Investigations Of Biochemical Relationships In New Mexico Ribes (Saxifragaceae), John G. Mexal Jun 1971

Investigations Of Biochemical Relationships In New Mexico Ribes (Saxifragaceae), John G. Mexal

Biology ETDs

The classification of Ribes based on morphological characters is hampered by interspecific similarities. Nine species found in New Mexico were studied chemotaxonomically on the basis of flavonoid variability and content. A soxhlet extraction apparatus was used to extract the flavonoids. Methanolic extracts of both fresh and preserved leaves were studied using thin-layer chromatography. The results supported the current subgeneric breakdown of Ribes into Ribesia and Grossularia. Ribesia contains between two and four anthocyanins, while Grossularia contains no detectable anthocyanins. Evidence presented in this paper indicates that R. aureum Pursh (Ribesia) and R. inerme Rydb. (Grossularia) are misplaced subgenerically. Biochemically, at …

Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan Jun 1971

Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan

Dissertations and Theses

Amino acid absorption across rat intestine in vitro was inhibited or stimulated by insulin depending on the hormone serosal concentration.

The absence of sodium ions from the incubating solution resulted in a significant decrease of L-alanine absorption. However, L-alanine was enhanced in a sodium-free medium by the addition of insulin on the serosal side of the intestine.

A sizable decrease in L-alanine and L-lysine absorption was produced by introduction of D-glucose (0.2 % and 2 %) in the Krebs-Ringer's incubating buffer. Nevertheless, the presence of D-glucose did not prevent the stimulatory effect of insulin on amino acid absorption.

The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy Jun 1971

The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Examination of the complete musculature of Sceloporus clarki clarki Baird and Girard and seven other species of Sceloporus revealed variation among species of Sceloporus and between Sceloporus and other iguanid lizards. The muscles in which the greatest variation was found were the intermandibularis group, the constrictor colli, the episterno-cleido-mastoideus, the episternohyoideus, the coracoid head of the triceps, the costocoracoid and the flexor tibialis externus. This study indicates: (1) Sceloporus is more closely allied to Crotaphytus than to the ground-dwelling iguanines; (2) the possibility of the basal stock of Sceloporus being arboreal, and (3) Sceloporus is a genus in the process …

Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis Jun 1971

Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The urinary output of uric acid from the purebred Dalmatian is similar in amount to that in man. Also, this breed of dog has a higher plasma uric acid level than other dogs and, like man, this hyperuricemia is accompanied more frequently with renal and bladder lithiasis. Allopurinol is effective therapy in both man and dog. Study of the fate of uric acid in the Dalmatian shows that the liver does not oxidize the available uric acid completely although it is capable of doing so when liver homogenates are studied. Consequently, the hepatic cellular membrane appears impermeable, or partially so, …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale Jun 1971

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva Jun 1971

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.

Induction Of Cytokinin-Independent Tobacco Tissues By Substituted Fluorenes, Thomas W. Bednar, Elfriede M. Linsmaier-Bednar Jun 1971

Induction Of Cytokinin-Independent Tobacco Tissues By Substituted Fluorenes, Thomas W. Bednar, Elfriede M. Linsmaier-Bednar

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Two morphactins and three aminofluorenes initiated the formation of compact tissue nodules in hormone-dependent tobacco callus cultures. These nodules, upon subculture, behaved like partially transformed plant tumors. They grew on cytokinin-free media, while control callus and nonnodule tissue still required an exogenous cytokinin source. The data indicate that substituted fluorenes, including carcinogenic aminofluorenes, can cause a neoplastic growth response in cultured tobacco tissues. Of particular interest in this study is the finding that a directed and heritable cellular change is induced in tobacco tissue in which a specific (the endogenous cytokinin) biosynthetic system is regularly and persistently activated.

