state, together with the depleting effects of the common cropping …

Bulletin No. 354 - Marketing Of Chickens From Producer To First Handler Washington, Oregon, And Utah (1948-1949), Roice H. Anderson Jun 1952

Bulletin No. 354 - Marketing Of Chickens From Producer To First Handler Washington, Oregon, And Utah (1948-1949), Roice H. Anderson

UAES Bulletins

In 1949 the receipts from eggs and chickens amounted to 8.6, 6.0, and 13.2 percent of the total cash receipts from farm marketings in Washington, Oregon, and Utah, respectively. About three fourths of these receipts were from sale of eggs and one fourth from the sale of chickens. Receipts from chicken sales, while less important than from eggs, amounted to about 21.5 million dollars in 1949 in the three states. As would be expected, considering the importance of egg production in the three states, many of the chickens sold are cull layers and other chickens produced incidental to the egg …

The Muscles Of The Forearm Of Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr. Jun 1952

The Muscles Of The Forearm Of Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Little of a completely satisfactory character has been published on the arm-myology of Necturus. Mivart (1869) dissected a single specimen, and described certain of the foreleg muscles. Ribbing (1906-07) dissected two specimens, and included some notes on the foreleg of Necturus, but most of his paper deals with Siredon and other forms. Wilder (1908, 1912) presented a good account of the muscles of the foreleg, and his descriptions will here be referred to many times. Howell (1936) and Straus (1942) discussed the anatomy of the flexor muscles of the forearm of Necturus; but they were interested in the broader problems …

Papers Presented At The 1952 Meeting Of The Society Of Student Geologists, George Waverly Hall Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Early this year, graduate students in the Geology Department of Southern Methodist University, aware that there was no adequate student group which could advocate and instigate a desired type of extracurricular geologic program, set about to put such a program in motion. They formed a club to be known as The Society of Student Geologists. They sought to begin a positive program of geologic activity, and to form a true honorary organization to recognize outstanding undergraduates in geology.

The Taxonomy Of Utah Orthoptera With Notes On Distribution, Andrew H. Barnum Jun 1952

The Taxonomy Of Utah Orthoptera With Notes On Distribution, Andrew H. Barnum

Theses and Dissertations

To an entomologist, the Orthoptera1 is in a state of confusion with respect to the available literature. Work has been done, and is now being done on the orthopteran fauna, but manuals tor identification of most species are not available for all sections or the country. Exclusive of a few lim-ited groups, Utah is among the areas that has no complete keys for taxonomic workers. In biological ivenstigations identification is essential: The species being studied must be definitely known. The primary purpose of this study, therefore, is to list the Utah Orthoptera and provide the keys necessary to their critical …

Respiration Of Kidney Slices From Adrenalectomized Rats Treated With Adrenal Cortical Hormones, Miriam Landew May 1952

Respiration Of Kidney Slices From Adrenalectomized Rats Treated With Adrenal Cortical Hormones, Miriam Landew

Biology ETDs

In view of the fact that there obviously are metabolic and oxidative disturbances in the kidney caused by adrenalectomy, this investigation was attempted in an effort to obtain information concerning the following:

(1) Whether the rate of oxygen consumption of rat kidney tissue slices is a function of time; to determine whether the decreased metabolic function occurred immediately upon adrenalectomy or if an initial rise and then a falling off took place, as seemed to be indicated in the work done by Butcher (1943).

(2) Whether cortisone or desoxycorticosterone had the ability to alter oxygen consumption of kidney tissue in …

The Effects Of Epinephrine And Nor-Epinephrine On The Blood Picture In The Rat, George H. Gass May 1952

The Effects Of Epinephrine And Nor-Epinephrine On The Blood Picture In The Rat, George H. Gass

Biology ETDs

It has long been known that various stresses and stimuli elicit responses in the animal body, and since the stating of Cannon's "emergency function" (1929), the adrenal medullary hormones have been credited with exciting many of the instantaneous responses to the animal body.

The experiment was designed to determine: (1) whether nor-epinephrine has effects on the blood elements different from those seen after epinephrine treatment; (2) whether the dosage of hormone employed will affect the type of response obtained; and (3) whether the demedullated rat responds to the adrenal medullary hormones in the same pattern as the intact rat.
