Waterfowl Ecology And Utilization Of Uinta Mountain Water Areas, Steven Roger Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Waterfowl utilization was recorded by observing study units at different elevations from the time water areas were thawed in the spring until they were frozen in the fall.

Sixteen species of waterfowl were observed in the Uinta Mountain; mallards, green-winged teal, pintails, and ring-necked ducks were breeders.

Ninety-eight percent of all waterfowl observed were below 10,000 feet.

Waterfowl numbers were highest during migratory periods and lowest in the breeding season.

Adult waterfowl were observed most often on natural water areas and beaver ponds greater than one acre.

Water areas at lower elevations had high indices of aquatic invertebrates and contained …

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid And Chilling On Nucleic Acids During Germination Of Dormant Peach Seed, Yuh-Nan Lin May 1968

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid And Chilling On Nucleic Acids During Germination Of Dormant Peach Seed, Yuh-Nan Lin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of nucleic acid changes influenced by gibberellic acid and chilling treatments in peach seed was performed in an attempt to reach a better understanding of the mechanism involved in breaking seed dormancy.

Gibberellic acid and the chilling treatment increased the RNA content. These two treatments which break dormancy also increased RNA, suggesting a similar mechanism involving RNA. Chilled seeds contained more RNA than did the gibberellic acid treated seeds.

DNA content remained unchanged regardless of treatment.

Dry seed had a greater ribonuclease activity than with soaked seeds. Enzyme changes did not correlate well with the RNA content in …

Temperature And Inoculum Density As Factors Affecting The Pathogenicity Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kühn On Radish, Paul E. Moser

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of temperature and inoculum density on the incidence of disease on radish caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn was studied. The fungus attacks radish at one or more stages during host development and causes pre- and pose-emergence damping-off, root rot, and storage-organ decay. The isolate of the fungus used in the study was obtained from infected radishes grown in Salt Lake County, Utah.

To determine the effect of temperature on the pathogenicity of R. solani on radish, soil temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30 C were used. Varying inoculum densities of 1360, 816, 408, 136, and 0 grams …

Factors Associated With The Penetration And Colonization Of Tomatoes By Verticillium Dahliae, Terry Dee Miller May 1968

Factors Associated With The Penetration And Colonization Of Tomatoes By Verticillium Dahliae, Terry Dee Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Experiments have demonstrated that Verticillium dahliae is capable of direct cortical penetration of roots and of subsequent distribution throughout plants of both resistant (Loran Blood) and susceptible (Meteor) varieties of tomato. Plants were inoculated by the root dip method and planted in sterile soil. After one week the fungus was isolated from the upper portions of both the susceptible and resistant varieties as indicated by growth petiole sections plated on PDA. The distribution of the fungus in the resistant plants was irregular, but in susceptible plants the fungus was isolated regularly from all petiole sections. In experiments using disposable growth …

A Biosystematic Study Of The Genus Aconitum (Ranunculaceae) In The Intermountain Region, Rex Cates May 1968

A Biosystematic Study Of The Genus Aconitum (Ranunculaceae) In The Intermountain Region, Rex Cates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study dealt with the Intermountain aconites of which the chromosome number of n = 8 was obtained.

The bumblebees, Bombus rufocinctus Cresson, B. appositus Cresson, and B. centralis Cresson, are the major pollinators of the allogamous and autogamous aconites.

Two-dimensional thin layer chromatography of cauline leaf extracts showed that the Intermountain aconites studied here consist of one chemical group.

The overall evidence indicates that the Intermountain aconites consist of one species, Aconitum columbianum Nutt., with two varieties, variety columbianum and variety ochroleucum A. Nels.

Effects Of Two Pathogenically Differing Isolates Of Verticillium Albo-Abrum On Tomato Growth, Leonidas Berry Camp May 1968

Effects Of Two Pathogenically Differing Isolates Of Verticillium Albo-Abrum On Tomato Growth, Leonidas Berry Camp

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study was performed using isolates of Verticillium albo-atrum which were reported as varying in their pathogenicities to a susceptible and resistant tomato variety. Also included as objectives in this undertaking were cross-protection and effects of spore density in the inoculum on the development and severity of Verticillium wilt of tomatoes.

