Distribution Of Fluorine In Utah County, Utah, Soils And Uptake Of Fluorine By Plants, E. Don Hansen May 1953

Distribution Of Fluorine In Utah County, Utah, Soils And Uptake Of Fluorine By Plants, E. Don Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fluorine released from industrial operations is eventually deposited on the surface of the earth, intercepted by plants, or absorbed in open bodies of water. the term fluorine as used in this thesis will be considered to refer to fluorine in combined form.

Industrial expansion has caused atmosphere pollution from fluorine in many parts of the United States. Utah County, Utah, is one of the affected area, and is the principal area of concern in this thesis.

In the spring of 1951, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station initiated a broad investigation on soil, water, plant, and animal problems arising from fluorine atmospheric …

The Total Surface Of Some Soils As Related To Permeability And Water Retention Characteristics, Warren W. Rasmussen May 1953

The Total Surface Of Some Soils As Related To Permeability And Water Retention Characteristics, Warren W. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is generally recognized that many of the chemical and physical properties of soils are dependent upon the surface activity of the finer soil fractions. The importance of the magnitude of the surface areas to such properties as base exchange, water-holding capacity, absorption of gases, and the plasticity of soils has been demonstrated. Attempts have been made to determine or estimate the surface of soils and soil fractions by various methods and to relate the values obtained to the physical and chemical characteristics exhibited by these materials. Most determinations have been based on calculations of surface area from mechanical analysis …

Debeaking Poultry To Control Cannibalism And Featherpicking, Boyd Bonzer, Glen Hart Feb 1953

Debeaking Poultry To Control Cannibalism And Featherpicking, Boyd Bonzer, Glen Hart

SDSU Extension Circulars

Debeaking is the practice of taking off part of the upper beak of a bird. This removes the part they pinch and tear flesh with, making it extremely difficult for them to be cannibalistic. The process can be accomplished with an electric debeaker, using a hot blade that cauterizes the wound as it cuts, preventing excessive bleeding.

Bulletin No. 359 - Broiler Production In Utah: An Economic Analysis, Earnest M. Morrison, Thomas I. Gunn Feb 1953

Bulletin No. 359 - Broiler Production In Utah: An Economic Analysis, Earnest M. Morrison, Thomas I. Gunn

UAES Bulletins

The production of broilers in Utah has become increasingly important in the last few years. Data are not available prior to 1950 but in that year the gross income from the production of broilers was $629,000. In 1951 almost one and a half million broilers were produced bringing a gross income of $1,322,000 to Utah producers.

With the rapid growth in recent years has come a demand for information about this new industry from producers, prospective producers, processors of meat and feed, agricultural leaders, and agricultural advisers. As with most new industries little specific information has been available concerning the …

Commercial Fertilizers For Winter Wheat In Relation To The Properties Of Nebraska Soils, R. A. Olson, H. F. Rhoades Jan 1953

Commercial Fertilizers For Winter Wheat In Relation To The Properties Of Nebraska Soils, R. A. Olson, H. F. Rhoades

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is the purpose of this bulletin to report the investigations that have been made correlating soil properties and fertilization practices with yields of winter wheat. Since the success or failure of fertilization practices is so dependent on specific soil conditions, an attempt has been made here to further characterize the major soils of the different sections of the state which are devoted to wheat production and to analyze fertilizer practices and results in relation to the soil properties determined. The data are summarized for the four sections of the state designated as southeastern, east-south-central, west-south-central and western Nebraska. These …

Your Weight, Rena Wills

SDSU Extension Circulars

There is a difference in just being alive and in being alive! Eating the right food will help you to: (1) feel better; (2) be more attractive; (3) live longer; and (4) increase the number of useful years. The food you eat becomes you—your blood, muscles, bones, and teeth; your size, strength, energy, stamina and ability to succeed; your morale, happiness, personality and attitude toward life; it becomes every part of you. And food is becoming to you if your choice is good. It gives you poise, confidence and sparkle. The food you eat is your nutrition.

Avian Botulism Information On Earlier Research Jan 1953

Avian Botulism Information On Earlier Research

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Over the years, the disease, avian botulism, has been an important factor limiting populations of waterfowl, particularly in the West. Great numbers (doubtless millions) of ducks have died from this disease, and because of such heavy tolls, studies of the malady were begun early in the century and continued intermittently to the present time.

This summary brings up to 1950 the series of investigations on botulism by Wetmore (1918), Kalmbach (1930, 1932), Kalmbach and Gunderson (1934), Sperry (1947), and others. This information has been compiled as a service to those concerned with conservation of our waterfowl resources. A cooperative agreement …

Canonical Field Theory -- A Prototype Example, Bruce Knight Jan 1953

Canonical Field Theory -- A Prototype Example, Bruce Knight

Knight Laboratory

The equations of a field may be put into a standard "Lagrangian" form from which several conservation laws follow directly. As an illustrative example, a string free to vibrate in two directions is investigated; this example clearly illustrates the outstanding features of the canonical theory, while avoiding the notational and physical complications encountered in most systems of practical interest. The conservation laws are interpreted for the string. The theory is further developed to express the field's behavior in terms of canonical coordinates and momenta. Quantum conditions are introduced, as in meson theory and quantum electrodynamics. It is shown that the …

Influence Of Certain Soil-Proftle Characteristics Upon The Distribution Of Roots Of Grasses, R. L. Fox, J. E. Weaver, R. C. Lipps

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

A method has been devised by Weaver and his coworkers (15) by which a root system may be sampled from the soil surface to a depth of maximum root penetration. The root system may then be separated from the soil without vertical displacement, photographed, and compared with soil profile characteristics. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to relate some chemical and physical properties of the soil to root distribution.

Concerning The Site Of Nitrogen Absorption In Rats Fed Autoclaved Or Raw Soybean Oil Mea, Raymond Borchers Jan 1953

Concerning The Site Of Nitrogen Absorption In Rats Fed Autoclaved Or Raw Soybean Oil Mea, Raymond Borchers

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Carroll, Hensley, and Graham (1) have concluded that much of the nitrogen absorption in rats fed raw soybean oil meal must take place in the cecum. This conclusion was reached from data showing that the apparent digestibility of raw soybean nitrogen in the terminal 20% of the small intestine was 32.65%, whereas in the feces the value was 76.96%. Values reported, for apparent digestibility of heated soybean nitrogen were 78.66% and 81.78%, respectively. This observation presented a notable advance in explaining the lower nutritive value of raw soybeans compared with autoclaved soybeans. It therefore seemed advisable to repeat this work …

From the laboratories and from the experimental farms have come research results that have and will continue to mean dollars and cents to the farmer and increased prosperity to the state. Here are a few brief statements of some of the results of the work during the past two years.

The Influence Of Fiber Length And Fiber Length Distribution On Some Strength Characteristics Of A Commercial Pulp, David Kraske Nov 1952

The Influence Of Fiber Length And Fiber Length Distribution On Some Strength Characteristics Of A Commercial Pulp, David Kraske

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

In this thesis, four groups of fibers with varying average fiber lengths have been separated from a coniferous bleached kraft pulp which had been beaten to different levels of freeness. The fractionation of the pulp was accomplished with a Bauer-McNett fiber classifier. The groups of fibers were analyzed for average fiber length, fiber length distribution and for their strength characteristics.

The results of this survey show interesting and significant trends, particularly with regard to the apparent density, tensile strength and the tearing resistance of the various fractions. The contributions of the various fractions to the strength characteristics of the whole …
