Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki

A new species of Gyrodactylus was observed on the skin, gills, and fins of the brook stickleback from the English Coulee, Grand Forks, North Dakota during the summers of 1953-1955. Host-specificity is usually striking in the monogenetic trematodes and since this parasite was not observed on any other species of fish from this body of water or the nearby Turtle River, it was studied in detail and is here described as a new species, G. eucaliae.

Nobel, Chairman of the Department of Zoology, College of the Pacific, Urechis caupo was introduced as a representative of the fauna of the mud flats of Tomales Bay. The unusual manner in which this animal lives would stimulate the curiosity of any student interested in biology, and especially those associated with marine life. When the writer took an introductory course in Microtechnique in 1954-55, he was impressed by the inadequacy of some microtechnical procedures recommended in triple staining, and he felt disappointed and discouraged by the consistently inferior results. He resolved to attempt modifications or to develop a new technique which could be relied upon to achieve anticipated results. This is a report on two years of efforts to develop a simple dependable technique in polychrome staining for histological studies. This study on the anatomy of the rabbit was based on dissected material from the biological laboratories of the College of the Pacific. Because of existing errors in many of the present references to rabbit anatomy, the guide was prepared to meet the expressed need for a concise, illustrated outline of basic anatomy of the rabbit which might be used by students in an introductory course in mammalian or human anatomy. Since it is assumed that the guide would be supplemented by a dissection manual, syllabus, or textbook, textural material of such an outline is presented here in outline form.

During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

William Lloyd began his career as a collector and student of birds in western and southeastern Texas in 1880, after having come to Texas in 1876. For some time he lived in San Antonio (the information is fragmentary in many details), and in this period (1879) he first emerges as the discoverer of cement-rock near San Antonio, which resulted (1880) in the first cement manufactory west of the Mississippi River.

In recent years reclamation activities in the Columbia Basin of Washington have resulted in profound changes in the character of the entire landscape throughout this region. The present study is an attempt to clarify some of the biological effects of impoundment behind O'Sullivan Dam in the Potholes area, Grant County (Johnsgard 1955b). In this area, a large expanse of moving sand dunes and a high water table are responsible for causing the formation of numerous small water areas, or "potholes," between the dunes. This work represents a study on the biological oxidation of molybdenite, MoS2. The principal objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of the biological oxidation of molybdenite, to determine the physical and chemical conditions under which the oxidative process occurs, and to develop a strain of bacteria or alter the activity of the microorganisms by acclimatization to increase their activity on sulfide minerals, in particular molybdenite. Minerals used in this study were pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), molybdenite concentrate, and molybdenite ore. The writer undertook a preliminary investigation of the taxonomy and geographic distribution of a group of neuropterous insects, the Chrysopidae, in Utah. The main purposes of the investigation were to find what species and forms of these beneficial insects occur in Utah, to provide means for their identification, and to report upon their geographical distribution. Two main methods of investigation were employed. The first, a bibliographic method, was to carefully review the literature concerning the Chrysopidae of the United States for all references pertaining to their distribution and their taxonomy. The site of investigation for this work was Salem Pond, Salem (formerly known a.s Pond Town), Utah. It was settled in 1851 by David Crockett and David Fairbanks. Colonization began in 1856 when a fort of adobe and lumber houses was built near the pond, and later, several industries located there, benefited by the water wheels constructed by the pioneers (Huf4 l947).
