Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum
Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The purpose of this paper is to make understandable the use of statistics in the field of medicine, and to introduce to the clinician some new methods of statistics for drawing some reasonable conclusions based on the meager data usually available. There is, after all, only one valid use of statistics: to enable oneself to make a personal decision based on the information available.

A Test Of The Simple Recessive Hypothesis For The Inability To Taste Phenyl-Thio-Urea: A Family Study, Susan I. Wolf
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is a report on the analysis of family data gathered to test the simple recessive hypothesis for the inability to taste phenyl-thio-urea (P.T.C.). The simple recessive hypothesis states that the inability of a minority of persons to taste high concentrations of P.T.C. is due to the action of an autosomal recessive gene in the homozygous condition.

Tool-Making And Tool-Using In The Northern Blue Jay, Thony B. Jones, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Laboratory-raised Northern blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) have been observed tearing pieces from pages of newspaper and utilizing them as tools to rake in food pellets which were otherwise out of reach. The frequency of this behavior was dependent upon the motivational state of the jay and the presence of food pellets.
Mechanisms Of Population Regulation In Confined Colonies Of Peromyscus Maniculatus (Wagner) And The Response To Exploitation, Donna Corn Olsen
Mechanisms Of Population Regulation In Confined Colonies Of Peromyscus Maniculatus (Wagner) And The Response To Exploitation, Donna Corn Olsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wild-trapped and laboratory-reared Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner) were raised as confined colonies indoors with various stocking densities ranging from 0.026 to 0.100 mice per sq. ft. in pens of 40, 77, and 154 sq. ft. The animals were individually tagged and all pens were censused at weekly or semi-monthly intervals to record animals present, body weights, food consumption, and overt reproductive condition. At the termination of each experiment, all mice were necropsied and organ weights of gonads and adrenals recorded. Histological sections were made of the testes and ovaries. Half the colonies were subjected to density-independent exploitation by removal of 50% …
Predicting Primary Productivity In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia., Gary Newton Moore
Predicting Primary Productivity In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia., Gary Newton Moore
Master's Theses
Several predictive photosynthetic models were tested using light, temperature, nutrient, chlorophyll, and primary productivity data collected from Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia from February-September, 1972. A simple linear model, the Kendall rank correlation coefficient, was used to relate photosynthesis to individual meteorological, physical, chemical, and biological factors. iii Of the parameters measured, only the daily maximum photosynthetic efficiency ((P/chl) max ) was significantly correlated with photosynthesis. Five multiple factor (non-linear) models were tested. In the best fitting model, primary productivity was a function of the maximum observed ratio of photosynthesis/chlorophyll concentration, light intensity, temperature, nutrient concentrations, and chlorophyll concentration. The Pearson …
Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Growth And Composition Of The Sporophyte And Gametophyte Generations Of Allomyces Arbusculus Butler (1911), Lawrence Wayne Lenz
Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Growth And Composition Of The Sporophyte And Gametophyte Generations Of Allomyces Arbusculus Butler (1911), Lawrence Wayne Lenz
Master's Theses
Pure cultures of the sporophyte and gametophyte generations of Allomyces arbusculus Butler (1911) were grown under varied conditions of temperature and pH. On solid media the gametophyte did not grow at 10 and 15 C; the sporophyte began slow growth after a long lag period at 15 C. There were no significant differences in growth between the sporophyte and gametophyte at 20 and 25 C. Increasing colony areas occurred for both generations at temperatures between 30 and 40 C, with the largest amount of growth for either generation at 35 C.
Colonies grown in broth media at various pH levels …

