Taxonomic Characters In The Genus Echinococcus (Cestoda: Taenlidae), Robert L. Rausch Jan 1968

Taxonomic Characters In The Genus Echinococcus (Cestoda: Taenlidae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Not more than four species of cestodes of the genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, are recognized as valid. The larval stage of at least three of them is able to develop in man, causing respective types of hydatid disease. Accurate characterization of these cestodes, including both larval and adult stages, is essential for identification, upon which depends development of methods for preventing infection of man and domestic animals. Because morphological characteristics of the larval cestodes may be modified according to the species of host in which they develop, identification should be based upon taxonomic characters of specimens from the respective natural …

Parasites, Predators, And Other Arthropods Associated With Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) On Juniperus Species In Kansas, E. A. Heinrichs, Hugh E. Thompson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

One parasitic dipterous species and 27 parasitic hymenopterous species were collected. Parasites were primarily collected by mass-rearing host larvae on cut host plant foliage in the laboratory or by rearing larvae on artificial diet. The tachinid Nemorilla pyste (Walk.) and five hymenopterous species, Glypta n. sp. (Ichneumonidae), Campoplex sp. (Ichneumonidae), Agathis acrobasidis (Cushman) (Braconidae), Elasmus atratus How. (Eulophidae), and Catolaccus aeneoviridis Girault (Pteromalidae), were definite parasites, and biological notes are given. Collection data are also given for the other 22 species.

One reduviid predator, Zelus socius Uhler, and six spiders were observed feeding on C. houstonana.

Reviews Of Glenn L. Hoffman (1967). Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes., John Paling

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

'This manual', the author explains, 'is intended to be an aid to the identification of the freshwater fish parasites of North America'. Judged by this objective, the book will be an invaluable source of reference for workers in this field. However as it does not set out to cover the ecology of fish parasites and furthermore as it concerns itself mainly with the American fauna, this book will probably have only a limited appeal to readers of this Journal.

Review Of Parasitology: Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Brother George Paul

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This book is intended to serve as a manual for aiding in the identification of the freshwater fish parasites of North America. To this end an extensive key is given for each of the biological groups that have a notable number of fish parasites. In addition to this, there are sections devoted to such topics as: procedures for examining fish for parasites, methods of preserving and preparing parasites for analysis, a check list of parasites of each species of fish, and an extensive bibliographical list of references.

Observations On The Stone Crab, Menippe Mercenaria Say, In The Vicinity Of Port Aransas, Texas, Earnest H. Powell Jr., Gordon Gunter

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Observations on the stone crab, Menippe mercenaria Say, were started on December 16, 1947. The purpose of these observations was to study the natural history and behavior of this crab, with special reference to its importance as an oyster predator. Plans called for some simple laboratory experimentation and monthly field observations. Although the regularity of the observations was interrupted for various reasons, some information gained which may interest workers is herewith presented.

Meristic And Morphometric Data On The Flatfish Citharichthys Gilberti From Panama, C.E. Dawson Jan 1968

Meristic And Morphometric Data On The Flatfish Citharichthys Gilberti From Panama, C.E. Dawson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Citharichthys gilberti Jenkins and Evermann, a common eastern Pacific flatfish, is known from Guaymas and Baja California, Mexico, south to Peru (Miller, 1966). It attains a total length of at least 260 mm (Meek and Hildebrand, 1928), frequently occurs on muddy bottoms and may enter rivers or other brackish water environments. Despite wide distribution there are apparently few literature references to the species and little is known of its life history or development. During a recent trip to the Pacific coast of Panama, C. gilberti was found to be the most abundant flatfish taken at a number of poisoned inshore …

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster Jan 1968

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Oxygen consumption can most readily be related to wet weight. However, the weight of a tadpole increases so long as it is feeding, then decreases during final non-feeding stages. Oxygen uptake may also be related to dry weight, but dry weight increases significantly from early tadpole stages to adult (Funkhouser and Mills, in press). There is change in one factor at the same time the change in the the other factor is in the opposite direction. Total nitrogen content may be used as an index of the metabolizing tissue, but is subject to the same criticism as dry weight (Moore, …

