Bulletin No. 272 - Transmissibility Of Bang's Disease Among Dairy Cattle In A Utah Dairy Village, D. E. Madsen, O. G. Larsen
UAES Bulletins
For a number of years it has been generally recognized that one of the most satisfactory methods of controlling Bang's disease in dairy cattle is to locate spreaders by means of the agglutination test and to eliminate them from the herd. The success of such a plan in relation to Utah dairy herds was not clearly understood because of the physical farm set-up peculiar to many communities in this state. The village of Hyde Park where this study was made is organized on such a community basis. Usually, a house and livestock buildings are constructed on the town lot, consisting …

Transportation Adjustments To Topography In Dallas, Texas, Edwin J. Foscue
Transportation Adjustments To Topography In Dallas, Texas, Edwin J. Foscue
Field and Laboratory
The outstanding physiographic feature of Dallas County is the White Rock Cuesta, which marks the western edge of the Austin Chalk limestone. Immediately below the chalk lies the easily eroded Eagle Ford Shale, hence the contact between the two strata is clearly marked by this westward facing cuesta, which extends from the southwest corner of the county to the middle northern border. The Trinity River, an antecedent stream, has cut a gap through the cuesta about midway between the northern and southern boundaries of the county…. The gap through the cuesta, and the narrowing of the Trinity River flood plain, …
Ichthyc Oil, John A. Riddick
Ichthyc Oil, John A. Riddick
Field and Laboratory
In the vicinity of Seefeld, in the Austrian Tyrol at an altitude of 1,000 meters lies a rock formation known geologically as Seefeld shale. It is found in veins varying in thick ness from 20 cm. to 100 cm. Enveloping this shale is the Gall enstein formation containing many fossil gastropods. The occurrence of this particular mollusk in large quantities dates the formation as Silurian. The Seefeld formation is a specific bituminous shale which yields a crude oil from which Ichtyhol is made. Centuries ago, the Tyrolian peasants would collect this shale, boil it with water in large pots, and …

A Century Of Scientific Exploration In Texas Part 1: 1820-1880, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
Science evolves and is perfected by the patient and criti cal labors of generations of investigators; and scientific progress is marked by an unending series of publications. To this fact, indeed, is due the perennial interest of the History of Science…. Texas has an almost unique place in the history of scientific exploration. This is probably owing to a number of singular coincidences.

Bulletin No. 268 - Alfalfa Seed Investigations And Other Crop Varietal Studies: Millard County, Utah 1929 To 1933 (Inclusive), George Whornham
UAES Bulletins
The Delta Area, in which most of the alfalfa-seed investigations and crop studies reported in this bulletin were conducted, is located in Millard County which is in the west-central part of Utah. This area lies in the Sevier Desert, within the eastern boundary of the Great Basin in the northeastern part of the county.
Parts of the area, particularly the farming sections near the towns of Oasis, Deseret, and Hinckley, have been among the oldest and most consistent alfalfa-seed producing sections of the United States. The peak of alfalfa-seed production in Millard County was reached in 1925, when approximately 14,000,000 …

Palaeontologic And Geologic Consideration Of Early Man In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
There has been much discussion recently relative to the geologic age of Yuma and Folsom artifacts. The writers submit the following palaeontological and geological data which may aid in a better interpretation of the subject. This paper deals with three localities in Nebraska where Yuma and Folsom implements have been found with extinct mammals; namely, the Scottsbluff Bison Quarry, the Sand Hill blow-out sites, and the Sioux County artifact sites.
Relative Efficiency Of Roots And Tops Of Plants In Protecting . The Soil From Erosion, Joseph Kramer, J. E. Weaver
Relative Efficiency Of Roots And Tops Of Plants In Protecting . The Soil From Erosion, Joseph Kramer, J. E. Weaver
Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)
An increasing realization of the importance of preventing or controlling soil erosion has resulted in numerous scientific investigations. Some of these are concerned with soil characteristics which promote or retard erosivity (Middleton, '30; Middleton et al., '34; Lutz, '34; and Bouyoucos, '35). Many have to do with engineering methods of reducing soil wastage (Bates and Zeasman, '30; Ramser, '30; Roe, '33; and Bartel, '35). But perhaps most were planned to discover the effects of plants in protecting and binding the soil, reducing runoff, and consequent loss of soil and subsoil (Sampson and Weyl, '18; Duley and Miller, '23; Lowdermilk, …

