Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Geomylichus geomydis n. sp. is an obligate ectoparasite and associated with it on Geomys b. bursarius were large numbers of four other major ectoparasite species and small numbers of eight miscellaneous acarine taxa. Descriptions and measurements of life cycle stages of Geomylichus geomydis n. sp. are given. Geographical and host distribution records are also included. Seasonal population numbers of Geomylichus geomydis n. sp. and the other four major ectoparasite species were analyzed. Infestation rates for G. geomydis n. sp. were determined for seasons of the year and sexes and ages of the host. A least-squares analysis of variance was used …
Simulation Of The Daily Growth Of An Aspen Population From The Measured Co2-Exchange Rates Of The Components, G.C. Bate, D.T. Canvin
Simulation Of The Daily Growth Of An Aspen Population From The Measured Co2-Exchange Rates Of The Components, G.C. Bate, D.T. Canvin
Aspen Bibliography
The daily total CO2-exchange of an aspen population (32 trees) was measured using a growth chamber gas analysis system which had been shown to measure accurately the actual carbon gain of the population. The CO2-exchange rates of the components (e.g. roots, stems, leaves) were measured in the light and dark and these rates were used to calculate the total CO2-exchange of the population using a computer model. The carbon gain during the photoperiod was underestimated by 25% in the simulation while the carbon loss during the nyctoperiod was overestimated 100% by the simulation.
The Biogenesis Of Peroxisomal Catalase In Rat Liver, Paul Bernard Lazarow
The Biogenesis Of Peroxisomal Catalase In Rat Liver, Paul Bernard Lazarow
Student Theses and Dissertations
Rat liver peroxisomal catalase was purified to homogeneity. The starting material was purified peroxisomes, The purity of the final preparation was judged by Sephadex G-200 chromatography, SDS gel electrophoresis, spectral analysis, and immunochemical means. Two sera containing anticatalase antibodies were prepared. The first, a rabbit serum, contained a minor impurity. The anticatalase was purified forty times by affinity chromatography and the contaminating antibodies were thereby removed. The second serum, prepared in a goat, was proved to be monospecific by immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis. The standard methods of immunoprecipitation were modified to allow the specific precipitation of a minor component (catalase) out …
A Mineralocorticoid-Dependent Effect Of Prestress On Avoidance Responding In Rats, Peter Gray
A Mineralocorticoid-Dependent Effect Of Prestress On Avoidance Responding In Rats, Peter Gray
Student Theses and Dissertations
Rats made more free-operant avoidance responses if they were given a brief prestress 30 min before the test than if they were undisturbed before the test. This effect of prestress occurred in normal rats whether foot shock, air blast, or simple handling served as the prestress. The effect did not, however, occur in adrenalectomized rats. The effect also did not occur in intact rats who were maintained on 1.5% NaCl drinking fluid, a procedure which is known to inhibit mineralocorticoid secretion. Injection of mineralocorticoid, in either adrenalectomized rats or intact NaCl-maintained rats, renewed the effect of prestress and had no …
An Analysis Of Spatial Summation In The Receptive Fields Of Goldfish Retinal Ganglion Cells, Michael William Levine
An Analysis Of Spatial Summation In The Receptive Fields Of Goldfish Retinal Ganglion Cells, Michael William Levine
Student Theses and Dissertations
The axons of retinal ganglion cells convey the signals from which the brain constructs its visual percept of the world. The considerable processing done in the retina is implicit in these signals; it is therefore desirable to understand this processing in some detail. Only one aspect of retinal processing is considered--the spatial interactions within either the center or the surround of the receptive field of the ganglion cell. A generalized model for this restricted processing is proposed: the independent signals in each of two separately stimulated areas may undergo non-linear transformation; the two areas may interact at one or several …
Patterns Of Electrical Communication Among Gymnotoid Fish, Carl Douglas Hopkins
Patterns Of Electrical Communication Among Gymnotoid Fish, Carl Douglas Hopkins
Student Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents the results of a twelve-month field study of the behavior and ecology of gymnotid fish from the Rupununi District of Guyana, South America, and from Trinidad, W.I. There are 13 species of gymnotids in the Rupununi District, of which six to eight species occur frequently in the main study area in Moco-moco Creek. All species produce electrical discharges which are presumably used for object location and for electrical communication. Gymnotids are active at night and inactive during the day. Some species tend to specialize on the types of daytime hiding places selected, while others generalize. Eigenmannia virescens …
Purification And Properties Of Bacteriophage F2 Replicase, Nina V. Fedoroff
Purification And Properties Of Bacteriophage F2 Replicase, Nina V. Fedoroff
Student Theses and Dissertations
The present dissertation concerns the purification and properties of an RNA-dependent ribonucleotide-polymerizing enzyme (RNA replicase) produced during infection of E. coli with the RNA bacteriophage f2. Studies on the RNA replicase of the distantly-related bacteriophage Q3 have established the feasibility of using a simplified assay for replicase activity based on the ability of the enzyme to polymerize GTP in the presence of polycytidylic acid template. A similar poly Cdependent poly G polymerase activity is detectable in E. coli infected with bacteriophage f2. The f2 poly G polymerase has been purified by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE cellulose, affinity chromatography on …
Studies On Ribosome-Membrane Interaction, Dominica Borgese
Studies On Ribosome-Membrane Interaction, Dominica Borgese
Student Theses and Dissertations
Several aspects of the relationship between free and membrane-bound ribosomes and of the ribosome-membrane interaction were investigated in a rat liver cell-free system. a) When nascent polypeptide chains were terminated by incubating rough microsomes in a medium optimal for amino acid incorporation, a subsequent incubation in a solution containing 0.5 M KCl and 0.0025 M MgCl2 resulted in a partial detachment of ribosomes, as 40 S and 60 S particles. b) Solutions containing high concentrations of monovalent ions (1 M KCl) and no magnesium ions detached essentially all membrane-bound ribosomes as unfolded subunits, while the peptidyl tRNA molecules remained …

