Since growers are generally unable to produce food the year-round, preservation of available food by the growers and processors has continued to challenge the minds of these men and their scientific cohorts. Even the consumer is subject to this problem and mist rely on those from. whoa he receives food as to its present and eventual condition. Many methods of preservation have been used such as pickling, drying, smoking, canning, and freezing. Most of these preservation methods require excessive handling and/or extensive storage facilities.

Beans are an important source of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins for millions of vegetarians in the world, especially in Asia. The quality and harvesting time of beans depend upon the purpose for which the beans are used. For example, for canning and freezing the beans should be harvested when they are neither starchy nor watery but should be sugary. The processing industry in Asia is not highly developed. Hence, the food is usually preserved by sun drying. Sun dried beans are often consumed the year around.

Pod setting is a problem in lima beans and in various other crops. …

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The story of the development of food preservation is as old as the story of man. Cavemen and nomadic tribesmen have little heed to food preservation. They threw away the food left when their hunger was satisfied and searched for more when famished . However, from the time men began to settle down and have permanent homes, the need for some means of retarding food spoilage has been evident.

An Evaluation Of The Salt Tolerance Of Selected Clones Of Agropyron Elongatum, Jordan G. Smith

Salt-affected soils make up much of the bottom-lands of the arid and semiarid areas of the western United States and are especially prevalent in irrigated regions. Such soils require special remedial measures, management practices, and salt tolerant crops if they are to have economic value.

In the past few years the Utah Fish and Game Department, as well as the fish and game departments of other states, has been spending fisheries money for fish eradication on both lakes and streams. The Utah Fish and Game Department recently suggested to the University that research be initiated on the subject of toxaphene as a fish poison. Foraminiferal Populations Of The Goodland Formation, Tarrant County, Texas, Leslie R. Beddoes Jr. Apr 1959

Foraminiferal Populations Of The Goodland Formation, Tarrant County, Texas, Leslie R. Beddoes Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Recent studies of foraminiferal populations of the Gulf of Mexico made by Phleger (1951 and 1954), Parker, et al. (1953) , Lowman (1949), and Shepard and Moore (1955) show that different kinds of Foraminifera inhabit waters of different depth, salinity and temperature. These studies should provide evidence from which micropaleontologists may infer the nature of ancient environments, assuming always that fossil Foraminifera had the same habits as their nearest of kin in the modern assemblages. Albritton, et al. (1954) and Curtis (1955) have made quantitative studies of ancient populations, and have found that the Foraminifera tend to corroborate and supplement …

Federal and state watershed acts are intended to help you and your neighbors manage your watershed, to conserve soil, and make better use of the rain where is falls. The Federal Law provides for technical and financial assistance whereas the State Act provides for necessary administration and management. The State Act provides for a taxing …

The First Noted Occurence Of Dasypus Bellus In Texas, Bob H. Slaughter

Field and Laboratory

A small group of persons, "The Dallas Prehistorical Society", has for several years been collecting fossil bones from the sec-ond of a series of alluvial terraces of the Trinity River. We have assembled a rather extensive fauna. Our fauna! list has not been published in full, although some specimens have been reported as new species. As some time will elapse before the fauna! paper will be ready for publication, it seems well to report here the first Texas record of Dasypus bellus (Simpson).

Summary Of Research On Diethlstilbestrol For Growing And Fattening Beef Cattle, D.V. Radabaugh, L.B. Embry Apr 1959

Summary Of Research On Diethlstilbestrol For Growing And Fattening Beef Cattle, D.V. Radabaugh, L.B. Embry

Agricultural Experiment Station Animal Husbandry Pamphlets

Numerous experiments on the response of growing and fattening cattle to stilbestrol have been reported in recent years. There has been a response to stilbestrol in most of these experiments, though to varying degrees. Many of the reports have been of a preliminary nature and in several instances have covered only one trial. A review of such experiments individually does not present a clear and concise picture of the effects of stilbestrol treatment. Therefore, results of most of the reported experiments have been reviewed and are summarized in the tables in this pamphlet. Four rather distinct phases of cattle feeding …
