Germination And Early Development Of The Silky Prairie Clover, Richard B. Forbes Jan 1967

Germination And Early Development Of The Silky Prairie Clover, Richard B. Forbes

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Field and laboratory studies of the silky prairie clover (Petalostemon villosum Nutt.) in central Minnesota indicated that seeds of this plant require scarification but do not require an overwintering period, to germinate. Germination and primary root growth are rapid; shoot growth appears to be quite slow. Methods of associating shoot growth with age are suggested and several notes on the life history of the plant ore presented.

A Review Of The Bounty System As A Method Of Controlling Undesirable Animal Populations In Houston County, Minnesota (1883-1965), Robert E. Munkel, Calvin R. Fremling

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The bounty system has been in effect for 82 years in Houston County, Minnesota. Over $170,000 in bounties have been paid during that time for wolves, foxes, rattlesnakes, pocket gophers, striped gophers, woodchucks, and crows. Over 7,000 rattlesnakes have been bountied in a single year. A family of semi-professional bounty hunters collected 2,511 rattlesnakes in one year. With the possible exception of wolves, the bounty system has had little apparent effect in controlling animal populations in Houston County. Habitat change has been primarily responsible for the decrease in numbers of wolves and for the rapid increase in numbers of red …

Northern Pike Production In Phalen Pond, Minnesota, James E. Bryan Jan 1967

Northern Pike Production In Phalen Pond, Minnesota, James E. Bryan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In this study, certain physical, chemical and biological conditions were observed in order to relate them to the development and survival of eggs and young northern pike in a small pond. The spawning period lasted one week and was interrupted by unfavorable weather. Low temperature caused the eggs to develop at a rate slower than the rate other workers have shown to be normal. Many eggs between stages II and Ill appeared to be developing abnormally and were perhaps reacting to an unsuitable environmental condition. Since 90% of all eggs completed development, neither slow nor abnormal development increased the egg …

Some Aspects Of Apiculture In Minnesota, Carmen W. Harper, Charles F. Calkins Jan 1967

Some Aspects Of Apiculture In Minnesota, Carmen W. Harper, Charles F. Calkins

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The modest references to insects in geographic literature have been largely confined to those deriving notoriety as vectors of disease-producing organisms (e.g ., the tsetse fly and the anopheles mosquito). Among the beneficial insects, bees have been significant in man's organization of area for agricultural purposes for at least 4,000 years. The management of bees for the production of honey is a widely dispersed economic activity in the United States. Minnesota has been a leading state in honey production for many years. Minnesota's 1966 honey crop of 17,940,000 pounds was the third largest in the United States. Approximately 90,000 colonies …

Guinea pig brain cortex slices incubated in media containing U-C14 aspartic acid form glutamine of higher specific activity than glutamic acid (Fed. Proc. -25, 713 (1966) ). Glutamic acid and glutamine from such experiments were enzymatically decarboxylated and the o/o of label in C-1 ranged from 37 to 42o/o. These values exceed the maximum predicted from the known operation of the citric acid cycle viz. 33o/o. When l-C14 acetate was injected into mice or incubated with brain slices the aspartate isolated from brain had more than 50o/o of the label in C-4. From the known operation of the citric acid …

The determination of urinary 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol (HMPG), a major metabolite of epinephrine and norepinephrine by gas-liquid chromatography and electron capture detection is described. A purified extract of HMPG was treated with trifluoroacetic anhydride to form the highly sensitive HMPG-trifluoroacetate derivative. Chromatography was performed on a 6% QF-I- 0065 column at 158°. Recovery was found to be 55·4% using [3H]HMPG. Two sets of eight identical samples demonstrated a standard deviation from the mean of 6.9% and 5.7%. Thirty-five normal human urine specimens assayed by this procedure gave a mean HMPG excretion of 0.86 #gfmg creatinine (range 0.25-1.49). Six urine samples from …

Carbohydrate And Lipid Metabolism During Germination Of Uredospores Of Puccinia Graminis Tritici, J. M. Daly, H. W. Knoche, M. V. Wiese

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Uredospores of Puccinia gramintis (Pers.) tritici (Eriks. and Henn.) were uniformly labeled with 14C by permitting the host (Triticuml aestivum L.) to carry out photosynthesis in 14CO2 during the process of spore production by the obligate parasite. The use of 14C labeled spores provided advantages in a study of the utilization of endogenous substrates at frequent intervals with small amounts of spores under conditions conducive to germination.

