The object of this investigation was to produce polyploid cells in the salivary glands of Drosophila melanogaster by treatment with paradichlorbenzene. Polyploidy is the condition in which the number of chromosomes in the nucleus is an exact multiple of the somatic or diploid number greater than two. This phenomena has often been referred to as produced by incomplete nuclear division.

In a series of investigations, Massopust describes various effects he obtained with an invisible radiation which he called infra-red. The results he obtained seemed to indicate that this radiation might have some effect on development and growth. Hence, the Drosophila Melanogaster was chosen for experimentation to ascertain whether or not the invisible radiation he used would produce mutations. Personal communications from this author disclosed that up to the present writing he has not been able to establish definitely that the radiation lies somewhere in the infra-red band of the electro-magnetic field. In Utah, a vast industry of livestock grazing, which is the backbone of the state's agriculture, has arisen during the past 75 years. Range land furnishes between 6 and 7 million animal unit months of forage to some 2 1/2 million sheep and 275 thousand range cattle. Income from meat, wool, and range livestock sales in Utah is about $15,801,500 annually, of which $11,700,000 is calculated to be obtained from range lands exclusive of cultivated pastures.

Father Raymond H. Reis, S.J., and Robert A. Littleford, Ph.D., both of the staff of Marquette's University Zoology department, while working upon an experiment in the feeding to the common house mouse, "Mus Musculus", noted that in the two strains of mice that were used, the white variety of mouse was a trifle larger than the black variety, but that their weights were identical. They suggested the possibility of a skeletal difference that seemed to be most prominent in the head of the mice.

To the casual observer perhaps no sight could be more commonplace than that of an insect alighting upon a Kansas sunflower. But the relationship which exists between plant and insect is a matter which is often unknown even to the specialist. And yet a lack of understanding of these relationships has at times resulted in inconvenience, loss and even in calamity. To determine the relationship which certain insects bear to some of our native western Kansas forbs and weedy plants is the purpose of this study.

This paper reports the findings of a study of coyote numbers, with particular reference to fluctuations, their periodicity, if any, and their possible causes. In order to answer these questions studies of bounty payments were made in four centrally located counties of Kansas. The counties selected for this study were Ellis, Russell, Edwards, and Harvey. The location of these counties is shown in figure I on page 5. A record of these bounty payments was secured by checking through the records in the office of the county clerk of these counties for all years in which records were on file.

The feeding of large amounts of beet molasses to young hogs causes a condition that is characterized by a wobbly gait, and that is frequently fatal. Hog raisers have apparently recognized this condition for a number of years, since a number of farmers have reported it in their animals. Some farmers have also reported breeding failures and abortions when beet molasses was fed to brood sows. Consequently, beet molasses has not been considered a good hog feed by Utah raisers.

Although studies have been made on the feeding-habits of bass-fingerlings in northern and eastern parts of the United States, no studies seem to have been published in the Southwest. Differences, both qualitative and quantitative, have been found between the plankters produced in the Southwest and in northern waters; and it is to be expected that these differences are reflected in the diet of fingerling fish.
