Freshwater mussels are facing an increasing need for conservation due to their declining populations. More data is needed on mussel distributions, especially in tributaries of large rivers to properly conserve and restore populations. Big Shoal Creek and Little Shoal Creek are two upland-tributaries of the Arkansas River (Lake Dardanelle) in which no records exist for freshwater mussel populations. We addressed this knowledge gap by sampling a total of 9 sites in Little Shoal Creek and 18 sites in Big Shoal Creek to determine the abundance and distribution of mussels in these streams. Mussels were sampled using a timed-search approach. A …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Despite significant advancement in cancer treatments, therapies with minimal toxicity to healthy cells are still limited. One targetable weakness of cancer cells is their sensitivity to oxidative stress. We find that the combination of two antioxidants—the common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and a manganese porphyrin in clinical trials, MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+ (MnBuOE)—increases oxidative stress and causes apoptotic death in several cancer cell lines, but not in mouse primary fibroblasts. Investigating the mechanism of cell death, MnBuOE is observed to catalyze the oxidation of tBHQ, producing the electrophilic quinone tert-butylquinone (tBQ). A critical role for tBQ and its electrophilic character was revealed with …

Jurnal Ilmu Ternak Universitas Padjadjaran
Solid organic fertilizer efficiently utilizes livestock waste, with laying hen excreta providing the highest nitrogen (N) content among livestock manure. Combining laying hen excreta with dairy cow manure and fiber sources as a fertilizer base is expected to meet KEPMENTAN No. 261 of 2019 standards. To maintain essential nutrients (N, P, K), the fertilizer is enriched with Pseudomonas sp., Herbasirillum sp., and Streptomyces sp. This study aims to analyzing the effect of chicken excreta on macronutrient content (N, P, K), carbon (C) levels, C/N ratio, coliform presence, and microbial viability. The experiment followed a completely randomized design (CRD) with …

Human activities, either intentional or unintentional, have significantly influenced the global distribution and genetic composition of many species. The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSF) is a species native to North America that has rapidly gained commercial importance due to its bioconversion efficiency, upcycling organic waste into higher-value products. Through human-mediated dispersal associated with trade and insect farming, BSF has been introduced widely across the Old World, including Africa, where both wild and captive populations are now established. Despite its expanding global distribution, the demographic history and genomic consequences of these introductions remain poorly understood, particularly in Africa. This work …

Fuzzy Pi Controller For Frequency Control Of A Diesel-Pv-Battery-Based Islanded Ac Microgrid, M. S. Elborlsy, Ramadan M. Mostafa, Hossam E. Keshta, Mohamed A. Ghalib
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Effective management of modern electrical grids requires intelligent and adaptable control mechanisms to effectively balance power supply and demand, particularly in times of significant disturbances. Microgrids predominantly harness renewable energy sources (RES), which are inherently variable, for electricity generation. However, due to these fluctuations, conventional control systems often struggle to optimize performance under diverse operational conditions. This study addresses the need for improved frequency regulation in isolated AC microgrids (MGs) by proposing a fuzzy PI (FPI) controller capable of dynamically adjusting control strategies to accommodate disturbances such as three-phase faults, sudden changes in load, and variations in solar irradiance. A …

Results showed no significant change in yield between the different production methods, …
Cotton Production In The Arkansas Delta - A Focus On Water Quality Impacts, Trenton Alexander Barker
Cotton Production In The Arkansas Delta - A Focus On Water Quality Impacts, Trenton Alexander Barker
Student Theses and Dissertations
Farmers in Arkansas irrigate more farmland than 47 other states in the U.S. Agricultural production is a vital contributor to the economy of the state; however, it also contributes heavily to water quantity and quality issues within the Mississippi River Basin and the Gulf of Mexico. Row-crop producers have adopted soil and water conservation practices to mitigate these effects, yet many farmers remain hesitant to adopt conservation methods due to uncertainties about their effects on yield and profits. This thesis evaluates the water quality impacts of conventional and conservation cotton tillage systems under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Runoff, plant development, …

