Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle Jan 1958

Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle

Faculty Honor Lectures

Utah is rapidly changing from what was once predominately an agricultural state to an urban and industrial state. This shift is not decreasing our water needs; it is often intensifying these needs and creating many new problems. Perhaps we should ask ourselves-are we prepared to recognize and accept these changes? Are we really facing up to the problems that are developing or are we turning our heads and hoping they will go away? These changes involve technical, legal, and sociological problems never before encountered, some of which I should like to discuss.

Before attempting to look at Utah's water problems …

4. Social Darwinism, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart

Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences

The singular impact of Darwin in fields other than biology can be attributed largely to one man, Herbert Spencer (1820- 1903). It was Spencer, not Darwin, who coined the expression "survival of the fittest." Although neglected today except by historians of the nineteenth century thought, Spencer's influence on his own time was so great that Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes was able to wonder if "any writer of English except Darwin has done so much to affect our whole way of thinking about the universe." Herbert Spencer was born into a traditionally nonconformist English family of modest means. He refused a …

Rb58-186 The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Tee Houses, Virginia Y. Trotter

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

In this manuscript, data are presented regarding the space and characteristics of multistory tee-shaped farmhouses. The tee house is shaped like the letter "t", one wing perpendicular to the main portion of the house in such a way that the main portion projects on each side.

The multistory tee house as found to be most prevalent in the areas of Nebraska included in this study. The sample comprised houses chosen by a method of random sampling. A personal interview was made at each farmhouse by a home economist and an agricultural engineer. Detailed measurements of the entire house and a …

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson Jan 1958

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The purpose of this booklet is to provide a ready field reference for identification, sexing and aging of common game species. It has purposely been kept in simplified form, presenting only those techniques which can commonly be applied in the field and avoiding those which would require special equipment and skills. Untrained personnel should be given demonstrations of the techniques, and thereafter this reference should serve as a reminder. It is not expected that the reference could successfully be used without such demonstration. Certain of the techniques such as cloaca! examination of waterfowl may require considerable practice by the individual. …

Organizing Watersheds In South Dakota, Joseph T. Paulson Nov 1957

Organizing Watersheds In South Dakota, Joseph T. Paulson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Wherever you live, you are within a watershed. Your farm, ranch, home on a town lot, or your business in the city are all within the natural boundaries of some watershed. All the lands and waters of the nation are bounded by natural drainage divides. Federal and state watershed acts are intended to help you and your neighbors manage your watershed, conserve the soil, and make better use of the rain where it falls. The federal act provides for technical and financial assistance, whereas the state act provides for necessary administration, operations, and management. The state act provides a taxing …

Prices And Costs For Use In Farm And Ranch Planning, Russell L. Berry Oct 1957

Prices And Costs For Use In Farm And Ranch Planning, Russell L. Berry

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The prices of most things farmers and ranchers produce will vary widely in future years as they have in the past. It is not possible to reorganize a farm or ranch every time there is a variation in prices. The benefits of a given crop rotation can only be secured after several years. When crop rotations are changed fields and fences may also need to be changed. Buildings may need to be built or remodeled to handle the new crops. Livestock enterprises should be chosen with regard to the crops produced. Since many years are often required to establish profitable …

The Evaluation Of The Printability Of Papers By The I.G.T. Method, Robert W. Shaw

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent the I.G.T. Tester could be used to determine the printability of paper. The investigation was carried out along two related paths. First to determine if the I.G.T. Tester could be used to give indications of actual press printability and secondly to determine if the results of the I.G.T. Tester were reproducible.

Combining Field Fertilizer Trials With Soil Tests In An Effort To Obtain The Most Suitable Soil Nitrogen And Phosphorous Tests For Southern Alberta, Einard Haniuk May 1957

Combining Field Fertilizer Trials With Soil Tests In An Effort To Obtain The Most Suitable Soil Nitrogen And Phosphorous Tests For Southern Alberta, Einard Haniuk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Under dryland farming operations, the use of fertilizers is often restricted due to limited crop response arising from limited seasonal moisture. Once this dryland area is brought under irrigation, there is increased use of fertilizers and increased demands for greater exactness in amounts of fertilizers to apply, due to efforts which are made to increase the returns from the land by introduction of new farming techniques and crops.

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1957

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The accurate geologic dating of Pleistocene vertebrate localities which occur outside the glaciated regions has always been difficult. Several new fossil localities in Nebraska now provide data for a better understanding of the paleoecology and faunal evidence of the medial Pleistocene of the Great Plains region.

A fossil quarry, containing the remains of both vertebrates and invertebrates, has been discovered in south-central Nebraska (11/2 miles south and west of Angus in Nuckolls County). The fossils are preserved in Sappa silts in a lime concentration zone (C horizon) of a Yarmouth paleosol. The calcium carbonate appears to have been responsible for …

Correlation By Spectrographic Analysis Of Bentonite In The Gulf Series Of Dallas Area, Texas, Eugene Herrin Jan 1957

Correlation By Spectrographic Analysis Of Bentonite In The Gulf Series Of Dallas Area, Texas, Eugene Herrin

Field and Laboratory

Spectrographic determination of Si:Al and Ca:Mg ratios in bentonite from the Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford shale of the Dallas area, Texas, indicate that variations in these ratios among different bentonite beds are significantly greater than variations within a single bed. The correlation of one bed over a distance of about 9 miles is supported by both spectrographic and stratigraphic evidence. Correlation of bentonite in the Dallas area with similar beds near Waco, Texas, 120 miles to the south, now seems possible. If so, the Eagle Ford shale might be divided into time-rock units that would be independent of paleontology.

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook Dec 1956

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook

Faculty Honor Lectures

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

Before 19'00 most of the animals in the West grazed on the range all year. However, irrigation crop production has expanded …
