Glyptostrobus Europaeus (Brongn.) Heer In Arkansas, Eugene B. Wittlake
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Glyptostrobus europaeus (Brongn.) Heer, a fossil gymnosperm is found at a few locations in central North America, in deposits of the Eocene. This work cites previously reported localities and reports a new site at Hooker, Arkansas. This deposit appears to be the most abundant for specimens of G. europaeus in the Eocene of North America. History of the Hooker site, characteristics of the living species G. pensilis (Abel) Koch and G. europaeus is presented. Worldwide distribution of both species through time, is discussed. Specimens of many parts of the life cycle of G. europaeus are recorded and illustrated.

Effect Of Domestic Effluent On Two Spring Surveys Of Fishes In Lost Creek, Craighead County, Arkansas, John K. Beadles
Effect Of Domestic Effluent On Two Spring Surveys Of Fishes In Lost Creek, Craighead County, Arkansas, John K. Beadles
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Lost Creek is representative of deltonic streams of the St. Francis Basin possessing characteristics of being turbid. It has a low flow velocity except during the annual spring rains. Lost Creek meanders approximately 18 km. before receiving effluents and empties into Big Creek approximately 4 km. west of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Five collecting stations were studied in 1966 while six stations were sampled in 1970. Some fishes have been found to tolerate moderate amounts of domestic effluents and it is probable that the two species Lepomis cyanellus and Ictalurus melas, collected within the effluents, were more resistant than the other species …

The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie
The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and intensity of blood parasites in the common crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The following observations on the protozoan genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma with observations on the nematode group microfilaria, are based entirely on materials collected at Auburn, Washington during the spring of 1970.
Despite the numerous studies on prevalence of blood parasites in various birds, there have been few attempts to study the relative incidence and intensity of haematozoa in blood and tissue smears taken from the common crow. So far as the author has been able to ascertain, …
An Annotated Check List Of The Land Mammals Of Curry County, Oregon, Paul Emerson Sherrell
An Annotated Check List Of The Land Mammals Of Curry County, Oregon, Paul Emerson Sherrell
All Master's Theses
Curry County merits study for several reasons. Very little work has been done on its mammalian fauna resulting in a limited number of specimens. In turn there is a sparsity of literature; that written is chiefly concerned with the genera Arborimus and Phenacomys. The location of the county places it in an area of scrambled geological history resulting in a diverse mixture of faunal and floral elements. Logging, agriculture, and grazing activities have altered and continue to alter the natural habitats. These interests have permanently changed both the floristic and faunistic composition of the county.
The aims of this study …

Progress In Research On Noxious Weeds, Geoffrey A. Pearce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RESEARCH on noxious weeds has enabled the development of many practical methods for the control of these weeds.
Where the recommended treatments have been accepted by farmers, large scale operations have reduced the areas infested and stopped spread into new paddocks.

Establishing Pastures Under Wheat Crops, M L. Poole, J. W. Gartrell, D. A. N. Nicholas
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RECENT surveys indicate that in the medium and high rainfall cereal and sheep areas as much as half the new pasture sown is sown with a crop.
In the drier wheatbelt areas the figure is 20 to 30 per cent.
Chemical Thinning Controls Biennial Bearing In Apples, J E L Cripps
Chemical Thinning Controls Biennial Bearing In Apples, J E L Cripps
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Department of Agriculture experiments have shown that biennial bearing of apples can be controlled by chemical thinning, but both winter and spring weather conditions must be taken into account when the need for spraying is assessed.
BIENNIAL BEARING is a regular cycle in which each heavy crop of fruit is followed by a light crop, or, in extreme cases, no crop at all.
Identification Of Seeds Of Undesirable Weeds, J R. Peirce
Identification Of Seeds Of Undesirable Weeds, J R. Peirce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
PREVENTING the introduction of weeds to a farm is a far cheaper proposition compared to the expensive and laborious process of eradicating a well established infestation.
Unfortunately most weeds establish themselves as plants before they are identified, the main reason being farmers are often unable to recognise weeds in the seed stage.

Urea Or Grain Supplements For Stubble?, H E. Fels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Three methods of supplementing sheep grazing stubble were compared at Merredin Research Station in 1970. The stubble used in the experiment was left after harvesting a nine-bushel crop of Gamenya wheat which was a weed-free second crop on new land. The land had never been sown to legumes.

