The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling
The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling
New England Journal of Public Policy
The severity of the current AIDS epidemic, combined with the lack of successful biological interventions, necessitates an active educational program as the primary intervention strategy. Health education theories abound, but relatively little definitive application of these theories has been made to the issues involved with HIV transmission: sexual behavior and the sharing of intravenous drug apparatus. Significant behavior changes have occurred in some people, but the consistency of the behavior change may be difficult to sustain. Thus, the authors suggest that health education should be delivered repeatedly in culturally acceptable language and format, by community leaders, and through many different …

New England Journal of Public Policy
On occasion, the New England Journal of Public Policy will devote an entire issue to consideration of a public policy matter of major importance. The AIDS epidemic is such a matter, with a likely impact of overwhelming consequence well into the twenty-first century. The epidemic raises fundamental questions regarding the nature of individual freedom, our responsibilities to others, the always delicate balance between private rights and the public interest, and society's obligation to its "out" groups — whose members it has stigmatized, discriminated against, ridiculed, and treated as less than full and equal citizens. Indeed, it requires us to ask …
Hiv Antibody Testing: Performance And Counseling Issues, Michael Gross
Hiv Antibody Testing: Performance And Counseling Issues, Michael Gross
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article assesses the performance of currently used tests for exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the infectious agent associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS); suggests, in view of that information, guidelines for counseling people seeking HIV antibody testing; and evaluates the claim that because antibody test results will effect behavior change in those who are infected, all members of high-risk groups should be tested.
HIV testing is likely to yield a high proportion of false-positive results in low-risk populations and infants born to infected mothers. A negative result may not establish freedom from infection in high-risk groups or the …
Human Immunodeficiency Virus In Intravenous Drug Users: Epidemiology, Issues, And Controversies, Donald E. Craven
Human Immunodeficiency Virus In Intravenous Drug Users: Epidemiology, Issues, And Controversies, Donald E. Craven
New England Journal of Public Policy
Intravenous drug users are the second most common risk group for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States, and they account for approximately 25 percent of the cases. Drug users may spread human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by sharing contaminated drug injection paraphernalia and through sexual contact; women who use drugs can transmit the virus to their children. The rapid spread of HIV in this risk group and the fact that intravenous drug users are a source for heterosexual and perinatal transmission underscore the need for immediate intervention. In addition, many drug addicts are poor, have limited career possibilities, and …

The Use Of A Color Code System To Promote Compliance To Diet Information, Linda Rae Sparlin
The Use Of A Color Code System To Promote Compliance To Diet Information, Linda Rae Sparlin
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The use of color coded prompts to influence students' food selections in choosing a balanced meal was investigated. Yellow, green, blue, and orange dots, representing the four major food groups, grains, fruit and vegetables, dairy, and meat respectively were displayed at the point-of-selection on food entree cards along the serving line of a college dining hall. Two grain servings, two fruit/vegetable servings, one dairy serving, and one meat serving, were suggested as the optimal combination for a balanced meal. The results indicated that the prompts, although noticed and understood by the majority of the students, did not significantly influence their …

Neurobehavioral Symptoms In Mild Primary Hyperparathyroidism: Related To Hypercalcemia But Not Improved By Parathyroidectomy, Gregory G. Brown, Richard C. Preisman, Michael Kleerekoper
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The neurobehavioral symptomatology of severe primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been thoroughly described. Less is known about more mild cases. We evaluated 34 patients with mild PHPT and followed 19 for an average of six months. Of those cases followed, ten had parathyroidectomy (PTX). Patients with no neurobehavioral abnormalities had the lowest serum calcium levels (10.9 ± 0.88 mg/dL), patients with signs of affective disorder had intermediate levels (11.25 ± 0.66 mg/dL), and patients with signs of cerebral dysfunction had the highest levels (12.17 ± 1.17 mg/dL). Serum calcium significantly correlated with motor speed, psychomotor speed, fluid intelligence, and short term …
Mineral-Deficient Diets And The Pig’S Attraction To Blood: Implications For Tail-Biting, David Fraser
Mineral-Deficient Diets And The Pig’S Attraction To Blood: Implications For Tail-Biting, David Fraser
Abnormal Behavior Collection
In two experiments, individually penned growing pigs were exposed daily to two "tail models” (lengths of cotton cord about the size of a pig's tail), one of which had been impregnated with pigs' blood. When fed a balanced "control" diet, the pigs chewed significantly more on the blood-covered model than on the plain one, but with Iarge individual differences between animals. Four weeks of receiving a diet lacking all mineral supplements (iodized salt, dicalcium phosphate, limestone, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and selenium) caused a pronounced increase in chewing the blood-covered model, and 4 wk of recovery on the control diet …

Deer Damage Control Preferences And Use Decisions Of New York Orchardists, K. G. Purdy, W. F. Siemer, G. A. Pomerantz, T. L. Brown
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Previous studies in New York, the nation's second leading state in apple production, have contributed much to deer management decisions that give consideration to orchardists' concerns about crop damage. Little information, however, has been reported about orchardists' reasons for adopting or not adopting particular types of deer damage controls or their preference for various forms of possible damage control assistance. Two complementary studies, conducted in early 1987 by the Human Dimensions Research Unit, Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University, have addressed these information needs. A mail survey of orchardists in an important fruit-producing region of southeastern New York indicated that …