The Abortion Of Essential Organs In The Imperfect Flowers Of Benzoin Aestivale, Norris M. Paulson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There have been a number of investigations dealing with the abortion of essential organs in the imperfect flowers. Ulvin submitted a paper on Abortive Stamens and Carpels in Lychnis alba, Simon described stamen and carpel abortion in Cucumis stativus, Schaffner was able to control sex expression in Arisamea triphyllum and secure sex reversal in Cannabis stiva, Bessey determined the relationship of sex to the age of pollen in Cannabis sativa.

Factors Controlling Initial Establishment Of Western White Pine And Associated Species, Irvine T. Haig
Factors Controlling Initial Establishment Of Western White Pine And Associated Species, Irvine T. Haig
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
The principal object of the study was to determine the roles played by important physical factors of site, chiefly as these vary with overhead shade and hence are within the control of the silviculturist at the time of logging. No special effort was made to study the effect of biotic agents under natural conditions. Indeed, in order to insure as large a sample of seedlings as possible on which to follow losses caused by physical factors, biotic agents were discouraged wherever feasible. But as records of all mortality losses were kept by cause, some information was collected on the activity …
The Tympanis Canker Of Red Pine, John Raymond Hansbrough
The Tympanis Canker Of Red Pine, John Raymond Hansbrough
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
A new disease of red pine has recently been found in southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, western and central New York, northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and southern Michigan. It is of serious consequence only on plantation-grown red pine, but it also occurs occasionally on eastern white pine. On the former host it is characterized by axially elongated, annual main-stem cankers which are always centered at the nodes. Infection takes place through adhering lateral dead branches and the growth of the fungus after it gains entrance to the stem.is usually very rapid-Le., cankers up to three feet …

Bulletin No. 258 - Alfalfa-Seed Investigations In Utah, John W. Carlson
Bulletin No. 258 - Alfalfa-Seed Investigations In Utah, John W. Carlson
UAES Bulletins
For many years alfalfa-seed production problems have engaged the attention of investigators in various parts of the world. Those factors which are regarded as of greatest importance in seed-setting are general climate, current weather, air humidity, soil moisture, and insect relationships within the various alfalfa-seed districts. Some attention in research has been given to pollen fertility and ovule sterility, as well as to general flower dynamics in relation to environmental conditions. Efforts have been made to develop strains of alfalfa having pollen that is resistant to injury by moisture or having self-tripping flowers or autogamous strains of alfalfa whose flowers …

Bulletin No. 263 - Relative Produciton Of Feed Grain From Spring-Grown Cereals In Utah, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey
UAES Bulletins
Nearly one-third of the cropped acreage of Utah is devoted to cereals. Except for wheat, most of these crops are fed locally. In addition to this, an average of over a million bushels of corn, barley, and oats is shipped into the state each year to be used in various livestock and poultry industries.
The purpose of this publication is to show the comparative amount of feed produced by the different crops--wheat, oats, barley, and corn--under similar conditions as determined for the specified four years by acre-yields obtained in various agricultural regions of the state. One should bear clearly in …

Bulletin No. 259 - Drainage Of Land Overlying An Artesian Groudwater Reservoir: Final Report, O. W. Israelsen, W. W. Mclaughlin
UAES Bulletins
This bulletin constitutes a final report of some phases of cooperative drainage studies in Cache Valley, Utah. The drainage problem in Cache Valley is typical, in many respects, of drainage problems in other irrigated valleys of Utah and the West in general. Application of the principles indicated by the problems will doubtless add materially to the productivity of the land in the several communities concerned and will also contribute to the advancement of public welfare in the general improvement of health, economic, and social conditions. Alkali and water-logging affecting large areas are causes not only of low productivity of the …