Subalpine Cover Ecology Of Eutamias Amoenus, Eutamias Townsendii And Other Small Mammals In Huckleberry Park, Mount Rainier National Park, Don H. Meredith
All Master's Theses
Little work has been done on the ecology of alpine and subalpine small mammals. They are included in faunal surveys, but little is known of their habits. In the summer of 1969 this study was undertaken in subalpine Huckleberry Park, Mount Rainier National Park, to determine the species of small mammals in the area and some of their relationships with the environment and each other. The relationships between E. amoenus and E. townsendii were of special interest.
The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.
This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …
The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.
The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.
All Master's Theses
The prime motivating factor in the present study was the desire to show significant differences in radio-sensitivities within six strains of Trypanosoma avium. A seventh strain was later added for the last two irradiation treatments. Gross morphology and differences in growth curves associated with varying temperatures suggested that the strains being cultured were not the same. With these differences in mind, the strains were subjected to different dosage levels of gamma irradiation.

The Ciliary Currents Associated With Feeding, Digestion, And Sediment Removal In Adula (Botula) Falcata Gould 1851 (Bivalvia, Mytilidae), Peter Vaughn Fankboner
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Adula (Botula) falcata Gould (Soot-Ryen, 1955) lives commonly as a byssally attached rock borer in soft mudstone reefs at Bolinas and Moss Beach, California (Figure 1). Keen (1963) reports that Adula falcata has been collected from the intertidal to a depth of ten fathoms. Its distribution is from Coos Bay, Oregon, to Cape San Lucas, Lower California (Hertlein and Strong, 1946), and collection data indicate a range as far south as Peru (Soot-Ryen, 1955).
While is possesses the protective advantage of living cryptically, Adula falcata is subjected to an environmental stress not faced by epifaunal mytillids; namely, it must function …

The Making Of A New Pasture Variety, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
The Making Of A New Pasture Variety, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FARMERS who attend field days at Department of Agriculture research stations are reasonably familiar with the procedure for producing a new cereal variety. It involves a painstaking and tedious process of crossing, followed by many years of segregation, selection and testing for yield, disease resistance, and other characters.
Although there are many pitfalls, the procedure for the creation of a new cereal variety is at least fairly well systematised.
Until recently the making of a new pasture variety was far from a systematic undertaking.

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Many District Advisers have carried out trials on private farms to test the response to a variety of types of supplementary feeds. This report gives brief details of five such experiments carried out with urea supplements over the last five years. Table 1 summarises the details and results of these trials.
Urea Mixture Formulations, H E. Fels
Urea Mixture Formulations, H E. Fels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
This experiment was done once the experiment above (Urea or Grain Supplements for Stubble) had shown definite but uneconomic responses to a particular mixture of urea, molasses and minerals. The aim was to find whether the response depended on the content of various portions of the mixture, and whether the response to the "shotgun" lick could be explained by the presence of salt, sulphate or cobalt.

Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Fauna Within A Pond, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs
Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Fauna Within A Pond, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A Tennessee pond was sampled weekly from June 18 to August 20, 1968, to determine quantitative differences among benthic organisms in sampling depths and dates. Annelids (Oligochaeta), Chironomidae larvae, and Chaoboridae larvae were the dominant organisms collected. Preferred depths existed for each group of organisms. Chaoboridae and Chironomidae exhibited distinct seasonal variations in numbers, with the population decreasing throughout the summer. Chaoboridae were the most and Chironomidae the least numerous of the 3 groups.
Susceptibility Of The Sod Webworm Pediasia Trisecta To Biological Control Agents, E. A. Heinrichs, C. J. Southards
Susceptibility Of The Sod Webworm Pediasia Trisecta To Biological Control Agents, E. A. Heinrichs, C. J. Southards
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Homeowners in Tennessee have observed complete destruction of their lawns by the sod webworm a few months after applying an insecticide to control sod webworms or white grubs. The reason for this increase rather than a decrease in the webworm population is not perfectly understood. We believe, however, that the natural enemies of the webworm may be reduced to such low population levels that they exert very little control on the webworm. Thus, once the natural enemies are destroyed in a lawn, it may require several months or even years for them to increase to a population level necessary to …
Chiropteran Systematics, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
Chiropteran Systematics, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Provides an overview of the field of chiropteran systematics in a way that will introduce the non-chiropterologist to the subject. By way of example, we have alluded to several aspects of taxonomic research at different levels in the hierarchy. Recourse to the publications cited at the appropriate places in the text will amplify our remarks and provide a solid background in the current work of the discipline.
Basically, taxonomic characters are where the taxonomist finds them; some, but not all, will prove useful also in elucidating relationships and evolutionary descent of taxa. Much remains to be done in these areas, …
System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The purpose here is to suggest a method which will permit understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of contemporary representatives of the phylum Nematoda without fossils. It is not my intent to again offer a phylogeny for the Nematoda. To say that no real benefit or knowledge of phylogeny or evolution is possible without fossils is succumbing to apathy. One cannot deny or ignore that all systems, morphological, biological and chemical manifested in modern forms developed by evolutionary sequence. It is true that with a complete fossil record the rates of evolution and developmental pressures could be accurately evaluated. However, in …
