A Photographic Study Of The Effects Of Beating On Fiber Structure, Gene D. Anderson Jun 1956

A Photographic Study Of The Effects Of Beating On Fiber Structure, Gene D. Anderson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Because beating is the most fundamental, but highly important, process in the paper industry, some of the changes in fiber structure that occur during beating have been investigated. A literature survey is also presented concerning a number of related investigations of fiber structure.

The experimental results indicate that fibrillation begins very shortly after the beating process is started. As beating progresses, the primary cell wall is removed, and the specific area of the fiber increases greatly when the watery medium encounters the secondary lamella area of the fiber. Continued beating shows that the action is a mechanical one, in that …

Andropogon Ischaemum L. Var. Songaricus Ruprecht: Technical Name For King Ranch Bluestem, Lloyd H. Shinners Jun 1956

Andropogon Ischaemum L. Var. Songaricus Ruprecht: Technical Name For King Ranch Bluestem, Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

In a previous paper (1954) I reported Andropogon Ischaemum as found wild in two Texas counties (Collin, Grayson), persisting after cultivation in one (Denton), and planted along open highway in another (Rockwall). Additional wild collections can now be reported from Brazoria, Brown, Dallas, Fannin, Kleberg, Live Oak, Mills, and Sutton counties. All are of plants with bearded nodes, and all the Texas records are therefore to be referred to Andropogon Ischaemum var. songaricus rather than to var. Ischaemum.

The Texas Species Of Limonium (Plumbaginaceae), Lloyd H. Shinners Jun 1956

The Texas Species Of Limonium (Plumbaginaceae), Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

Only two sea-lavenders occur in Texas, so that no great taxonomic problem exists so far as this area is concerned. One of the two, however, is a member of a difficult complex. It has passed under a number of different names, and has not been accurately described nor delimited in any publica-tions treating the genus. The following synopsis is based on 18 specimens (representing 17 collections) from Texas and 6 from Atlantic Coast states in the S.M.U. Herbarium, sup-plemented by descriptions of the eastern plants published by Blake, Fernald, Gray, and Small.

Notes On Mammals Of Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup Jun 1956

Notes On Mammals Of Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup

Field and Laboratory

Little is known of the distribution of mammals in north-central Texas. Russell's study of the mammals of Cooke County (1953) is, I believe, the only work of this sort which has been carried out in this area. During the last two years (summer of 1954 through the summer of 1956) my students and I have made regular collections of mammals from various stations in Dallas County, in an attempt to ascertain the species occurring and their relative abundance. This paper summarizes our results. It should not be considered a complete list for the county; doubtless species are present which we …

The Comparative Morphology Of The Central Nervous System Of The Larva, Pupa, And Adult Of Epilachnia Corrupta, Raymond F. Moore Jun 1956

The Comparative Morphology Of The Central Nervous System Of The Larva, Pupa, And Adult Of Epilachnia Corrupta, Raymond F. Moore

Master's Theses

The nervous system of insects has been subject of much study and research. By far the greatest part of this work has been on the orders of Orthopters, Lepidopters, Hymenopters, Diptera, and Coleoptera. This has been limited, in most cases, to a particular stage in the life history of the insect. This paper looks to study the morphology of the central nervous system of Epilachnia corrupta through all its stages in its life cycle.

Birds Of The Brigham Young University Campus, Barid Baran Mukherjee Jun 1956

Birds Of The Brigham Young University Campus, Barid Baran Mukherjee

Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with the seasonal distribution, relative abundance, and location of the different species of birds which visit or live on the Brigham Young University campus from late summer to early spring, with a brief account of their activities. The upper campus, where this investigation was carried on, covers an area of 201 acres and is situated on a bench at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The study was continued from July 13, 1955 to April 15, 1956. A total of 173 hours was devoted to census work and to studying the general ecology of the area. Four …

Photo-Oxidations Sensitized By Physiologically Important Substances, Ernel D. Ihnen Jun 1956

Photo-Oxidations Sensitized By Physiologically Important Substances, Ernel D. Ihnen

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the photo-oxidation of the 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol-ascorbic couple was undertaken with a view to investigating the postulated mechanism of oxidation by a component of the oxygen evolving sequence operative in photosynthesis. A spectrophotometric method for the measurement of the progress of photo-oxidation was developed. Temperature and pH dependence were determined and the effect of various common inhibitors and physiological substances tested. None of the common Hill reaction inhibitors were effective in the ascorbic acid photo-oxidation in the system used. KCN and catalase as well as a few other high molecular weight proteins were able to inhibit dark auto-oxidation …

The Coexistence Of Pathogens And Pseudomonads In Soluble Oil Emulsions, R. Samuel-Maharajah, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, Sheila Templeton Jun 1956

The Coexistence Of Pathogens And Pseudomonads In Soluble Oil Emulsions, R. Samuel-Maharajah, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, Sheila Templeton

Papers in Microbiology

This investigation is concerned primarily with the growth and virulence of pathogenic bacteria introduced into soluble oil emulsions. The soluble oils are petroleum or fatty oils emulsified with soaps of petroleum sulfonic acids, naphthenic acids, fatty acids, rosin, or tall oil. When mixed with water, the soluble oils form stable oil-in-water emulsions and, as such, are used in machine shops as coolants and lubricants in the cutting and grinding of metals. Unfortunately, they serve as excellent substrates for the growth of bacteria.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxvii. The Occurrence Of Larvae Of Trichinella Spiralis In Alaskan Mammals, Robert L. Rausch, B. B. Babero, Virginia R. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller Jun 1956

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxvii. The Occurrence Of Larvae Of Trichinella Spiralis In Alaskan Mammals, Robert L. Rausch, B. B. Babero, Virginia R. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In 1948 much interest in trichinosis in arctic regions was aroused, particularly by the findings of Thorborg et al. (1948), who investigated serious outbreaks occurring among the Eskimo of West Greenland during 1947. Consequently, with the founding of the Arctic Health Research Center in the autumn of 1948, a study of trichinosis in Alaska was the first project to be initiated by the Zoonotic Disease Section (formerly Animal-borne Disease Section) of this Center.

Field work was begun in January, 1949, and a preliminary note on trichinosis in Alaskan mammals was published by Brandly and Rausch (1950). The subject of trichinosis …