An Ecological Study Of Notoplana Acticola, A Polyclad Flatworm, In A Rocky Intertidal Habitat On The North Central California Coast, Alan Bradley Thum Jan 1968

An Ecological Study Of Notoplana Acticola, A Polyclad Flatworm, In A Rocky Intertidal Habitat On The North Central California Coast, Alan Bradley Thum

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxonomy of the polyclad flatworms is fairly well-known and some attention has been given to study of their physiology. Investigations of an ecological nature, however, are scarce; in fact, no ecological studies have been made on the Pacific Coast of North America. Else- where, Pearse and Wharton (1938) investigated the general ecology of Stylochus frontalis, associated with oysters on the coasts of Florida, and occasional notes have appeared, reporting on polyclads as predators on oysters and barnacles (Book, 1925: Wolke, 1954; Loosanoff, 1956: Skerman,1960)

Digenetic Trematodes From Embiotocid Fishes Of Tomales And Bodega Bays, California, Thomas David Rodella Jan 1968

Digenetic Trematodes From Embiotocid Fishes Of Tomales And Bodega Bays, California, Thomas David Rodella

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present paper deals solely with parasites of marine fishes of the family Enbiotocidae represented in the American Pacific according to Special Publications no. 2, American Fisheries Society, 1960, by 20 species, all of which are marine except the Tule perch, Hysterocarpus traski (Gibbons) from fresh water. In Tomales and Bodega Bays 174 fishes representing 9 embiotocid species were examined and found to harbor 6 species of digenetic trem todes, including one here in described as new.

Seasonal Gonadal Changes Of Adult Oviparous Oysters In Tomales Bay, Carl John Berg Jan 1968

Seasonal Gonadal Changes Of Adult Oviparous Oysters In Tomales Bay, Carl John Berg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two species of oviparous oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1790), the Eastern oyster, and Crassostrea gigas (Thunbert, 1793), the Japanese oyster, were introduced into Tomales Bay, California, for commercial purposes. Because these oysters do not propagate in Tomales Bay, new shipments of adult oysters or oyster spat must be periodically sent from the east coast of the United States or from Japan. It is the purpose of this study to compare the seasonal gonadal changes which occur in the two species of adult oysters in Tomales Bay with one another, and to compare them with the seasonal gonadal changes which occur …

Seasonal Gonadal Changes In Two Bivalve Mollusks In Tomales Bay, California, Vernon Kenneth Leonard Jan 1968

Seasonal Gonadal Changes In Two Bivalve Mollusks In Tomales Bay, California, Vernon Kenneth Leonard

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Pododesmus cepio Gray (1850), a bivalve mollusk of Family Anomiidae, is native to the Pacific coast of North America and common in Tomales Bay, California. A small population of the European oyster, Ostrea edulis Linnaeus (1758), is being raised experimentally at the Tomales Bay Oyster Company. The histological study of the seasonal gonadal changes of these two species, in Tomales Bay, is described below.

The study of gametogenesis in O. edulis in Tomales Bay is desired to evaluate the reproductive adaptation of this animal to a new set of ecological conditions. The inclusion of the native P. cepio in this …

A New Species Of Shrew (Genus Cryptotis) From Jalisco, Mexico (Mammalia: Insectivora), Hugh H. Genoways, Jerry R. Choate Dec 1967

A New Species Of Shrew (Genus Cryptotis) From Jalisco, Mexico (Mammalia: Insectivora), Hugh H. Genoways, Jerry R. Choate

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

From July 6 to 11, 1966, vertebrates were collected on Volcan de Fuego, Jalisco, for the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas, by Hugh H. Genoways and Percy L. Clifton. On July 10, a shrew of the genus Cryptotis was obtained on a steep slope across the valley to the north of the active cone of the volcano. The specimen was caught in a steel trap placed in the tunnel of a pocket gopher; because the opening had not been covered after the trap was set, it could not be determined whether the shrew was using the tunnel as …