Similarities Between Human And Animal Spatial Memory: Item And Order Information, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Human subjects, sitting at the center of a circle of eight lights, were tested on analogues of radial-maze item-recognition (Roberts & Smythe, 1979) and order-recognition (Kesner & Novak, 1982) tasks. Subjects in the item-recognition condition saw a list of seven lights, and then the nonlist (eighth) light was tested against the first, fourth, or seventh light from the list. The sub- jects were required to point toward the non list light. Subjects in the order-recognition condition saw a series of eight lights, followed by a test of the first and second, fourth and fifth, or seventh and eighth serial positions. …

The Correlation Of Physiological Responses To Verbal Behavior During Environmental Stimuli Exposure, Cynthia Lou Baker
The Correlation Of Physiological Responses To Verbal Behavior During Environmental Stimuli Exposure, Cynthia Lou Baker
Graduate Theses
The study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that various environmental stimuli would elicit specific individual responses, as reflected in autonomic patterns. It then became the aim of the study to see whether the stimuli which controlled the physiological pattern would also control the verbal response. Three female and two male students volunteered for the single-subject experiment, where they were exposed to a 15-slide sequence of environment stimuli. Results indicated that when allowed to verbally respond without rating restrictions, responses varied greatly, limiting the possibilities of comparison. In kind, the physiological responses exhibited great variability. Results also supported the position …
An Analysis Of The Effects Of A Low Glycemic Diet On The Antisocial Behavior Of Juvenile Offenders, James Edward Longhurst
An Analysis Of The Effects Of A Low Glycemic Diet On The Antisocial Behavior Of Juvenile Offenders, James Edward Longhurst
Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine if a low glycemic diet contributes to a reduction in the incidence of antisocial behavior among male juvenile offenders.
One hundred forty juvenile offenders at a residential treatment center were randomly divided into treatment and nontreatment groups. The treatment group ate from a diet which contained foods low in glycemic characteristics. There was no dietary alteration for the control group.
Three instruments were used to measure differences between groups in antisocial behavior following a 5-week experimental period. These instruments include: (1) the Unusual Incident Report--a systematic and objective observer report form, (2) …

Task Load, Stimulus Encodability, Test Latency, And Processing Efficiency Effects On The Visual Recognition Memory Of The Chronic Neuropsychologically Impaired, Thomas W. C. Blash
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Psychologists assessing the visual recognition memory (VRM) of neuropsychologically compromised clients with the dual diagnosis of cognitive impairment and emotional sequelae confront two problems, including the dearth of studies dealing with the dually diagnosed (Menolascino, 1984) and inconsistent findings from past research on the effects of cerebral compromise on visual memory (Boller & DeRenzi, 1967; Cremonini, DeRenzi, & Faglioni, 1980; DeRenzi & Spinnler, 1966; DeRenzi, Faglioni, & Villa, 1977; Gouvier, 1983; Kimura, 1963). This study examines the effects of task load (number of stimuli), stimulus encodability, test latency, and cognitive processing efficiency on a group of dually diagnosed individuals who …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Since 1975, six families with the MEN-2A syndrome including 66 patients have been identified in The Netherlands. All these patients underwent thyroidectomy for C-cell hyperplasia and/or medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC); eight were symptomatic (Group A), 51 were relatives of patients found to be affected (Group B), and seven had had a negative screening test that became positive (Group C). To assess the effect of screening, we compared these groups with respect to the occurrence of metastatic MTC at thyroidectomy and the results of the postoperative calcitonin (CT) tests. We found that 87% of Group A, 37% of Group B; and …

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer
Honors Theses
The common bond between much of the film industry and Joseph McCarthy was insecurity and the drive for national approval. If one grasps the specific characteristics of McCarthy the man, and the methods of these politically "inspired" movies, we can to better place the period into context and acknowledge the fact that, if the citizenry is not aware, and is again caught by an ever-building wave of trickle down sentiment, the 1950s might not prove to be an isolated period in American history. Insecurity was not a fifties novelty. It still exists, and could potentially escalate anti-Communist policy and sentiment …
The Effect Of Ultrafiltration On Protein Quality Of Skimmilk And Cottage Cheese, Rita Y. Y. Tung
The Effect Of Ultrafiltration On Protein Quality Of Skimmilk And Cottage Cheese, Rita Y. Y. Tung
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Protein quality in freeze-dried skimmilk (SM), regular cottage cheese (RCC), retentate (Ret) and cottage cheese made from ultrafiltrated skimmilk (UFCC) were evaluated by chemical (amino acid score) and biological methods. Biological evaluation was at 5, 8 and 11% protein level in growing rats by measuring biological value (BV), net protein utilization (NPU) and nitrogen efficiency for growth (NEG) over a 14-day period. A 28-day protein efficiency ratio (PER) was determined on the same products at 10% protein level. Effects of added lactose on PER of retentate, regular and UFCC were also evaluated. The most limiting amino acids were cystine + …

Attraction To Blood As A Factor In Tail-Biting By Pigs, David Fraser
Attraction To Blood As A Factor In Tail-Biting By Pigs, David Fraser
Abnormal Behavior Collection
Canvas models, about the size of a pig's tail, were impregnated with pigs' blood or left plain, and were presented to pigs for 12 days in a 2-choice preference test. The pigs showed large, consistent, individual differences in response: some pigs chewed the models continuously while others chewed only slightly; some chewed much more on the blood-covered model, while others showed no preference. On average, the pigs chewed considerably more on the blood-covered model than on the plain one. In a second experiment, pigs presented with a choice test involving a blood-covered and a plain model showed a significant increase …
