Mites And Lice Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Dorald M. Allred Oct 1970

Mites And Lice Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Dorald M. Allred

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Mites of 47 species and lice of 16 species were taken from reptiles of 3 species, birds of 23 species, and mammals of 18 species at the National Reactor Testing Station between June, 1966, and September, 1967. Mammals differed in degree of infestation relative to their geographic distribution at the station. The number of species of ectoparasites which occurred on a particular kind of host generally was in direct proportion to the number of hosts examined, but exceptions occurred in some instances. In some cases the rate of infestation differed relative to the sex of the host. The greatest numbers …

Increase In Size Of Eimeria Separata Oocysts During Patency, Donald W. Duszynski Oct 1970

Increase In Size Of Eimeria Separata Oocysts During Patency, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Examinations of 18 consecutive fecal samples collected at 6-hr intervals from infected rats showed that oocysts increased in length and width by approximately 40% from the beginning to the end of the patent period. Unsporulated oocysts were first observed in the 3rd fecal collection, 84 to 90 hr post-inoculation (PI) and 100 of these measured 9.9 to 14.3 by 8.8 to 12.1 μ (mean 11.7 by 10.1). Patency ended with the 15th fecal collection, 156 to 162 hr PI, and 100 unsporulated oocysts from this sample measured 14.3 to 17.6 by 13.2 to 15.4 μ (mean 16.3 by 14.2). Despite …

Variations In The Electrophoretic Mobility Of Purified Staphylocoagulase, John Elliott Hill Sep 1970

Variations In The Electrophoretic Mobility Of Purified Staphylocoagulase, John Elliott Hill

Biology ETDs

Coagulase production was investigated for 23 strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The coagulase from seven of these strains was purified and subjected to electrophoresis.

The dialyzable fraction of heart infusion broth was the growth medium. Coagulase was harvested from 5 hr shake cultures incubated at 37 c.

A series of dialysis steps lasting 24 hr at a temperature of 2 C were used to purify the different coagulases. The crude coagulase was first separated from the growth medium by dialysis against deionized water. The coagulase was next precipitated by dialysis against a £H 3.8 acetate buffer which had an ionic strength …

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling Sep 1970

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling

Biology ETDs

Timing and pattern of molts were studied in two species of Southwestern thrashers, Toxostoma curvirostre and T. bendirei. Emphasis was placed upon description of the sequence of feather replacement. Adults of both species undergo a complete molt (the prebasic) following the breeding season. The pattern of molt is essentially the same in both species. However, the migratory T. bendirei completes the molt approximately one month earlier than T. curvirostre, which remains on or near the breeding grounds throughout the year. The molts of young birds of both species are also similar in pattern. A major difference is the telescoping of …

Natural History Of The Avian Families Dendrocolaptidae (Woodhewers) And Furnariiae (Ovenbirds), J. Alan Feduccia Sep 1970

Natural History Of The Avian Families Dendrocolaptidae (Woodhewers) And Furnariiae (Ovenbirds), J. Alan Feduccia

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

During my investigations of the evolution of the woodhewers and ovenbirds I attempted to gather together data on the natural history of the groups and synthesize it into a meaningful form. In this summary I have stressed habitat, food, foraging behavior, and nidification. Although it should be realized that the present generic limits (Peters, 1951) are at best tentative, I thought it best to summarize the natural history according to the present classification. As most of the future changes in the classification of these groups will very likely involve lumping of genera, the information contained herein should remain separable to …

A New Shorebird From The Upper Pliocene, J. Alan Feduccia Sep 1970

A New Shorebird From The Upper Pliocene, J. Alan Feduccia

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

One of the avian fossils recovered from the Saw Rock Canyon local fauna of the Upper Pliocene of Seward County, Kansas, is the humerus of a scolopacine shorebird which closely resembles the Recent Tringa solitaria. Present evidence favors a late Hemphillian age for the fauna (Hibbard, 1964. Pap. Michigan Acad. Sci., Arts, and Letters, 49: 115-127), and the fauna is taken from a lower section of the Rexroad formation than are the Fox Canyon and Rexroad local faunas of the Rexroad formation of Meade County, Kansas. Many of the mammals in the Saw Rock Canyon local fauna are considered to …

Evidences Of Diurnal Feeding Activity In Trichoptera Larvae, John O. Mecom Sep 1970

Evidences Of Diurnal Feeding Activity In Trichoptera Larvae, John O. Mecom

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The literature of the aquatic insect order Trichoptera (caddisflies) is extensive. Ross (1944), Denning (1950a, 1950b, 1954, 1956), Banks (1944) and Betten (1934), among others, have been major contributors to the taxonomy and zoogeography of North American species. Important studies of the general ecology of both adult and larval forms have been made by Lloyd (1921), Scott (1958), and Hynes (1961) but Mecom and Cummins (1964) have commented on the limited knowledge of the trophic relationships of Trichoptera. Hanna (1957), Jones (1950), Chapman and Demory (1963) studied the food ingested by Trichoptera larvae, but except for the very limited experiments …