Evaporative Water Loss In Two Northwest Snakes: Pituophis Catenifer And Crotalus Viridis, Donald R. Woolery Jun 1971

Evaporative Water Loss In Two Northwest Snakes: Pituophis Catenifer And Crotalus Viridis, Donald R. Woolery

All Master's Theses

A study by Gans, Krakauer and Paganelli (1968) dealt with twenty-six species of snakes representing five families. They found that the "rate of water loss was proportional to surface area" and that water loss correlates with the aridity of the selected habitat. No comparative information resulting from the direct separation of the pulmonary and cutaneous avenues of water loss is currently available. Also, no direct comparisons of this separation in sympatric species are available. These comparisons are the basis for this study.

Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda Jun 1971

Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

The principal results are listed below.

  1. Primarily inhibitory responses are obtained from both right and left connective stimulation, with some evidence for …

Systematics Of Southern Banner-Tailed Kangaroo Rats Of The Dipodomys Phillipsii Group, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr. May 1971

Systematics Of Southern Banner-Tailed Kangaroo Rats Of The Dipodomys Phillipsii Group, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Both nongeographic and geographic variation was assessed in southern banner-tailed kangaroo rats of the nominal species Dipodomys phillipsii and D. ornatus . Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed in consideration of geographic variation. D. ornatus is arranged as a subspecies of D. phillipsii, in which four races (phillipsii, ornatus, perotensis, and oaxacae) are recognized. Some observations on natural history also are included.

Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan May 1971

Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan

Dissertations and Theses

The specific identification of a megalurous cercaria found in the snail Oxytrema plicifera was accomplished by completing the life cycle in the laboratory. This species is compared with the eastern Philophthalmus megalurus and P. gralli with which it was once confused. The eggs, miracidia, and rediae of the Oregon species were found to be similar to those of the above species. The body and organ sizes and sucker ratios for the cercariae and adult stages obviously indicate that the Oregon species is Philophthalmus megalurus.

The Effect Of Antibiotics On Thermophilic Blue-Green Algae, Erleen Blanche Christenson May 1971

The Effect Of Antibiotics On Thermophilic Blue-Green Algae, Erleen Blanche Christenson

Dissertations and Theses

The nature of the action of penicillin on the cell walls of bacteria is reviewed. The composition of bacterial cell walls is compared to cell walls of blue-green algae.

The test organisms used were thermophilic: Anacystis nidulans grew optimally at 35⁰C, whereas Synechococcus lividus grew best at 45⁰ C. Growth was recorded by reading optical densities.

Cells of these two thermophilic blue-green algae were treated with varying dosages of penicillin and streptomycin. Penicillin inhibited growth of Anacystis nidulans and Synechococcus lividus in concentrations of 3.0 µg/ml and 0.03 µg/ml respectively. However, when 0.3 µg/ml of penicillin was added to Anacystis …

The Response Of The Peripheral Blood Lymphocyte Of The Beagle Dog To Inhaled 90 [Gamma] Fused Clay And To Acute In-Vivo And In-Vitro 60 Co Exposure, Charles H. Hewitt Jr. May 1971

The Response Of The Peripheral Blood Lymphocyte Of The Beagle Dog To Inhaled 90 [Gamma] Fused Clay And To Acute In-Vivo And In-Vitro 60 Co Exposure, Charles H. Hewitt Jr.

Biology ETDs

The cytogenetic response of Beagle dog peripheral blood lymphocytes to inhaled insoluble yttrium-90 in fused clay was characterized and compared to that produced by whole-blood and whole-body irradiation with cobalt-60. Compartmental models were developed with digital and analog computers to define canine lymphocyte kinetics. From these data, the dose to the peripheral blood lymphocytes by 90y fused clay was estimated. Blood lymphocytes were cultured with phytohemagglutinin and incubated for 72 hr. Metaphase chromosomes were collected with colchicine. No significant chromosomal damage was observed to result from initial lung burdens less than 4. 8 mCi of 90y fused clay. Whole blood …

The Effects Of Rickettsial Parasitism On Glucose Metabolism In The Chicken Embryo, Royce M. Brockett May 1971