An Approach To Range Inventory For The Annual Range Type Of The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander
An Approach To Range Inventory For The Annual Range Type Of The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Range inventory, by definition, is the evaluation of the range resources to determine a proper and safe level of stocking and to provide a record of vegetation and vegetation changes (Stoddart and Smith, 1955). Range survey is defined by the Range Conservation Glossary, Soil Conservation Service (1944) as "a systematic and comprehensive inventory and analysis of the range resources and related management problems of a range area for the purpose of developing plans of management therefrom." Accordingly, range inventory is the quest for basic information about rangelands and the development of guides and procedures for their management, improvement and efficient …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An experiment was designed to study the effects of forage availability, season and intensity of grazing, and distribution and behavior of sheep on their forage preferences. Three grazing periods of 15 days each were used to study the effect of season. Each grazing period included a heavy and a moderate stocking intensity. Pastures were divided by a grid into 30.48 m x 30.48 m compartments. Each compartment was sampled for botanical composition of available herbage prior to and after grazing. Esophageally fistulated sheep were allowed to graze freely and positions of individual sheep with respect t o compartments were recorded …
A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland
A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The High Uinta Primitive Area, Utah's most popular high mountain recreation area, has a reputation as an excellent trout and grayling fishery. Proposed for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, the area faces several management dilemmas. The primary problem being that managers must protect the resource from the effects of heavy recreational use without destroying the primitive and aesthetic dimensions of wilderness environment. It appears that much impact on the more accessible lakes is due to fishing use. The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine the proportions of angling to non-angling groups; (2) to describe certain characteristics …

The Closing Circle: A Review Of Barry Commoner's Book, Robert L. Scott
IUSTITIA
Commoner's book provides an opportunity to review the problems of pollution and their causes in the social, political, and economic fabric of our society. This review also provides an opportunity to compare and contrast natural and social laws. From this examination of the problem of pollution and the interface between natural and social law emerge certain ideological concerns confronting Americans as a people.

Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to indicate the reactions of the paper industry and its associated industries to metrication, standardization, and their effects on the industry. In this thesis a history of the metric system is given. The metric system, as it relates to the paper industry and its associated industries, is discussed. To get direct views on how the paper manufacturers, paper merchants, and printers felt about metrication and standardization a survey was made. From this survey, the questionnaires returned indicated that the majority of the paper manufacturers, paper merchants, and printers were mildly in favor of metrication …

WKU Administration Documents
Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Short-Term Memory For Temporal And Spatial Order Information, Alice F. Healy
Short-Term Memory For Temporal And Spatial Order Information, Alice F. Healy
Student Theses and Dissertations
The present investigation includes theoretical and experimental comparisons of short-term memory for temporal and spatial order information. Two questions are of central interest: whether short-term memory for letter sequences is limited to a verbal-acoustic coding process and whether the loss of information from short-term memory results from interference or from a mere decay with time. The basic experimental paradigm employed in the present study was the Brown-Peterson design. The items to be recalled were sequences of four consonants presented visually in varying temporal and spatial arrangements. On each trial the to-be-remembered sequence of consonants was followed by an intervening task …
Effects Of Ventromedial Hypothalamic Lesions On Food-Reinforced Fixed Ratio Responding, Ronald Paul Larkin
Effects Of Ventromedial Hypothalamic Lesions On Food-Reinforced Fixed Ratio Responding, Ronald Paul Larkin
Student Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has shown that rats with experimental lesions in the ventromedial area of the hypothalamus become obese due to hyperphagia. This striking effect on ad libitum food intake is sometimes accompanied by an increase and sometimes by a decrease in other measures of propensity to eat such as food-rewarded lever pressing. The current experiments attempt to discover the conditions under which these opposite effects on "food-motivated" behavior occur. Rats with ventromedial lesions made with steel electrodes showed a decrease relative to controls in lever pressing on a fixed ratio schedule. This effect was also seen in rats which had …
The Effects Of Acute Stress On Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Levels, Robert Joseph Collier
The Effects Of Acute Stress On Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Levels, Robert Joseph Collier
Masters Theses
The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. Study Group II was composed of populations of 5, each group containing all controls or all alloxinated rats. The populations of 15 were sacrificed at …
