Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss Jan 1956

Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss

Papers in Ornithology

Sex-ratio studies have received much attention from research workers in recent years. The contributions of Hochbaum (1944), Petrides (1944) and others have yielded considerable information on sex ratios in waterfowl; Beer (1945) and Yocom (1949) have presented data for the state of Washington. To interpret regional data on waterfowl sex ratios adequately, it is necessary to obtain a series of uninterrupted observations covering the entire migration period of the species concerned. In 1954, an ecologic study was conducted in the Potholes area, Grant County, central Washington (Johnsgard, 1956). During the period February 15 to May 16, sex-ratio data were collected …

Cc56-136 Poultry Profit Pointers: Health Maintenance, Elvin C. Schulte

Cc56-132 Poultry Profit Pointers: Range Management, Elvin C. Schulte

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This campaign circular discusses range management. The number of birds that can be ranged on an acre will depend upon the type of sod and the fertility of the land. On most land, 250 to 500 pullets can be ranged per acre.

Pullets should be reared on range after geing started in permanent or colony brooder houses. They should be hardened off by letting them run on wire sun porches or gravel yards in front of the brooding houses and then transferred to the shelters on the range.

Cc56-126 Poultry Profit Pointers: Feeding For Egg Production, Elvin C. Schulte

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Eggs are produced from the feed we give our hens. The number of eggs taht are produced depends upon the amount and quality of the ration. For a hen to lay profitabily she must have a full feed of a properly balanced ration.

This campaign circular discusses what is needed to get the best egg production from your hens.

Flight Activities Of The Ant Dolichoderus (Hypoclinea) Mariae Forel, Mary Talbot

Faculty Scholarship

Often some reference is made to the "flight" of a .species of ants as if all the males and females left the colony .on one day. W. M. Wheeler, in his 1905 account of the genus Dolichoderus, said .o D. mariae" "August 20 is approximately the date of the nuptial flight oi this species." Today it is generally understood that there are usually a number oi flights. This study shows that D. mariae is conspicuous in this respect.

The Comparative Osteology Of The Trunk Skeleton Of Five Year Classes Of The Golden Shiner, Notemigonus Crysoleucas (Mitchell), Aaron Hathaway O'Bier

Master's Theses

The golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucaa, forms a monotypic species in the fish family, Cyprinidae. It is a medium-sized minnow which inhabits ponds and sluggish freshwater streams in North America from latitude; 30°N. to 50°N. Summary Report Of The 1956 Midwinter Waterfowl Survey In The Central Flyway, C. S. Williams

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This report summarizes the information obtained by the 1956 midwinter waterfowl survey on the size and distribution of waterfowl populations wintering in the Central Flyway States and Eastern Mexico. The information has been compiled solely for the use of administrators and waterfowl research men who are engaged in the management of the waterfowl resource.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the ten States of the Central Flyway Council, and the Forestry and Wildlife Department of Mexico cooperated in conducting the survey which began on January 9, and for the most was completed within several days thereafter. Thus, with the …

Cytogenetic Studies In The Genus Cymbidium, Donald E. Wimber Jan 1956

Cytogenetic Studies In The Genus Cymbidium, Donald E. Wimber

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The orchids known today make up one of the largest Angiospermous families in the world. Recent estimates place the number of genera at about 450 which estimates between 10,000 and 15,000 species (some authorities go as high as 20,000). They are without doubt one of the most highly specialized groups of green plants. Botanically the flowers are of more than passing interest for they deviate so distinctly from the norm of the Monocots. They are the possessors of a number of unique structures that are found in no other family of flowering plants.

Grasslands Of The Great Plains: Their Nature And Use, J. E. Weaver, F. W. Albertson, B. W. Allred, Arnold Heerwagen

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

This book is the result of a long-felt need by the authors and their students for a comprehensive survey of the numerous studies that have been made on plains grasslands. From southern Texas far into Saskatchewan the mid and short grasses form a magnificent prairie nearly 2,500 miles in length and approximately 400 miles wide. Kinds of communities, their composition, nature, significance and uses are fully described. Such information is of value not only to students, range technicians, and other professional conservationists, but also to ranchers and other land owners-in fact, to anyone interested in the economy of our midwestern …

Effects Of Irradiation, Maleic Hydrazide, Temperature, And Age On Enzyme Activity In Seedlings Of Corn (Zea Mays L.), Francis A. Haskins, Harold Chapman Jan 1956

Effects Of Irradiation, Maleic Hydrazide, Temperature, And Age On Enzyme Activity In Seedlings Of Corn (Zea Mays L.), Francis A. Haskins, Harold Chapman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The work of Schmidt and Frolik (1951) and of Beard (1955) has shown that plants of corn (Zea mays L.) grown from seeds treated with appropriate doses of X-rays or thermal neutrons are greatly reduced in stature and survival in comparison with control plants, and that pronounced increases in chromosomal abnormalities and pollen sterility also result from seed irradiation. It is reasonable to suspect that these morphological and cytological effects might be associated with changes in the metabolism of the plant. Accordingly, a series of experiments has been conducted in which preparations of normal corn seedlings and preparations of …