Smooth-Stemmed Turnip, B J. Quinlivan, A. C. Devitt
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Cruciferous weeds are common throughout the agricultural areas of Western Australia. They include wild turnip, wild mustard, wild radish, charlock and raphistrum weed or short fruited turnip.
Another one—tentatively named smooth-stemmed turnip—has recently been sighted. Its exact weed potential will not be known for some years, but it is likely to spread through the south coastal districts where the climate and sandy surfaced soils favour its growth.

Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.
This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.
This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.

Dust Storms Cause Yield Losses, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, C. H. Trotman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Farmers and research workers are well aware that heavy grazing during summer loosens and exposes soil to the action of strong winds and summer thunder storms. They also realise that dust storms mean soil loss from paddocks, but until now there has been little idea of the effect of these storms on crop yields in subsequent seasons.

A Study Of Nektonic And Benthic Faunas Of The Shallow Gulf Of Mexico Off The State Of Mississippi As Related To Some Physical, Chemical, And Geological Factors, James S. Franks, J.Y. Christmas, Walter L. Siler, Ralph Combs, Richard Waller, Charles Burns
Gulf and Caribbean Research
A seasonal study of the nektonic and benthic faunas of the shallow Gulf of Mexico off Mississippi was conducted from January 1967 through May 1969. It was planned to sample monthly six fixed offshore stations at depths ranging from 5 to 50 fathoms in the open Gulf. In general this was carried out fairly well.
Water samples were taken from surface, midwater, and bottom levels each time a station was occupied, and temperatures and salinities were recorded for each of these. Samples were tested for the presence of nitrates, nitrites, ortho-phosphates and total phosphates. Secchi disc extinction points were recorded. …

Effect On Bees Of Insecticides Used On Rape, A C. Kessell
Effect On Bees Of Insecticides Used On Rape, A C. Kessell
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Rapeseed could provide beekeepers in Western Australia with a valuable new honey crop—hut insecticidal spraying of rape at flowering time is a potentially serious threat to most commercial beekeepers.
There are indications that insect pollination may improve rapeseed yields, so both growers and beekeepers could gain from a co-operative approach to the problem. Spraying after sundown and preventing spray drift to nearby apiaries should avoid most losses.

Limnology Of Four Bauxite Open-Pit Lakes, George L. Harp, Ronald D. Hubbard
Limnology Of Four Bauxite Open-Pit Lakes, George L. Harp, Ronald D. Hubbard
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The aquatic flora and fauna and 18 physicochemical characteristics of four bauxite open-pit lakes were studied from September 1969 to August 1970. The least acid lake (pH 3.4-4.4) supported 49 different aquatic insects, plankton, and higher aquatic plants. The most acid lake (pH 2.7-3.2) supported only 26 different plants and animals. Bauxite open-pit lakes within the pH range studied appear to be as relatively unproductive as their coal strip-mine lake counterparts, with which they share physicochemical and biological characteristics. Benthic macrofaunal diversity and abundance appear to be related more closely to distribution and abundance of leaf detritus than to hydrogen-ion …

Recognizability And Reproducibility Of Airphoto Interpreted Landscape Units, Robert Dean Heil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A physiographic terrain analysis study using the principles of airphoto interpretation was made: (1) to determine the internal homogeneity of airphoto interpreted mapping units, (2) to determine the variability in characteristics among different occurrences of the same mapping unit, and (3) to determine if the units differentiated were sufficiently different to warrant discrimination. The study was conducted in Sedgewick County, Colorado. The study area was comprised of four distinctly different land forms [sic]: a major river and its associated floodplain and terraces; a level to nearly level loamy upland plain; a level to sloping sandy upland plain; and steeply sloping, …