The Effects Of Rickettsial Parasitism On Glucose Metabolism In The Chicken Embryo, Royce M. Brockett

Biology ETDs

The effects of Rickettsia typhi, Rickettsia rickettsii, and Coxiella burnetii infections on glucose metabolism in the chicken embryo were investigated. Cell-free extracts were prepared from infected and uninfected embryos and incubated with glucose-1-14C, glucose-6-14C, or gluconate- 6-14C. The results indicated that in typhus infected embryos a slight shift in glucose metabolism toward greater utilization of the hexose monophosphate pathway took place. Preliminary data obtained from Rocky Mountain spotted fever infected embryos suggested that infection with this organism has similar effect. Results obtained for Q fever infected embryos were not conclusive, but indicated that Q …

A Survey Of The Airborne Fungi In The Albuquerque, New Mexico Area, Mark S. Sifuentes

Biology ETDs

A twelve-month survey of the atmospheric airborne fungal spores, utilizing quantitative air sampling combined with the culture-plate technique, was conducted in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. Two permanent locations, one in the Heights and the other in the Valley, were used to compare spore types and incidence. The predominant genera caught in the Heights, in order of their frequency, were Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Mycelia Sterilia, Penicillium, Phoma, and Stemplylium. The predominant genera caught in the Valley, in order of their frequency, were Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Mycelia Sterilia, Phoma, Penicillium, and Stemplylium. Variations in number of predominating fungal spores of the …

Survey Of 36 Staphylococcus Aureus Strains For Possible Production Of A Coagulase-Destroying Factor, Roger L. Gardner May 1971

Survey Of 36 Staphylococcus Aureus Strains For Possible Production Of A Coagulase-Destroying Factor, Roger L. Gardner

Biology ETDs

The possible production of a coagulase-destroying factor (CDF) by 36 strains of Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. Some related characteristics of coagulases produced by these strains were also studied.

Coagulase used for these experiments was prepared by removing cells from the broth of 5-hour cultures. Preparations assayed for CDF activity were made from cell-free 72-hour culture broth. Inactivation was assayed by observing changes in clotting times of 5-hour broth that was diluted with an equal volume of 72-hour broth. Clotting times were determined at intervals during a 72-hour incubation period. These tests failed to show CDF activity from any of the …

The Interspecific Relationship Between Panagrellus Redivivoides And Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert Thomas Morgan May 1971

The Interspecific Relationship Between Panagrellus Redivivoides And Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert Thomas Morgan

Biology ETDs

Panagrellus redivivoides (T. Goodey, 1943) T. Goodey, 1945 was found associated with the "Albuquerque-wild" strain of Drosophila melanogaster. The nematode species was redescribed, noting differences from published description in body length, postvulval sac structure, and distal bifurcation of the gubernaculum. The nematode-fly association was maintained by periodic fly subculturing. However, the nematodes are nonparasitic and can be sustained independently of the flies, without statistically significant differences in body measurements, at 22 Con standard cornmeal-agar medium seeded with live yeast which serves as food for the microbivorous nematodes. Statistically significant differences in body measurements were noted with nematodes feeding on excess …

Observation Of A Compensatory Mechanism In The Rat During Carbon Tetrachloride Exposure, Mable H. Orndorff May 1971

Observation Of A Compensatory Mechanism In The Rat During Carbon Tetrachloride Exposure, Mable H. Orndorff

Biology ETDs

Physical, chemical, and physiological responses of rats, after carbon tetrachloride inhalation (400 ppm) and comparable injection exposure, are presented and discussed. Data collected during the last four of five biweekly exposures illustrate some of the acute effects of CC14 exposure superimposed on a pattern of chronic response. Fat deposition is increased as indicated by the rapid and substantial weight gains through the fourth exposure week. Final liver-body weight ratios are high in the CC14 - treated animals. The experimental rats excrete more urea after week 3, whereas they have stable creatinine excretion until the fifth week. Urea-creatinine ratios …
