Migratory Bird Regulations 1959-60 Jan 1959

Migratory Bird Regulations 1959-60

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Migratory birds, which move across State and National borders, are recognized as an international resource requiring conservation on a continental basis. Protection of migratory birds on the North American Continent is provided for by conventions between the United States and Great Britain (for Canada), concluded August 16, 1916 (39 Stat. 1702), and between the United States and the United Mexican States, concluded February 7, 1936 (50 Stat. 1311). Protection in the United States is provided by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of July 3,1918, as amended (40 Stat. 755; 16 U. S. C. 703). Birds protected by the Migratory Bird …

Bleak Reports Coming From Waterfowl Breeding Grounds, Ross Leffler Jan 1959

Bleak Reports Coming From Waterfowl Breeding Grounds, Ross Leffler

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

There is no optimism expressed in the reports from the Flyway Biologists and other observers making surveys on the waterfowl breeding grounds in Canada and the United States. The only bright spot is a report from Fairbanks, Alaska, that the Yukon Flats and other breeding areas in that vicinity are well populated with waterfowl. While this is a heartening sign, only in a small degree does it offset the prospects for poor production in the heart of the continental breeding grounds in the Prairie States and Provinces.

As one observer with many years of experience in the prairies has put …

Some Aspects Of Printing Quality, Robert B. Badger Jr. Jan 1959

Some Aspects Of Printing Quality, Robert B. Badger Jr.

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The object of this experiment was to find the effect of various pressures upon the ink coverage and the visual appearance of the half-tone print. A specially designed plate with four evenly spaced elevations was used with a Vandercook proof press. Various grades of paper were used. Results showed: a variation in the range of ink coverage due to the grade of paper and the number of lines of the half-tone; within the area of good printing a small change in pressure caused a large change in ink coverage; the change in ink coverage varied from elevation to elevation; an …

Water Systems For The Farm, William Peterson Jan 1959

Water Systems For The Farm, William Peterson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Water under pressure is necessary on the modern farm. Probably more tons of water are needed than any other single product handled on the farm. Handling it automatically, with a pressure system, will save much work and time. Without water under pressure, animals often do not get enough water and production efficiency suffers. The home will be more sanitary if plenty of water, under pressure, is available.

SDSU Extension Circulars

Sparkling good health is the greatest gift you can give your family. Your children are homemaking trainees and can learn from you. Hundreds of scientific studies show that there is no substitute for good food in the right amounts for building a healthy body. As a result of such research: We know the minimum daily requirements for food values. Better, we have Recommended Daily Allowances that provide a safe margin or individual differences. The foods we need each day are divided into Basic 7 or Basic 4 groups that furnish similar body needs. We know what food values each of …

Brush Finishing Of Coated Paperboard, Arlon F. King Jan 1959

Brush Finishing Of Coated Paperboard, Arlon F. King

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

It would seem apparent that a brief explanation of the term "brush finishing of paper" is in order before dealing extensively with our literature survey. Although brush finishing is not a new term, it has never been dealt with in its true sense as a means of finishing paper in the paper industry.

Brush-enamel papers were developed and used extensively in the second half of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century. The new development came from Germany and as the art of paper coating had been developed there to a high degree, the brush-polishing process …

Men Of Science In Texas, 1820-1880: Ii, S. W. Geiser Jan 1959

Men Of Science In Texas, 1820-1880: Ii, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

In the last issue of Field & Laboratory (26, 86-139) appeared the first 331 sketches (Abadie to Gilbert) of collectors, explorers, and observers, in a series that will extend through several issues. My fears of omissions were justified: I find that a sketch of Samuel Botsford Buckley (1809-84), a graduate of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and twice State Geologist of Texas (1866-7 and 1874-5) was unaccountably omitted. This omission is the more notable since for twenty years I have been holding in abeyance the publication of a sketch of Buckley (on whom I have very extensive materials) waiting for a …

An Iron Fulgurite From Nebraska, C. M. Riley Jan 1959

An Iron Fulgurite From Nebraska, C. M. Riley

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

From the time of the ancients man has been impressed with the force of lightning and its effect on the rocks at the surface of the earth. It was Saussure in 1786 who first wrote a scientific account of a true fulgurite, and a wealth of literature has been written about the subject since this time. Many unusual fulgurites have been described, some of which may not truly be the result of lightning. The iron fulgurite is a strange conical object about 3 inches high composed mainly of tiny spheres and filaments of metallic iron intermixed with a small amount …

Rb59-187 The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney Jan 1959

Rb59-187 The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Many of our farm homes do not satisfactorily meet the needs of the family and its living patterns. Thirty to 50 years ago little thought was given to certain aspects of housing which are considered essential today. It is obvious, to even the casual observer, that improvements should be made in living space, work areas, utilities and appliances.

The 1959 survey of the two story square house parallels the multi-story tee house study (RB58-186 The Existing Space in Nebraska Multistory Tee Houses) as to area covered and type of data collected. One hundred and seven houses were included …

A Study Of The Manufacture Of Cultured Butter And Retail Store Sales In Brookings, South Dakota, Shirley W. Seas Jan 1959

A Study Of The Manufacture Of Cultured Butter And Retail Store Sales In Brookings, South Dakota, Shirley W. Seas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Butter consumption in the united stated had dropped to 8.4 pounds per capita in 1953 from approximately 17 pounds prior to World War II. There has been only a very slight increase during the last five years. Dairy industry leaders and research workers have south to find the reason for this situation and possible remedies for it. A recent consumer preference study conducted by Rollag and Krist Janson (21) in Brookings and Sioux Falls, South Dakota indicated a fairly strong preference for high quality butter with a considerable amount of flavor obtained by adding butter culture to the butter. The …

The Effects Of Anticholinergic Drugs On Sea Anemones, Kenneth Robert Shortridge Jan 1959

The Effects Of Anticholinergic Drugs On Sea Anemones, Kenneth Robert Shortridge

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The first proof of the chemical mediation of nerve impulses by the peripheral release of specific chemicals was made by Loewi (1921). He demonstrated that during stimulation of the vagus nerve leading to an excised frog’s heart (Figure 1) a chemical mediator that he called Vagus-substance was released which slowed the action of the heart. This chemical mediator entered a perfusion fluid consisting of isotonic sodium chloride which was pumped out of the ventricle of the heart and diverted so as to drip onto a second frog's heart. The dripping perfusion medium slowed the pulsation of the second heart upon …

Regenerating Aspen By Suckering In The Southwest, Merylyn M. Larson

Aspen Bibliography

Although seeding is necessary for the spread of aspen into new localities, suckering (sprouting from adventitious buds on the roots) is the chief means of reproduction in established stands. Suckering can usually be induced by reducing or eliminating the aspen overstory. 2
