Comparative Anatomy And Biology Of Two Species Of The Asteroid Genus Pisaster, Norman William Mayer

Interest in the endemic Pisaster was first aroused by the great variation of external color in Pisaster ochraceus. This in turn led to observations of the diversity of the spinous patterns of this sea star. Following the suggestion of Dr. Jool D. hedgepeth it was decided to make an extensive comparison of the common species of Pisaster.

Detailed comparison between Pisaster brevispinus and Pisaster ochraceus have been made only by Fisher (1930) and Verrill (1914). Helminths of the shrew-mole from Oregon are described. They include a cestode Hymenolepis neurotrichi sp. n., a trematode Microphallus aspalacis sp. n., and the third-stage larva of an undetermined species of Porrocaecum (nematode), probably P. depressum (Zeder, 1800), or P. angusticolle (Molin, 1860). Preserved viscera of ten animals were examined. Three were infected.

The effect of 9α-FF on the Na:K ratio, chloride, and pH of saliva and gastric secretions, and on the total and free acid of gastric juice in normal human subjects was investigated. This study was designed to investigate whether conditions could be produced in the normal human subject similar to those present in patients with primary aldosteronism by using large doses of 9α-FF. August and others found a change in salivary electrolytes when cortisone, desoxycortisone, or ACTH were given to normal subjects. Waksman whose voluminous works have established many of the procedures used in microbial analyses of soil. The Lime Creek site is a stratified Early Lithic (Paleo-Indian) camp site buried in the Terrace-2A alluvial fill of a valley in the dissected loess plains. Geological correlations indicate an early Valders (Wisconsin- IV) date. A radiocarbon date (No. C-471) of 9524 B.P. from just below Lime Creek I, the lowest occupation zone, must be taken only as a minimal possible age for the site. The animal bones in Lime Creek I are primarily of pronghorn and beaver, whereas those in Lime Creek III, the highest occupation zone, are exclusively of bison. The two objectives of this study were to determine the kinds and numbers of rotifers in the plankton in a portion of the Kalamazoo River and to ascertain the effects of various chemical constituents of the river water on the rotifers.

The Kalamazoo River is located in southwestern Michigan and flows westward into Lake Michigan. The study was conducted along a section of the river extending from Comstock, Kalamazoo County, to Plainwell, Allegan County (Fig. 1). The urinary systems of Roccus saxatilis (Walbaum) and Roccus Americanus (Gmelin) were studied to check the validity of the monogeneric classification and to examine the osmoregulatory mechanism that allows the species to survive in environments of various salinities. The gross anatomy of the urinary systems of 13 R saxatilis and 12 R. americanus showed a number of similarities to exist, e.g. the general mesonephric form and size, uretal position and length, and the renal venous system. Pure cultures of Saprolegnia parasitica Coker were grown under varied conditions of temperature, pH, and light conditions. In liquid medium colonies were spherical with a zonal effect in the distribution of zoosporangia.

Near the limiting extremes of pH and temperature, beaded hyphal tips were found in place of normal sporangia. Teorell Universal buffer in the sporulation water inhibited production of sporangia. The pH minimum was 4.0 - 4.1, optimum 6.3 - 7.4, and maximum 8.o - 8.3. The maximum number of sporangia was produced at 15 C. Between 3.4 and 5 C , a delay in sporulation was noted and …

During the spring of 1941, Dr. C.L. Hayward, of the Brigham Young University zoology department, while on a field trip with his ecology class found some interesting planaria.ns at a place called Stewart's Flats on Mt. Timpanogos, Utah County, Utah. A fellow teacher, Dr. D. E. Beck, sent live specimens to Dr. L. H. Hyman of the American Museum of Natural History for identification. Although the specimens arrived in New York as a "putrid smelling soup,"1 the specimens, through correspondence, were thought to be Polycelis coronata (Girard), the same species Hyman collected in South Dakota during August 1929.

The basidiomycete flora of the Sandia Mountains has never really been investigated before. At best this survey can serve only as a rather spotty general sketch of fungi in the area. Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.

Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.

The development and description of a quantitative method of evaluating streptococcal antibodies by inhibition of fluorescent staining is reported. Suspensions of Streptococcus pyogenes group A, treated with methyl alcohol to reduce auto-fluorescence, were used as antigen. The degree of inhibition of uptake of fluorescent labeled antibody produced by the presence of antibodies in the immune test sera was measured after elution of the labeled antibody. Comparisons were made with controls using normal sera containing no inhibiting antibodies. A method of reporting the results in terms of titer is described.

Streptococcal antibodies were demonstrated quantitatively by this inhibition test in sera …
