Oyster Abundance In Apalachicola Bay, Florida In Relation To Biotic Associations Influenced By Salinity And Other Factors, R.W. Menzel, N.C. Hulings, R.R. Hathaway

From June 1955 through May 1957, stations on three oyster reefs were sampled quantitatively at intervals and all oysters and associated macroscopic organisms were recorded per unit area. Station I was a privately leased “natural” reef, consisting of higher places exposed at low water, with a salinity range of 22.7-36.6 o/oo and was fairly productive. Station II, depth ca. two meters, was the least saline, range 1.2-29.3 o/oo, and was considered very productive for natural reef. Station III, depth one meter, salinity range 7.5-35.7 o/oo, was depleted although there was an abundant spatfall.

Historical. General descriptions of intertidal zonation have been published by many workers for almost all littoral areas, both marine and lacustrine (Doty, 1957; Glynn, 1965; Hedgpeth, 1957; Lewis, 1964; Pennak, 1951). The fact that animal species of the sandy shore are few in number eliminates many complex interspecific reactions, while great numbers of individuals make population studies feasible. In addition to certain general works (Dahl, 1952; Pirrie et al., 1932; Yonge, 1950) a number of papers have discussed causative factors or mechanisms for animal zonation.

It is the purpose of this study to present a quantitative survey of the family Peridiniidae in Tomales Bay over the six month period between October thirtieth and May sixth. Emphasis has been placed on variation in the total Peridiniidae population for this period, on the seasonal variation of individual species, and on the possible effects of hydrographic and climatic conditions on the population.

The Symposium on Partridge was organized by the Forestry and Czechoslovak Game Management Research Institute and the Czechoslovak Hunting Union and held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in October 1965. The basic purpose of this work was to gain information on the possible role of some Rhode Island estuaries as nursery grounds for young migrant and resident species of fishes.

The areas selected were, the lower Pettaquamscutt River and the lower Point Judith Pond, both in the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island. The seining operations were carried through summer and early fall of 1962 when these estuaries are heavily used as nursery grounds. Several workers and several lines of evidence have shown that the shrimp life cycle is very short, probably about 15 to 16 months, for the very small fraction reaching the largest adult size. Additionally, a great deal of commercial fishing is carried out upon sub-adult populations within the bays and shallow Gulf. In fact most shrimp that are caught have never spawned. These shrimp grow up within one warm season and they are derived from larvae which make their way to inside waters from the offshore spawning areas. Tomales Bay is situated in Marin County, about 40 miles north-west of San Francisco. This shallow bay averages about 1.5 miles in width and is about 12.6 miles in length, with an average depth of 12 feet (Johnson, Bryant and Hedgpeth, 1961). Oyster and herring comprise the main fishing industry, although the bay contributes a great amount of perch, smelt, halibut, and shark. Gill and seine nets are the most common gear used by fishermen.

Diurnal Distribution Of Phytoplankton From A Single Station At The Mouth Of The James River, Harold G. Marshall

Eight sets of water samples were taken to a depth of 36 ft. during a 24-hr. period. A homogeneity was found in the vertical distribution of the total phytoplankton in samples from 7 of the 8 hydro-casts. Skeletonema costatum and Asterionella japonica were the most numerous phytoplankters in every sample, with the majority of their counts each exceeding 500, 000 cells per liter.

Recent intensified . interest in Protista has been motivated largely by simultaneous advances in development of precision equipment and of analytical techniques. The Protista serve well for biological investigation since they are easily obtained, grow well under artificial culture conditions, have a high reproductive potential , and thrive with a mini mum of care. In addition, Protista may be maintained as clonal cultures resulting in identical or nearly identical characteristics, since all organisms are progeny of the same progenitor. The advantages provided by such identical heredities are obvious.

Seasonal Tolerance Of Citellus Tridecemlineatus, Citellus Lateralis, And The Laboratory Rat To Deprivation Of Drinking Water, Gary L. Bintz

Season was investigated as a factor determining tolerance to deprivation of drinking water. Employing weight loss as a criterion, two hibernators, Citallus lateralis and C. tridecemlineatus, are more tolerant to water deprivation in any season than the laboratory rat, a non-hibernator. Both C. lateralis and C. tridecemlineatus are more tolerant to water deprivation and fall than in summer. In general, bold species demonstrate greater tolerance to water deprivation as ambient temperature decreases (in the range of 27 to 21 C ). Season appears to have no effect upon tolerance to water deprivation in the laboratory rat.

The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

An evaluation of the relationship between several measures of semen quality and fertility of bulls mated under natural conditions has been conducted over a three-year period. Semen was collected three different times with an electro-ejaculator from bulls used in the fertility tests. Collections were made at weekly intervals. Fertility was evaluated by mating bulls to heifers starting about three days after the last collection. Semen quality refers to the percent abnormals and the percent motility evaluated at the time of collection. Fertility was measured by the proportion of heifers that settled at natural service. Several multiple regression equations were calculated. …

Most marine pyrenomycetes are lignicolous, but some are epiphytic on marine phanerogims and algae. Meyers (1957) listed 30 species of algae known to be attacked by these fungi. A number of reports dealing with marine ascomycetes on algal hosts appeared before 1900, the most noteworthy being those of Winter (1887), and Jones (1898). Cotton (1908) described a pyrenomycete on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and summarized previous reports of ascomycetes found on algae. Reed (1902) collected two species, and Sutherland, in a series of papers (1914-1916), reported several alga-infesting pyrenomycetes. More recently, a number of ascomycetes occurring on algae have …

Geographic Variation Of The Deer-Mouse Peromyscus Maniculatus In New Mexico, Robert M. Hunt

Two subspecies of the deer-mouse Peromyscus manicluatus Wagner are presently recognized in New Mexico, P. M. rufinus Merriam and P. m. blandus Osgood. The present investigation supports the validity of these taxa.

A study of variation in 16 cranial and skin characters suggests that p. m. rufinus consists of a single interbreeding and relatively genetically uniform population in northern New Mexico but in southern New Mexico comprises isolated and genetically variable montane populations which seem to intergrade locally with a distinct lowland subspecies p. m. blandus, which occupies the desert plain of southern New Mexico.