Legume Inoculants For 1967, W A. Shipton Jan 1967

Legume Inoculants For 1967, W A. Shipton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PERIODIC changes are made in the strains of rhizobia released for the inoculation of various legume groups.

These changes are made when it is evident from experimental data that better strains of rhizobia are available, or that the old ones are no longer effective.

New strains of rhizobia may give improved nodulation of legume seedlings or increase dry matter yields.

Seventy-nine species and one subspecies are recognized. Sixteen names are relegated to synonymy, one to homonymy and eight are removed from the subgenus Callandrena. The thirty-nine species new to science are: aerifera, aeripes, afimbriata, ardis, auripes, balsamorhizae, beameri, bilimeki, bullata, calvata, dreisbachorum, fulminea, fulminoides, …

A Pharmacological Analysis Of The Ionic Channels Of Nerve, Bertil Hille Jan 1967

A Pharmacological Analysis Of The Ionic Channels Of Nerve, Bertil Hille

Student Theses and Dissertations

The effects of various drugs on single myelinated nerve fibers from Rana pipiens were studied with the voltage clamp technique of Frankenhaeuser and Dodge. The observed currents were analysed by a computer in terms of the mathematical model of Hodgkin and Huxley. The sodium, the potassium, and the leakage current components and the time constants associated with their changes were calculated. Tetrodotoxin abolished the sodium currents selectively, and tetraethylammonium ion abolished the potassium currents selectively. Neither of these drugs affected the time constants associated with any of the current components. The curves relating the kinetic parameters of the sodium currents …

Biochemical Studies Of The Purine Analogues, 2-Aminopurine And 2,6 Diaminopurine, Anthony Cerami Jan 1967

Biochemical Studies Of The Purine Analogues, 2-Aminopurine And 2,6 Diaminopurine, Anthony Cerami

Student Theses and Dissertations

An alternating copolymer of deoxy 2,6 diamino purine and thymine (dDAP-T) has been synthesized by substituting 2,6 diamino purine deoxyriboside triphosphate for dATP in a dAT primed synthesis with DNA polymerase. This polymer differs from dAT in having an amino group in the minor groove, and in several physical properties. For example, the additional amino group allows a third hydrogen bond of the Watson-Crick type to be formed with thymine, and the expected increase in the stability of the helix is reflected in a transition temperature (Tm) which is higher by 25°C. than that of dAT. Also, the buoyant density …

Inhibitory Fields In The Limulus Lateral Eye, Robert B. Barlow Jan 1967

Inhibitory Fields In The Limulus Lateral Eye, Robert B. Barlow

Student Theses and Dissertations

Spatial distribution of the inhibitory influences exerted by ommatidia in the Limulus lateral eye was measured. The source of inhibition was a small cluster of ommatidia illuminated through a flexible bundle of glass fibers ("fiber optics"). The inhibitory field of the cluster was determined by measuring the decrease it produced in the response frequency of surrounding ommatidia which were illuminated individually through single glass fibers. Applied directly to the corneal facets of the ommatidia, the single fibers provided unusually effective stimulation with a minimum of light scatter into adjacent receptors. The inhibitory field is elliptically shaped with its major axis …

Control Of Weeds In Garden Areas, Geoffrey A. Pearce Jan 1967

Control Of Weeds In Garden Areas, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE present-day gardener does not appear to relish the tedious job of removing weeds by hand. It is a never-ending task and no sooner is one germination controlled than another appears.

Modern herbicides provide a ready answer for overcoming the weed problem in the home garden, but it is essential to select the correct chemical and to understand its limitations.

Poison Plants Of Western Australia : The Toxic Species Of The Genera Gastrolobium And Oxylobium. 1. Characteristics Of The Group, T E H Aplin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE toxic species of the genera Gastrolobium and Oxylobium are a unique group of poison plants which have caused considerable economic loss to stock-raisers in Western Australia ever since the early days of settlement.

These plants are widely distributed over the agricultural areas of the south-west, and, with the opening up of large tracts of land for stock-raising, the danger is as high as it has even been.

The Control Of Doublegee, Geoffrey A. Pearce Jan 1967

The Control Of Doublegee, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOUR years ago no practical recommendations could be made for the control of doublegee.

With money provided by the State Wheat Research Fund, research has been undertaken into the control of this weed, and there is now no reason why most farmers cannot bring doublegee under control.
