Farm Labor, Power And Machinery Performance For Selected Operations Under Dryland And Irrigated Conditions In Central South Dakota, James Ulvilden

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The problems of farm managers are everlasting. They are constantly in the process of examining alternative methods of production and alter native combinations of resources in an attempt to attain a higher and more stable income. For this farm planning, a vast amount of physical data on the cost and returns of alternative plans is needed. It is important that the physical data be as accurate as possible, because the farm plan is no better than the information upon which it is based. Technological progress has been very rapid in agriculture and thus it is important to keep up with …

Bulletin No. 362 - Sugar Beet Yield And Quality As Affected By Plan Population, Soil Moisture Condition, And Fertilization, Jay L. Haddock

UAES Bulletins

In 1605 Oliver de Serres, French agronomist, observed that beets contained sugar-and in 1750 Andrew Marggraf, a German physicist, obtained sugar crystals from beets. It was more than 100 years from Marggraf's discovery until the first successful beet sugar factory was developed in the United States at Alvarado, California, in 1870. Since that time beet sugar has become increasingly more important in our national economy. At present continental United States produces a third of her sugar requirements, 70 to 80 percent of which is from sugar beets. The importance of the sugar beet crop in national and world economy is …

In addition to this many of the main skeletal parts of Bolitoglossa platydactyla (Cuvier) Bolitoglossa occidentalis Taylor, and Bolitoglossa flaviventris (Schmidt) are described and figured. A comparison of the following parts of the above mentioned salamanders is presented: skull, atlas, ninth trunk vertebra, sixth caudal vertebra, carpals, tarsals and digits. Some Preliminary Studies Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Vectors In Utah, Marvin Dale Coffey

Theses and Dissertations

That the tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was the vehicle of transmission for the disease Rocky Mountain spotted fever was first suggested by Wilson and Chowning (1902). The disease itself has been recognized since 1873, being first known from the Bitter Root Valley of Montana. The first medical record, however, was reported from Idaho by Wood (1896).

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson Jul 1953

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The desire for secure tenure in ownership of land has given rise to the associated ideal of the family farm. Implementation of this ideal has been one aspect of political and governmental agricultural policy through out our national life. Although federal agricultural policies and legislation have not always been consistently directed' toward this end, Congress has frequently extended federal assistance in one form or another in support of this ideal. Federal assistance for this purpose has most often come during periods of agricultural distress when demands upon Congress for such assistance have been great. Currently, the Farmers Home Administration's Farm …

On The Status Of Some Arctic Mammals, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1953

On The Status Of Some Arctic Mammals, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The mammal fauna of arctic Alaska is comprised of about thirty species, most of which are widely distributed. A few of these are essentially nearctic species, having extended their range northwestward during post-Pleistocene time. The majority, however, consists of forms which are either circumboreal in their distribution, or which have closely-related palearctic counterparts-considered specifically distinct hy most North American mammalogists. Sorne of the foremost Old World workers, however, do not agree that Bering Strait constitutes a barrier which effectively separates the Old World fauna from the New.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xiii. Disease In The Sea Otter, With Special Reference To Helminth Parasites, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During the spring of 1951, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. The decision to undertake this activity was influenced by the nature of military operations planned for the island later the same year. The capture and removal of the otter were under the supervision of Mr. Robert D. Jones, Biologist, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths …

Some Local Impacts Of Reservoirs In South Dakota, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Jun 1953

Some Local Impacts Of Reservoirs In South Dakota, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The South Dakota Coordinating Committee for Missouri Basin Development appointed a sub-committee to study some of the local impacts of inundation of land in reservoir areas. The purpose of the study was first to get a clear understanding of the local problems arising from the inundation of large areas of land, and secondly, to consider suggestions for improving the rules and procedures used in land acquisition programs. The building of certain dams in the Missouri Basin was given general approval in the Flood Control Act of 1944. Further approval has been given through subsequent appropriations. The sub-committee was not asked to …

Abnormal Digits In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr. Jun 1953

Abnormal Digits In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Necturus normally has four digits on each limb, but several variations of this basic pattern have been recorded. Necturus with three toes on one or more feet have been reported by Jenness (1942, 1944), Hutt (1945) and Mattox (1944). Individuals with five toes were reported by Jenness (1942, 1946); one with eight toes was reported by Mattox. Digits may have one phalanx less than is usual (Mattox) or one phalanx more than is usual (Harris, 1952). Mattox had one specimen in which digit 4 was missing on one leg, and another in which an extra phalanx grew from the side …

Geology Of The Preston Hollow Quadrangle (Dallas, Collin, And Denton Counties, Texas), George. W. B. Hall Jr. Jun 1953

Geology Of The Preston Hollow Quadrangle (Dallas, Collin, And Denton Counties, Texas), George. W. B. Hall Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Bedrock in the Preston Hollow Quadrangle consists of the upper Eagle Ford shale and the middle marl and lower chalk members of the Austin formation. The area is situated upon a gentle homocline with the beds dipping 50 to 60 feet per mile to the southeast. The Eagle Ford is principally shale with interbedded thin layers of shaly limestone and sandy shale. The Austin formation is readily divisible into a lower chalk, which is a rather hard unit, and an overlying softer marly unit. There are, however, many hard chalky beds in the marl. Many thin layers of an argillaceous …

Geology Of The Pleasant Grove Area, Dallas County, Texas, Dale O. Overmyer Jun 1953

Geology Of The Pleasant Grove Area, Dallas County, Texas, Dale O. Overmyer

Field and Laboratory

The Austin chalk and Taylor marl of Upper Cretaceous age underlie the Pleasant Grove area. These units strike north-northeast and dip at approximately 55 feet per mile toward the east. Both the middle marly and the upper chalk members of the Austin are present. Within the upper 40 feet of the chalk there are several local unconformities. In cross section these appear as buried depressions as much as 9 feet in original depth, with their bottoms truncating beds of massive chalk. The basal beds filling these depressions contain much conglomeratic material abounding in fossil fragments. These structures vary in age …
