The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi Mar 1972

The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Gout and pseudogout, two metabolically different diseases, occur rarely in the same individual. A patient is reported who featured calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and monosodium urate cryslals simultaneously in the synovial fiuid exudate which was removed during an acute arthritic attack of the left knee. The patient represents the seventh such case reported in the literature. The pathogenetic differences of gout and pseudogout are reviewed as they relate to the role of the crystal.

Induced Changes In The Rates Of Uridine-3H Uptake And Incorporation During The G1 And S Periods Of Synchronized Chinese Hamster Cells, Peter J. Stambrook, Jesse E. Sisken Mar 1972

Induced Changes In The Rates Of Uridine-3H Uptake And Incorporation During The G1 And S Periods Of Synchronized Chinese Hamster Cells, Peter J. Stambrook, Jesse E. Sisken

Biology Faculty Publications

The rates of uridine-5-3H incorporation into RNA and the rates of uridine uptake into the acid-soluble pool during the cell cycle of V79 Chinese hamster cells were examined. Cells cultured on Eagle's minimal essential medium supplemented with fetal calf serum, lactalbumin hydrolysate, glutamine, and trypsin displayed rates of incorporation and uptake which increased only slightly during G1 and accelerated sharply as DNA synthesis commenced. In contrast, cells cultured on minimal essential medium supplemented only with calf serum exhibited rates of incorporation and uptake which increased linearly through both G1 and S. The transition from one pattern …

Echinococcus Vogeli Sp. N. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) From The Bush Dog, Speothos Venaticus (Lund), Robert L. Rausch, J. J. Bernstein

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Echinococcus vogeli sp. n., from a bush dog, Speothos venaticus (Lund), captured in the Province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, differs morphologically from the three species of Echinococcus recognized as valid. E. vogeli sp. n. is distinguished from E. granulosus (Batsch 1786) by its larger rostellar hooks, different proportions of the strobila, tubular, sac-like gravid uterus, and different arrangement of the female genital ducts. from E. multilocularis Leuckart 1863 by its larger rostellar hooks, different proportions of the strobila, position of genital pore, and greater number of testes; from E. oligarthrus (Diesing 1863) by different proportions of the strobila, position of genital …

Mobbing Behavior Of Mexican Jays (Aphelocoma Ultramarina) And Scrub Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Jack F. Cully Jr.

Biology ETDs

Mobbing behavior of Mexican Jays (Aphelocoma ultrarmarina) and Scrub Jays (A. coerulescens) to a Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) was studied in field and laboratory experiments during 1970 and 1971. In both series Mexican Jays had a stronger response to the owl in rate of calling, and a longer lasting response. Population distribution patterns and social compatibility of flock members are considered the most important differences in explaining the stronger response of Mexican Jays to the owl. Hand-reared naive Mexican and Scrub jays were also tested in the laboratory. At age 80 days Scrub Jays mobbed the owl. The naive …

Torrent Ducks Of The Andes, Paul A. Johnsgard Feb 1972

Torrent Ducks Of The Andes, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Throughout the world there is probably no more rigorous environment for waterfowl than that provided by the Andean streams in South America. Rushing down the mountains from an altitude of 18,000 feet or more, tumbling over precipices, the streams eventually merge and grow into such giants as the Orinoco, Amazon, and Rio de la Plata on the Atlantic slope, or empty direct into the Pacific on the west side. In the intermediate elevations, mainly between 5,000 and 10,000 feet, a remarkable duck, fittingly called the torrent duck (Merganetta armata) makes its home among the rapids and cataracts. This …

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith Jan 1972

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith

Faculty Publications

A simple theory of gas-phase termolecular atomic recombination kinetics is presented which treats the bound-complex (BC) mechanism in a fashion which parallels the Roberts, Bernstein, and Curtiss resonance theory of the energy-transfer (ET) mechanism. The ET rate constant has a low temperature maximum, but the BC rate constant does not. The contributions of the two mechanisms to the low-temperature recombination of hydrogen atoms, with He, Ar, and H2 as third bodies, are estimated and compared. The presence (absence) of a low-temperature maximum in the observable total rate constant is determined by absence (presence) of bound vibrational levels of the hydrogen-third …

Glutamic acid and glutamine are present in unusually large concentrations in brain. The only known enzymatic mechanism which has been reported for the synthesis of glutamine is that catalysed by glutamine synthetase (E.C.6.3.1.2). These amino acids provide a very useful probe for studying precursor-product relationships in brain tissue in vivo. It is evident that the non-steady state situation presented by injection of a single dose of inhibitor followed by a tracer dose of a labelled precursor at some later time-a practice which has been used extensively in previous attempts to clarify the effects of metabolic inhibitors-makes it rather difficult to …

Comparative Ecological, Morphological, And Behavioral Studies Of The Southern Blacknose Dace, Rhinichthys Atratulus Obtustjs Agassiz, And The Eastern Blacknose Dace, Bhinichtbis Atbatulus Atra'fulus (Hermann), In High And Low Altitude Streams In West Virginia And Virginia, Michael L. Little

