Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents

A revised version of the final draft of Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's doctoral dissertation was published in Ecological Monographs in 1947. In her dissertation, Dirks-Edmunds compared the Douglas fir forest community on Saddleback Mountain in Oregon to an oak-hickory community in Illinois. Dirks-Edmunds, a 1937 graduate of Linfield College, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers

Very little information is at hand regarding the ability of molds to synthesize riboflavin. Few citations pertaining directly to riboflavin production by true molds are available.2 Pontovich (1943) found as much as 2 mg riboflavin per g of Aspergillus flavus mycelium. Tanner et at. (1945) determined the quantity of riboflavin in the submerged fermentation media of Penicillium chrysogenum. The highest value found was 1. 36 mg per ml. The primary purpose of this study was to screen several hundred isolates, recently obtained from soil, crop residues, and composts, for their ability to produce riboflavin on a wheat bran substrate.

The national wildlife refuge at Chincoteague, Virginia, is one of the newest in a chain of sanctuaries placed along the flight lanes of the waterfowl. Coming down from the north the principal links of the chain are Parker River, Montezuma, Susquehanna, Brigantine, and Bombay Hook. Then from Chincoteague the links run south, through Back Bay and Pea Island, Mattamuskeet and Cape Romain. Chincoteague, like other waterfowl refuges, is needed because birds migrate, and because in so doing they expose themselves to great dangers.

Density is the amount of matter in a unit volume of space. In this paper it will be expressed in grams per cubic centimeter. As a rule we think of density as being applicable to the things we deal with in everyday life, forgetting that it is an important characteristic of matter, from atomic nucleus to the stellar universe. To a great extent the behavior of matter may be explained by a knowledge of density.

The present brief list was compiled primarily for the use of students in a course on the History of Science offered by the senior author at Southern Methodist University. It is far from complete: scholars conversant with the field will note omission of works they consider of primary importance, and the inclusion of others, to them of secondary interest. Peromyscus truel's a fairly common inhabitant of the upper sonaranlife zone of the Western States. It is an excellent laboratory anlmal with the limitation that captivity must be accompanied by forced activlty, in order to keep the animals within the limits of normal activity. This mouse is polyestrous and breeds from early spring to late fall. Observations have shown pregnancy in late September and in early February. It is the writer's belief that ovulation in the ovary occurs only when copulation has taken lace, because corpora lutea has only been found in pregnant or lactating females. The evidence is scanty …

The discovering of the genetic value of Drosophila salivary gland chromosomes by Painter, Heitz, and Bauer in 1934 posed a problem of technique to the microtomist that is still being improved upon and widened. The staining of these chromosomes fer better study and to determine their properties, both chemical and physical, has been the object of intense research. This paper is the result of my work in connection with this subject.

During the past biennium there has been a general expansion in the research program of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Although some of the investigations were curtailed by lack of personnel and equipment and the pressure of wartime assignments, many of the staff were able to devote more time to research because of a lessening of the teaching load at the College.