Dialysis Studies Of The K+ Binding Capacity Of Physarum Polycephalum, Claude Nations Sep 1970

Dialysis Studies Of The K+ Binding Capacity Of Physarum Polycephalum, Claude Nations

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Anderson (1964) has observed that migrating plasmodia of the slime mold, Physarum polycephalum, maintain a higher concentration of K+ in the region of the advancing front than in the posterior trailing region. He has also found that most of the Na- but little of the K+ in the posterior region can be removed by flushing water over the organism. Previous work by Anderson (1962) had revealed that alcohol precipitates prepared from plasmodial homogenates contain considerable quantities of K- which cannot be removed by washing. Based on these discoveries he has suggested that K+, but not Na+ is closely associated with …

Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman Sep 1970

Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Although botanists have been actively collecting in Utah for well over a century, the distribution of many plants are as yet imperfectly known. This is, in part, due to the scattered nature of Utah herbarium material. Also the terrain of the state has impeded collection in more rugged and remote areas. The present study gathers together the data from the major collections of native Utah trees and clarifies our present understanding of tree distributions in the state. The older collection records have been extensively supplemented by the field work of the author and other botanists.

The great diversity of environments …

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering Sep 1970

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering

Special Reports

Overbreeding has created a surplus of nearly 50 million dogs and cats. These animals are unwanted and homeless. Some of them--the lucky ones--will get a quick, merciful death at humane society shelters. Most, however, haven't even the hope of being reached and protected from suffering in the 3,000 or more communities without humane societies. Instead, they roam the country--starving, thirsting, suffering from disease and injury.

This is suffering on a massive scale. Many factors contribute to it. Commercial interests like pet shops, for example, are partly to blame in suggesting there is money in breeding puppies and kittens. Veterinarians who …

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone Ii. Interaction With Other Hormones, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow Sep 1970

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone Ii. Interaction With Other Hormones, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. GH enhances the release of insulin. A shift in adrenal steroid …

Health Nurse Clinician: An Extended Role For The Professional Nurse, C. E. Rupe, Diana Downs, Diane L. Kerr, William W. Hardy Sep 1970

Health Nurse Clinician: An Extended Role For The Professional Nurse, C. E. Rupe, Diana Downs, Diane L. Kerr, William W. Hardy

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A program to upgrade the level of nursing involvement in patient care has been established in conjunction with Wayne Slate University. Offered as a possible solution to the shortage of health care personnel, the master's degree program would result in an upward movement of medical personnel and provide more continuity of care to the patient. More specifically, the trained Health Nurse Clinician would be able to provide better nursing care because of the nurse's greater awareness of the patient's health problem. She (or he) could also free the physician from some of the time-consuming aspects of routine physical examination without …

Fine Structure Of The Fibrillar Flight Muscles In The Housefly, Musca Domestica (Diptera), R. S. Sohal, V. F. Allison Sep 1970

Fine Structure Of The Fibrillar Flight Muscles In The Housefly, Musca Domestica (Diptera), R. S. Sohal, V. F. Allison

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Insects of the orders Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera have developed an asynchronous flight mechanism. The frequency of the muscle contraction is not directly related to the rate of nervous stimulation (Pringle 1965). An initial nervous stimulus produces an active state in the flight muscle during which a variable number of oscillatory contractions take place. Consequently, insects like the house-fly can maintain a very high frequency of wing beat (180-200 per second). Asynchronous flight muscles differ from the vertebrate skeletal muscles and insect synchronous flight muscles; in the latter each nerve impulse produces a single contraction of the innervated fibres. …

Adrenal Corticosteroidogenesis And Hypothyroidsm: Effect Of Long-Term Treatment With P-Aminobenzoic Acid, John L. Mccarthy, Linda W. Laury Sep 1970

Adrenal Corticosteroidogenesis And Hypothyroidsm: Effect Of Long-Term Treatment With P-Aminobenzoic Acid, John L. Mccarthy, Linda W. Laury

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The relationship between induced hypothyroidism and adrenal involution has been studied by a variety of approaches in an attempt to elucidate the physiological basis between the events. McCarthy et al. (1959) reported on an investigation of feeding several antithyroidal agents to rats to study adrenal gland involution. While adrenal involution did occur following treatment with several of the goitrogens, only in one case was there a difference in peripheral plasma adrenal corticoid levels. In rats fed p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for 12 weeks, peripheral levels of corticosterone (B) decreased and levels of a Porter-Silber positive chromogen increased markedly. Work from the …

The Systematic Position Of The Avian Species Metopothrix Aurantiacus, J. Alan Feduccia Sep 1970

The Systematic Position Of The Avian Species Metopothrix Aurantiacus, J. Alan Feduccia

