The Geology Of The Palmer Quadrangle, Ellis County, Texas, James Alfred Pitkin

Field and Laboratory

Location of Palmer Quadrangle.-This quadrangle lies in northeastern Ellis County. It is bounded by the meridians 96° 37' 30" and 96° 45' 00", and by the parallels 32° 22' 30" and 32° 30' 00", and includes an area of some 61 square miles. U.S. Highway 75 crosses the quadrangle, and there is a complementary network of secondary roads. Palmer, Trumbull, and Boyce are the only towns within the area. General Stratigraphy.-Bedrock consists of the upper chalk member of the Austin chalk and two members of the Taylor marl, the Lower Taylor marl member and the Wolfe City sandstone member. All …

Recently there came back into my hands a lent-and forgotten-dossier of 1929 correspondence with Swiss and German universities and libraries-a correspondence dealing with the Swiss naturalist, Jacob Boll, who spent the last years of his life in Texas. His life, with that of other naturalists, is sketched in my Naturalists of the Frontier (1937, 1948). Such a recovery reminds one of the passing of time, and a long-made promise to put into print an account of the men of science (sit venia verbo) of Early Texas. They were extensive in that they included an area of 60,000 sq. mi. in western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and portions of the four adjoining states. Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.

The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.

The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.

Ovic embryos possess an enveloping egg membrane containing chitin. On this account, this eye worm species is …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Birds On Middleton Island, Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

A survey of the birds of Middleton Island was made in June 1956. Forty-five species of birds were recorded. Of these, at least 16 species were breeding, four other species were possibly breeding, and 2.5 species were regarded as transients. The distribution of the breeding birds was correlated with six major ecological formations. Five of the latter were based on vegetational characteristics, while the rocky cliffs comprised the sixth.

The avian fauna of Middleton Island consists mainly of species found in the Prince William Sound region, to the north. An important exception was the Lapland Longspur, which previously has not …

Grinnell Lake, Lake Josephine, and Swiftcurrent Lake, at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet in northwestern Montana, are comparable with lakes in the montane zone defined by Pennak for lakes at elevations between 8,200 feet and 10,500 feet in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado. Five species of Copepoda, six Cladocera, and four Ostracoda were collected in the lakes studied. The population of microcrustacea in these lakes was most dense in or slightly above the masses of rooted aquatic vegetation growing to a height of six to 10 inches above the bottom wherever the water was between three feet and …

The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.

A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …

Employing the electron microscope, the writer studied the ultra-structure of the choroid plexus of the lateral and the 4th ventricles of the brain in seven species of animals comparatively. No such extensive comparative investigation has been made before with this instrument. The animals represent, in the main, species which have served previously, both in physiological and light microscopical studies on this organ, and consist of several specimens each of the frog, the opossum, the hamster, the guinea pig, the rat, the rabbit and the dog.

The high incidence of tooth decay, one of the most common diseases found in all age groups, gives a reason for the study of methods to prevent dental caries. Certain dietary factors, specifically carbohydrates, have been implicated in the decay process. Since diet influences both the oral and systemic environments in which the teeth develop, mature, age, and decay (1), many studies have been conducted to determine the effects of oral administration of different carbohydrates on dental caries. Antibiotics first came to the public's attention in 1945, when penicillin and streptomycin were released by the United States government to fight human diseases. Later, other antibiotics were released and experimental work was done on control of plant and animal diseases. By 1948 plant pathologists found that certain plant diseases such as walnut blight, tomato and pepper bacterial spot, soft rot, cucumber, downy mildew, chrysanthemum bacterial wilt, and lilac bacterial blight could be controlled by antibiotics.

Investigation of primary production in streams and rivers has lagged behind similar investigations in marine and lacustrine environments. Recently, however, Odum (1956) has demonstrated methods that allow the estimation of productivity of most moving waters. For reasons discussed later in this paper, Odum's method is not satisfactory for shallow, very rapid rivers as typified by Logan River. The present investigation then was primarily an exploration of a method possibly applicable to measurement of productivity in shallow rapid rivers.

Previous work with rats, hamsters and monkeys has shown a direct relationship between refined diets high in carbohydrates and caries susceptibility. Adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals have been shown to be necessary for proper tooth development and resistance to decay. The glycoprotein content of hamster teeth raised on a non-cariogenic Purina ration was reported to be lower than the amount found in the teeth of animals raised on a high sugar cariogenic diet.
