The amount of tryptophane required for maintenance and growth is small (2). When an excess is supplied to some animals, kynurenic acid is excreted (3) and, under certain conditions, kynurenine also (4). Although these are quantitatively the most important of the known metabolic products of tryptophane, the amounts excreted in extensive tests in the dog and rabbit have usually accounted for less than half, more often for less than a third, of the tryptophane administered (4-6).

Trichinosis is a disease caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis. When meat containing encysted larvae is consumed the cysts are dissolved by the action of the gastric juice in the stomach and the larvae migrate to the intestine where they mature, copulate and give birth to living young within a week of the original infection. The larvae enter the lymph spaces and are carried to the thoracic duct from which they reach the venous circulation and thence the arterial circulation by way of the heart and the pulmonary capillaries. Within the Marquette chemical laboratories under the direction and supervision of Dr. John R. Koch, professor and head of the Chemistry Department, many noteworthy advances in enzyme chemistry have been achieved. A new type all glass, single unit viscometer was developed and perfected by Koch and now is the basis of the study of enzyme activity by viscometric methods. The use of this viscometer is not limited solely to work in these laboratories but has also been used with great success in bating and brewing.

An attempt was made to determine the minimum concentration of the different peptones which are necessary to support the growth of a group of aerobic microorganisms. The medium for this experiment was semi-solid glucose peptone agar, with the peptone being varied in amount and kind.

1. The growth supporting properties of the peptones under investigation varied a great deal.
2. The minimum concentration of peptone necessary for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus lactis, and Salmonella pullorum was determined.

The problem involved in this investigation was that of determining the effect of environmental factors upon the germination of twelve species of weed seeds. The seeds were harvested, divided into three groups designated as Groups I, II and III, and stored under different environmental conditions. Group I, a temperature control group, was stored under conditions of normal temperature, Group II under continued cold and Group III was subjected to intermittent freezing and thawing. In this investigation a survey of Nebraska soils has been made in order to determine the distribution of the aerobic nonsymbiotic and symbiotic nitrogen fixers of the genera Azotobacter and Rhizobium respectively. In connection with this survey, some of the characteristics of the soils which may bring about this distribution were studied. Up to this time practically no research has been reported on the microflora of the soils of Nebraska.