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The Orange-fronted Softtail, Metopotlzrix aurantiacus, now known to occur in the upper Amazon in southeastern Colombia, eastern Equador, eastern Peru, western Brazil, and northeastern Bolivia (Peters, 1951: 115) was described by Sclater and Salvin (1866: 190-191), who placed it in the Pipridae. Sclater (1888: 292) retained Metopothrix in the Pipridae without comment, placing it between Masius and Pipra. Berlepsch (1903: 108), in reviewing the systemic position of the genus stated that "this bird is not a Piprine [sic] form, as was believed by its describers, but a Dendrocolaptine [sic], closely allied to Xenerpestes, and agreeing with it in general characters …

Morphological Variation In Cephalogonimus Americanus (Trematoda: Cephalogonimidae) From Amphibians In Colorado, John E. Ubelaker, John D. Kimbrough Sep 1970

Morphological Variation In Cephalogonimus Americanus (Trematoda: Cephalogonimidae) From Amphibians In Colorado, John E. Ubelaker, John D. Kimbrough

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

A collection of western toads, Bufo boreas Baird and Girard, 1852, and neotenic tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum (Green) from Sheep Lake, Horseshoe Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, were examined for helminths in the spring of 1966. Oswaldo-Cruzia subauricularis (Rudolphi, 1819) was found in Bufo boreas and Ophiotaenia filarioides (LaRue, 1909) in Ambystoma tigrinum. In addition, both hosts harbored Spironoura pretiosa Ingles, 1936, Phylloclistomum bufonis Frandsen, 1957 and Cephalogonimus americanus. The last species differed greatly in appearance in the two hosts and these differences are reported herein.

Fine Structure Of Nucleoli In Cells Of Encysted Hymenolepis Diminuta, John E. Ubelaker Sep 1970

Fine Structure Of Nucleoli In Cells Of Encysted Hymenolepis Diminuta, John E. Ubelaker

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Studies of the fine structure of 5 day old cysticercoids of H. diminuta revealed nucleoli with well-formed lamellae in germinal cells within the body of the encysted worm. The nucleoli were located centrally in the nucleus and appeared not to be attached to the chromosomes, chromatin, or to the nuclear envelope.

The ferns of this flora are representative of an older Jurassic-Wealden vegetational type, whereas the angiosperms are typical of the modern vegetational type. Species of Gleichenia and Matonidium and Astralopteris coloradica represent the dominant forms in this flora. The Westwater flora contains fourteen genera including nineteen species and one variety. New species described from this flora include Asplenium dakotensis, Coniopteris westwaterensis and Ilex serrata.

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes Aug 1970

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

A balance of iodine within the rats is important for the maintenance of normal thyroid function. Because of Hymenolepis d[imi]nuta's affinity for certain nutrients, it may upset norma[l] iodine balance in the rat. To determine this, tapeworm-infected and non-infected rats were given 125Iodide orally and the percent uptake of iodide by the thyroid and the amount of radioac[tiv]ity in the tapeworms was determined. The percent distribution of the radio-iodinated compounds in the thyroid, tapeworms and feces was also determined. These procedures were repeated except 125Thyroxine was administered orally. There was a decrease in percent iod[id]e uptake by thyroids of tapeworm-infected …

Comparisons Of The Antigenic Relationships Of Pollen Extracts From Ambrosia Artemisaefolia, Ambrosia Elatior, Ambrosia Psilostachya And Ambrosia Trifida, James W. Meares Aug 1970

Comparisons Of The Antigenic Relationships Of Pollen Extracts From Ambrosia Artemisaefolia, Ambrosia Elatior, Ambrosia Psilostachya And Ambrosia Trifida, James W. Meares

Biology ETDs

The antigenic relationships of Ambrosia artemisaefolia, Ambrosia elatior, Ambrosia psilostachya, and Ambrosia trifida were studied using the techniques of gel diffusion and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Ten gram samples of defatted pollen were extracted for 7 2 hours with Coca's solution.

Each pollen extract was standardized on the basis of total nitrogen content per ml of extract using the Kjeldahl method. Antisera were prepared by injections of the pollen extract in Freund' s complete adjuvant. Rabbits were immunized subcutaneously against each pollen extract and antisera were collected five to six weeks after immunization. Gel diffusion analysis was performed by first pouring …

Asexual Reproduction In Planaria Characteristics Of The Inhibitor(S), Linda Gail Sheffield Aug 1970

Asexual Reproduction In Planaria Characteristics Of The Inhibitor(S), Linda Gail Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the postulated fission-inhibiting substance located in the cephalic region of Dugesia dorotocephala. Rearing decapitated planaria in four different concentrations (25, 50, 75 or 100 ug/ml) of head or whole body extract resulted in a positive correlation between the inhibition of fission rate and the concentration of extract. The difference in inhibitory activity between the two types of extracts was three percent at maximum. The inhibitory substance was partially inactivated at 60° C. There was a direct correlation between the length of time that the extract was heated and the inactivation of inhibitor. The active substance …