After retesting the strains which were reported as pathogenic variants, results suggested that reported variabilities were non-existent in most of the isolates and instead there were only two pathogenic type-categories: (a) strains pathogenic to both resistant and susceptible tomato varieties; and (b) strains pathogenic only to the susceptible variety. …

Biosynthesis Of Piperidine-2-Carboxylic Acid In Fluoride-Necrotic Glycine Max, Susan S. Martin May 1968

Biosynthesis Of Piperidine-2-Carboxylic Acid In Fluoride-Necrotic Glycine Max, Susan S. Martin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Synthesis of piperidine-2-carboxylic acid (pipecolic acid) in soybean was studied by infiltration of radioactive carbon labeled precursor and by experiments using enzyme extracts from control and fluoride-fumigated plants.

Pipecolic acid was synthesized from lysine in both control and treated plants. Normal plants, in which pipecolic acid had not been detected by conventional procedures, were capable of synthesizing pipecolic acid. Greater pipecolic acid synthesis was shown in treated plants than in controls, and was attributed to increased enzyme concentration induced by fluoride treatment.

Urine pregnanediol excretion was in the pattern as investigated by other workers. The values rose in the latter half of the menstrual cycle, and fell prior to the onset …

Systemic Studies Of The Genus Gila (Cyprinidae) Of The Colorado River Basin, Paul Bernard Holden May 1968

Systemic Studies Of The Genus Gila (Cyprinidae) Of The Colorado River Basin, Paul Bernard Holden

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three Hundred and nine specimens of Gila from the Colorado River basin were studied. A form of numerical taxonomy, taximetrics, was used to help classify the specimens. The data from these fish indicate that many of the present hypotheses concerning their taxonomy are not valid. The concept of ecosubspecies or ecological subspecies does not fit the Colorado basin Gila. The roundtail and bonytail chubs, G. robusta Baird and Girard and G. elegans Baird and Girard respectively, currently treated as subspecies, are well separated morphologically, ecologically and reproductively and therefore are better considered two valid species. The relationship between G. …

Protein And The Pill- A Pivotal Partnership, B. Delworth Gardner Apr 1968

Protein And The Pill- A Pivotal Partnership, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Honor Lectures

Two fearsome possibilities preoccupy thoughtful men everywhere in the world. These worries are unique to our own age and time. Lord Russell puts it succinctly, "The world is faced, at the present day, with two antithetical dangers: (a) the human race may put an end to itself by a too lavish use of H bombs; and (b) the human population of our planet may increase to the point where only a starved and miserable existence is possible, except for a minority of powedul people."

Each of these dangers has its own characteristics, its own special perils, and its own possibilities …

The Pecan Casebearer, Acrobasis Caaryae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Mockernut Hickory, Carya Tomentosa, Elvis A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The presence of an A. caryae (Grote) larva in the terminal portion petiole apparently prevents the three terminal leaflets from developing normally. Larvae were present in the petioles from early spring until May 29. Four hymenopterous parasites were reared.

Seasonal Lipid Content Of Bagworm Larvae, E. A. Heinrichs Apr 1968

Seasonal Lipid Content Of Bagworm Larvae, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

It is common knowledge to many who have attempted to control bagworms Thyridopteryx sp., that early instars are fairly easy to control, while later larval stages are less susceptible to insecticides. Studies of other insects (Bennett and Thomas 1963, Munson and Gottlieb 1953, Munson et al. 1954, Reier et al. 1953) have shown that as the lipid content increases, the susceptibility to insecticides (especially chlorinated hydrocarbons) decreases. To determine whether the lipid content of the bagworm larva increased with age a series of lipid extractions was conducted.

Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck Mar 1968

Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Differences between daughter-dam and paternal sib estimates of heritability of first lactation milk yield have not been explained for New York data. Deviations of first lactation records from herdmate means of 155,070 artificially sired Holsteins were analyzed to examine the effect of unequal within group variances on the paternal sib estimate of heritability. The statistical model used to describe the data was yy = μ + si + eiy with σ 2yi = σ 2s + = σ2ei. Estimates of the within sire-group variances, σ1 2ei, were heterogeneous (P …
