Seasonal Utilization Of Sago Pondweed By Waterfowl At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, Michael R. Sterling

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seasonal utilization of sago pondweed (Potamogeton pectinatus L.) by waterfowl was studied at Bear River Miqratory Bird Refuge by comparing amounts of sago production on a series of plots on Unit Four. One plot was available to carp and waterfowl; one only to carp; and one available to neither.

The cage used to eliminate carp and waterfowl use of a plot caused a significant increase in sago production. The increase was attributed to less turbidity and less wind and wave action within the cage.

Carp distribution was limited to deep-water portions of Unit Four, a small area, and …

A Study To Demonstrate The Immediate Destination Of An Embolus Formed In The Lumen Of A Peripheral Venous Catheter, Rosemarie Morikone Emori

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was designed to show the immediate destination of an embolus formed in the lumen of an intravenous catheter placed in a peripheral vessel. The hypothesis stated that clots injected into a peripheral vessel will lodge in the lungs. A subhypothesis was that the clot may lodge anywhere along the circulatory pathway.

Indications of need for the study as shown by the review of literature were the following: (1) the complications resulting from the frequent use of intravenous polyethylene catheters, (2) experimental studies that showed that clots were formed around intravenous catheters, (3) the evidence that intravenous catheters predispose …

Intercellular Migration Of Centrioles In The Germarium Of Drosophila Melanogaster. An Electron Microscopic Study, Anthony P. Mahowald, Joan M. Strassheim May 1970

Intercellular Migration Of Centrioles In The Germarium Of Drosophila Melanogaster. An Electron Microscopic Study, Anthony P. Mahowald, Joan M. Strassheim

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A cluster of centrioles has been found in the early Drosophila oocyte. Since the oocyte is connected to 15 nurse cells by a system of intercellular bridges or ring canals, the possibility that the cluster of centrioles arose in the germarium from an intercellular migration of centrioles from the nurse cells to the oocyte was analyzed in serial sections for the electron microscope. Initially, all of the 16 cells of the future egg chambers possess centrioles, which are located in a juxtanuclear position. At the time the 16 cell cluster becomes arranged in a lens-shaped layer laterally across the germarium, …

Theses and Dissertations

In this study 883 specimens of the woundfin minnow (Plagopterus argentissimus Cope) from the Virgin River in Utah, were weighed and measured. Ratios of body measurements to standard length, and gonad weight to total weight were calculated. From the gonad weight:total weight ratios it was determined that woundfins spawn during a period from April through June, and that the first significant gonad development is during the third year of life. Several body proportions such as, snout length, gape, upper jaw length and peduncle depth grew nearly isometrically. Growth of other body proportions was more or less allometric. Head length, body …

The Effects Of Formaldehyde On The Frequency Of Reversion Of The White-Ivory Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Ruth Ellen D. Wood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is an analysis of the effects of formaldehyde, a chemical which is both recombinogenic and mutagenic, on white-ivory (wi) a highly mutable allele of the white locus of Drosophila. Formaldehyde is shown to significantly increase the reversion frequency of wi. The results of this investigation differ from earlier observations in three respects: (1) there is a positive correlation between RNA (ribonucleic acid) concentration and reversion frequency in the presence of formaldehyde, but reversion does not appear to be totally RNA dependent; (2) female germ cells are more sensitive than those of the male; …

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart Apr 1970

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Before discussing parasitic bees, I will present a rough outline of the biology of "ordinary" or non-parasitic bees. The superfamily Apoidea (bees) includes perhaps 25,000 or 30,000 species divided into nine families by recent authorities (Stephen, Bohart, Torchio, 1969) . A common biological thread holding this vast assemblage together is the provision by adults of pollen and nectar for their young. Only in the honey bees (the genus Apis which includes four species) are the larvae fed primarily on a different substance (a secretion of the pharyngeal glands) , and even this is derived from pollen and honey eaten by …

Wheat And Feed Grains In The Great Plains And Northwest: Supply Response And Resource Use, G. A. Helmers, W. F. Lagrone Apr 1970

Wheat And Feed Grains In The Great Plains And Northwest: Supply Response And Resource Use, G. A. Helmers, W. F. Lagrone

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The basic objective of the research reported here is to estimate supply response with varying product prices for wheat and feed grains. Within a framework of representative farm income maximization, changing product price relationships lead to supply adjustments which are aggregated and expressed as normative supply functions. Another objective is to analyze the resource use and net returns with varying prices for wheat and feed grains. The analysis of resources considers changes in overall levels of resources demanded in response to changing wheat and feed grain prices. Similarly, the analysis of net returns examines differences in net returns in response …

Frass Production In Oak Forests In Southern Michigan, James L. Faulkner Apr 1970

Frass Production In Oak Forests In Southern Michigan, James L. Faulkner

Masters Theses

Production of frass (insect fecal material) was determined for five slightly different oak forest habitats in Allegan State Game Area, Allegan County, Michigan, for the 1968 growing season. Frass samples were collected on 30 or more 9X9 inch collecting surfaces in each of the study areas. It was found that 1.66 grams or 87.36 square inches of white oak leaf consumed was the equivalent of one gram of frass produced. This was determined from five muslin bags enclosing white oak branches and containing fifteen assorted insect larvae from four species believed to be responsible for most of the frass production …

The Response Of Kentucky Bluegrass Turf To Insecticidal Treatments, E. A. Heinrichs, Leonard C. Lehman, Lloyd M. Callahan, C. J. Southards, Ellis L. Matheny Apr 1970

The Response Of Kentucky Bluegrass Turf To Insecticidal Treatments, E. A. Heinrichs, Leonard C. Lehman, Lloyd M. Callahan, C. J. Southards, Ellis L. Matheny

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The most common insect pests of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) in Tennessee are sod webworms and white grubs. Attempts to control these insects with insecticides has, at times, resulted in the entire destruction of the lawn by sod webworms. Pass (1965) has shown that applications of aldrin, chlordane, and dieldrin increased the webworm population 2-3 fold. Streu and Vasvary (1966) found the same phenomenon in chinch bug control. Both Pass and Streu believed that this population increase of the target pest may have been related to an interference in some population-limiting mechanism, such as the natural enemies, but …
