In recent years an increased interest in the use of behavioral characteristics in evolutionary studies has developed, and this is particularly true in the case of waterfowl. The classical studies of Heinroth (1911), who was one of the first to apply knowledge of waterfowl behavior to systematics, have been elaborated on by Lorenz (1941; 1951-1953) in his important contribution toward the understanding of relationships in the Anatinae. These, and other, studies have stressed the qualitative behavioral differences occurring among different species as providing possible isolating mechanisms through their presumed function of conveying species-specific recognition signals. This student inventory of insects found on Saddleback Mountain is part of Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's ecological study of the area. The physical collection of the Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Papers (see collection information below) includes similar tabulations from multiple classes at Linfield, all documenting insect type and number found. Dr. Dirks-Edmunds compiled her students' research into various reports on her study's progress.

Dr. Dirks-Edmunds graduated from Linfield College in 1937; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

Preliminary Report: Monolayer Behavior Studies, 1959, Bureau Of Reclamation

During the fall of 1959, monolayer behavior studies were made on two lakes in the southwest; Boulder Basin of Lake Mead, Nevada, and Lake Sahuaro near Phoenix, Arizona. These studies were made to evaluate the effect of geographical and climatological conditions on movement and behavior of monolayers. The Lake Sahuaro tests also were used to provide data for design and development of improved methods of application and maintenance of a film on this lake in anticipation of full scale, evaporation-reduction tests to be performed there during the summer of I960. Summary

Furfural was obtained in significant amounts by the action of mineral acid on pentose sugars. Pentose sugars are present in Sulfite Spent Liquors because of the hydrolysis which takes place during the pulping. The dehydrating action of the acid on the pentoses takes place during the pulping. The dehydrating action of the acid on the pentoses takes place at about 100 degrees Centrigrade. The furfural was distilled from the raw acidified spent liquor and can be purified further by fractional distillation. Hardwood Sulfite Spent Liquors gave the highest yields. This is because hardwoods contain more five carbon sugars. A …

For several years members of the dermestid beetle genus Trogoderma have attracted widespread attention, particularly since T. granariurn Everts, the khapra beetle, became established as an introduced pest in Arizona, California, Mexico, and New Mexico. This species has been the object of a control program to remove it as a hazard to stored grain and to prevent its spread to parts of the country where it is not known to occur. Species of Trogoderma other than the khapra beetle may also build up to damaging numbers in stored products. Information has been obtained on these species, as well as on …

From October, 1952, until August, 1958, the small mammals on a relict area near Hays, Kansas, were studied. The observations were undertaken to establish a standard to which the mammals of variously disturbed areas could be compared; also, information concerning the relations of the species of mammals to the communities of the mixed prairie was sought.

Without doubt, waterfowl of the family Anatidae have provided the greatest number and variety of bird hybrids originating from both natural and captive conditions. The recent compilation by Gray (1958) has listed approximately 400 interspecies hybrid combinations in this group, which are far more than have occurred in any other single bird family. Such a remarkable propensity for hybridization in this group provides a great many possibilities for studying the genetics of speciation and the genetics of plumage and behavior, and it also provides a valuable tool for judging species relationships. Sulfate activation and transfer to lipids, polysaccharides, and aminoalkyl phenols have been studied In a variety of biological systems. The transfer of S³⁵O₄ from radioactive 3'-phosphoadenoslne 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS³⁵) into lipid-soluble material has been investigated in cell-free preparations of rat brain and liver. In brain of 10-20 day old rats activity was found in the particulate fraction of the homogenate, whereas in young adult rat liver activity resided in the supernatant fraction (105,000 x g). In both systems incorporation was stimulated by the addition of a crude mixture of the isomers of N-acetyl sphingosine. Evidence accumulated …

Simple invertebrate metazoa offer many potentialities for study of growth and differentiation - potentialities which have not been realized because the organisms usually have been difficult to handle in the laboratory. A simple coelenterate, the brackish-water colonial hydroid Cordylophora lacustris, was selected for the present work, and was domesticated so that it could be grown and manipulated under controlled laboratory conditions. Methods have been developed permitting exponential increase in hydranth number with a doubling time of about three days. Five ions — Na⁺, K⁺, Ca⁺⁺, Mg⁺⁺, Cl^- — have been found …

IN the year 1859, an enthusiastic sportsman in Victoria took delivery from the clipper "Lightning" of a small consignment of wild European rabbits which he joyfully released on his estate at Barwon Park, near Geelong, in order to assure himself of some rough shooting.

He was not the only rabbit importer on record—tame rabbits were brought into Australia before and after 1895 and doubtless there were other importations of the wild rabbit—but he is generally credited—or discredited—with having triggered off the rabbit plague.