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Comparative ecological, aorphological, and behavioral studies of the southern blaeknose dace, Rhiniohthys atratulus obtusus Agassiz, and the eastern blaokaose dace, B.hiniohtpys atratulus atratulus (Heraann), were made in high and low altitude streaas in West Virginia and Virginia. Statistical comparisons of the morphology of a. a.atratulus and R-.a.-obtusus showed no reliable body character that differentiated the two subspecies. Statistical tests indicated an intergrading population in Gandy Creek, a tributary of the Cheat River, in West Virginia. This was further substantiated by collecting males of the atratulus phenotype along with males of the native obtusus phenotype in adjacent sections of Gandy Creek. …

A Floristic Study And Grouse Production In The Mille Lacs Wildlife Area, Michael J. Scanlan Jan 1972

A Floristic Study And Grouse Production In The Mille Lacs Wildlife Area, Michael J. Scanlan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The upland vegetation in four stands was analyzed for differences in conditions important for ruffed grouse production. The structure of the control stand suggests that Acer saccharum and other shade-tolerant tree species will replace the dominants Quercus borealis and Populus tremuloides. The Acer saccharum would not be useful to grouse. In an adjacent stand in which forest litter had been burned, there was a tremendous amount of reproduction of trembling aspen and much less sugar maple reproduction, compared with the control stand. Differences in the understory beneficial to grouse also were found.

Influence Of Soil Acidity On The Occurrence Of Athiorhodaceae, Eville Gorham, Douglas C. Pratt Jan 1972

Influence Of Soil Acidity On The Occurrence Of Athiorhodaceae, Eville Gorham, Douglas C. Pratt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Enrichment cultures from strongly acid Sphagnum bog peats and moderately acid to circumneutral fen peats revealed Athiorhodaceae to be present in almost all suitably wet samples above pH 5.3 and absent from almost all samples below pH 4.7. These bacteria were recorded in only one of fifty cultures from acid humus layers in a jack pine forest, and in none of thirty cultures from moderately acid humus layers in a mixed woodland. They were also absent from old-field surface soils, which often contained considerable amounts of organic litter.

Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn Jan 1972

Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Plasma concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, inorganic phosphate, glucose, lactic acid and total carbon dioxide and whole blood pH and hematocrit were determined for nine species of fish from the Upper Mississippi River area. Most of the values obtained fall within the range of values published for other freshwater fishes, except that the plasma concentrations of potassium and chloride in sexually mature walleye pike were low. The chloride was compensated for by a high plasma total carbon dioxide. Further studies should establish whether these blood chemistry values may be considered of normal range. counties.

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds Jan 1972

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The division Chrysophyta has previously been formulated to include three diverse groups. A computer analysis was made of the individual orders within the division to determine the "naturalness" of this grouping and also to show how computer techniques may be used for this purpose. The computer methods are described, and a possible system of classification of the division based on the computer analysis is presented.

Aquatic Stages Of Stratiomys Normula Unilimbata Loew. (Diptera: Stratiomyiidae), Blanchard O. Krogstad Jan 1972

Aquatic Stages Of Stratiomys Normula Unilimbata Loew. (Diptera: Stratiomyiidae), Blanchard O. Krogstad

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A study of the life cycle and behavior of the Stratiomys normula unilimbata Loew. in a pond in Itasca State Pork, Minnesota, showed that larvae overwinter in the bottom of the shallow pond and emerge in July. Some of the mortality factors are suggested, including the ichneumonid parasite, Ceratophygadeuon sp., reared from the larva and drowning of the pupa following a sudden increase in water level. Drastic reduction of the water level would also result in larval mortality.

Migration And Mortality Of Banded Mourning Doves, Lawrence L. Thomforde Jan 1972

Migration And Mortality Of Banded Mourning Doves, Lawrence L. Thomforde

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Banding data gathered over a three-year period at Savage, Minnesota, were analyzed to determine migration patterns and mortality rates of 2,218 mourning doves. The age ratio among trapped doves was 1.19 immatures per 1 adult and the sex ratio 3.84 males per 1 female. The weighted mean annual mortality rate for immature doves was 58.5 percent. For adult doves, the weighted annual mortality was 28.2 percent. The total weighted recovery rate was 1.24 immatures to 1 adult. The data show that immatures are 75 percent more vulnerable than adults to being shot; although no difference was found in direct recovery …

Biology Of Chrysemys Picta Bellii In Southwestern Minnesota, Carl H. Ernst, Evelyn M. Ernst Jan 1972

Biology Of Chrysemys Picta Bellii In Southwestern Minnesota, Carl H. Ernst, Evelyn M. Ernst

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The turtle, Chrysemys picta belIii, was studied in southwestern Minnesota. The taxonomic characteristics are analyzed. The turtles are diurnal and have an annual activity period extending from mid-May to October. Activity and feeding are controlled by water temperature. The population dynamics are discussed. Growth is rapid early in life but slows after maturity. Growth is compared with that of other subspecies of C. picta. Habitat preferences, predation, parasites, algal relationships and shell abnormalities are discussed.