Cover crops, utilized by producers to provide seasonal soil cover between cash or forage crop cycles, play a significant role in diversifying crop rotations and enhancing environmental sustainability. This research aims to assess the economic impact and farmer perceptions of cover crop adoption in the southeastern United States, particularly in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Producers show interest in adopting cover crops with increasing awareness of their benefits, such as improved soil health, water quality, weed suppression, and reduced soil erosion. Despite these advantages, adoption rates are hindered by economic challenges. A survey conducted from January to March 2021 gathered data …
Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković
Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković
Administration and Staff Articles and Research
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is an effective inorganic gene delivery carrier due to its ability to transport genetic cargo across cell membranes, protect it from proteolysis, and enable escape from late endosomes via pH-controlled dissolution. However, its transfection efficiency remains lower than that of viral agents, prompting studies of hybrids with cationic molecules or phases to enhance the gene delivery performance. This study reports on the synthesis of HAp in regular and reverse micellar regions of a ternary microemulsion system composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), 1-hexanol and water. Spectroscopic characterization revealed that CTAB headgroups adopted more ordered supramolecular conformations in reverse micelles …

The Gene Encoding Ornithine Decarboxylase For Putrescine Biosynthesis Is Essential For The Viability Of Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Shiqi Xu, Bibek G C, Alex Phan, Chenggang Wu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe associated with periodontitis and colorectal cancer. It secretes putrescine, a polyamine that promotes biofilm formation by oral co-colonizers and enhances the proliferation of cancer cells. However, the physiological importance of putrescine for F. nucleatum itself remains unexplored. Here, we show that putrescine biosynthesis, mediated by the ornithine decarboxylase gene oda, is essential for F. nucleatum viability. Deletion of oda was only possible when a functional copy was provided in trans, and CRISPR interference of oda expression resulted in complete growth defects. The essentiality of oda was conserved across multiple subspecies. Supplementation with …

Southern blight, a disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii (S. rolfsii), is favored by the hot and humid conditions of the southeastern United States, posing a significant challenge to hemp production in Tennessee. Black plastic mulch (BPM), commonly used for weed control, can exacerbate the disease. There is limited information on the effects of straw mulch (SM), known to moderate soil temperatures and moisture, or planting time in disease management. Field studies were conducted in 2022 and 2023 at Tennessee State University to evaluate the effects of planting time, mulch type, and biofungicide application on disease severity, weed …
Temporal Variation Of Benthic Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Upland Intermittent Streams In The Boston Mountains, R. J. Mccollough, K. B. Hecke
Temporal Variation Of Benthic Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Upland Intermittent Streams In The Boston Mountains, R. J. Mccollough, K. B. Hecke
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Benthic aquatic macroinvertebrates are some of the most highly used organisms for biomonitoring and assessing stream health. However, biomonitoring is often done in one season, potentially missing important taxa and inaccurately reflecting the community as well as stream health. In addition, while road crossing effects have also been extensively researched the last few decades, these studies are also often conducted in one season, likely misrepresenting the community structure and the overall effects of the road crossing. The highly known River Continuum Concept (RCC) is often applied to these benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate communities. This study aimed to examine aquatic macroinvertebrate communities …

Marine cold-spells are an understudied phenomena which can both negatively impact marine wildlife and provide thermal refugia for species displaced by climate change. To develop forward-looking and climate-ready management schemes, it is critical to examine how marine species respond to cold-spells, how long-term warming will affect marine cold-spells over the next century, and how these future cold-spells will in turn affect species of conservation concern, particularly in marine protected areas. To this end, we detect marine cold-spells across the California Current System, a productive Eastern Boundary Upwelling System, relative to a fixed baseline (1980–2009) and to a detrended time series …

The family Arenaviridae encompasses zoonotic, rodent-borne pathogens (e.g., Lassa, Machupo, and Junín viruses) that cause severe viral hemorrhagic fevers with high case fatality rates. The current therapeutic landscape is severely limited, underscoring the urgent need for novel antiviral strategies. A promising approach involves combining directly acting antivirals with host-targeted antivirals. A compelling host-targeted antiviral target is the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). This ubiquitous ligand-activated transcription factor is a recognized pro-viral host factor across multiple viral families. Building on prior work with Junín and Tacaribe viruses, we investigated whether the AHR inhibitor CH223191 could enhance the virus-directed antiviral activity of favipiravir …

An expanding body of research suggests that diet and nutrition may play an influential yet underrecognized role in problematic and criminal behaviors. This article synthesizes research linking excessive consumption of sugar and ultra-processed foods to adverse neurobehavioral outcomes, impaired impulse control, aggression, mood dysregulation, and sleep problems. Integrating research suggests that metabolic disruption, neuroinflammation, and gut–brain axis dysfunction may influence cognitive and emotional regulation. While criminal behavior is complex and multifactorial, this article emphasizes nutrition as a modifiable factor to inform forensic mental health practice, correctional policy, and rehabilitative strategies.
