The Effects Of Soil Salinity And Meloidoflyne Javanica On Tomato, Armand R. Maggenti, Adnan Hardan Oct 1973

The Effects Of Soil Salinity And Meloidoflyne Javanica On Tomato, Armand R. Maggenti, Adnan Hardan

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A non-sodic, non-saline sandy loam soil was salinized to anion-cation ratios similar to those naturally occurring in Iraq and California. The interactions of saline soils (conductivities 4, 8, 12 and 16 mmhos/cm) with a moderately salt-tolerant plant (Lycopersicon esculentum 'Marimond') and a plant parasitic nematode (Meloidogyne favanica) were investigated. Plant parasitic nematodes were shown to be an important modifying influence within the plant environment, either accentuating or ameliorating salinity stress effects.

For almost a century (42, 139) certain yeast, or yeastlike parasites of fruits and seeds have been known. They occur on a wide variety of crop plants and cause such diseases as stigmatomycosis," "yeast-spot," "eye spot," and "internal rot." They seemingly represent a phylogenetic unit. They have cylindrical or pyriform asci, and the hyaline ascospores often are characteristically arranged in two fascicles lying end to end. All have acicular ascospores. (See figs. 2, a-c; 5 , c; 11, hand i; 12, A; 13, c-h; 15,j-k.) They have similar habitats, and several species may simultaneously occur in the same fruit or …

Fisheries Report No 13 - Results Of A Biological Survey Of The Shire Of Kent, Western Australia, N. L. Mckenzie

Fisheries Research Reports

The Department of Fisheries and Fauna is responsible for the conservation of the native fauna in Western Australia. The main approach to this problem has been the creation of reserves for "The Conservation of Flora and Fauna". These reserves, known as "Wildlife Sanctuaries", are controlled by the Western Australian Wild Life Authority - a Statutory Authority serviced by the Department.

The object of the acquisition programme is to develop a reserve system which will include, as far as possible, a full and permanent cross-section of the State's native floral and faunal assemblages and, at the same time, provide for the …

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …

Rna Polymerase Activity Associated With Bacteriophage Φ6, James L. Van Etten, A. K. Vidaver, R. K. Koski, J. S. Semancik

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The Pseudomonas phaseolicola bacteriophage φ6 incorporated labeled UTP into an acid-insoluble precipitate. Incorporation was dependent on the presence of manganese acetate, ATP, GTP, CTP, and a short heat treatment of the phage; the reaction was stimulated by NH,Cl. The substitution of 14C-ATP, -CTP or -GTP for UTP, together with the appropriate unlabeled ribonucleoside triphosphates, disclosed that CMP was incorporated to the greatest extent followed by GMP, UMP, and AMP. Radioactive RNAs formed by the reaction were resistant to RNases A and T1 in high salt but susceptible to these nucleases in low salt. The labeled RNA co-sedimented and …

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a report on the analysis of family data gathered to test the simple recessive hypothesis for the inability to taste phenyl-thio-urea (P.T.C.). The simple recessive hypothesis states that the inability of a minority of persons to taste high concentrations of P.T.C. is due to the action of an autosomal recessive gene in the homozygous condition.

Growth Of Selenastrum Capricornutum Printz In Natural Waters Treated With Copper Sulfate, Gerald Eugene Schulz Aug 1973

Growth Of Selenastrum Capricornutum Printz In Natural Waters Treated With Copper Sulfate, Gerald Eugene Schulz

Dissertations and Theses

The green alga, Selenastrum capricornutum Printz, was used in an algal bioassay to determine the toxic properties of copper in various natural lake waters of Oregon. Lake water was collected and brought back to the laboratory where it was treated with various copper concentrations and inoculated with a cell suspension of the test alga. Growth of the alga was determined by direct cell counts. The copper ion activity, pH, and absorbance of the test cultures were also determined. The growth of the alga was found to depend upon the water tested and also upon the copper concentration used.

The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The nitrate ion specific electrode has been used to measure nitrate concentration in plant tissue. Nitrate concentration, as nitrate ion activity, can be read rather simply in an aqueous extract of the plant tissue in somewhat the sane manner as a pH measurement would be taken, In contract to more time consuming chemical methods.

A previous study of nitrate concentrations in barley treated with the growth retardant chemical, B-Nine (succinic acid 2, 2 dimethylhydrazide), had been carried out by the colorimetric method of Wooley, Hicks and Hageman. The study indicated lower nitrate concentrations in treated plants, as compared with untreated …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Phenological and cultural studies of common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) were conducted from 1969 to 1971 at Bowling Green, Kentucky. The phenological studies were based upon dandelion plants which were found growing in a Kentucky bluegrass lawn or in open lots. At this location the dandelion flowered throughout the year. Maximum flowering occurred during April and a secondary peak occurred in September and October. The number of flowering stems per square meter was not correlated significantly with precipitation, temperature, or day length. Length of stem was positively correlated with temperature and day length. The plants exhibited diurnal variation in flowering …

Enzyme And Tissue Alterations In Fishes: A Measure Of Water Quality, David E. Hinton, M. W. Kendall, J. C. Koenig

KWRRI Research Reports

A variety of freshwater fishes were studied by light and electron microscopy, enzyme histochemical and biochemical methods, The objective was to determine normal structure and function in specific target organs and to compare these to altered states in aquatic pollution. The basic question, "can fish tissues and enzymes serve as indicators of water quality?," was asked. Microscopic alteration in gill was indicative of copper toxicity at an exposure of 20 parts per billion, Gross and light microscopic alterations were indicative of a single exposure of channel catfish to 15 parts per million of methyl mercuric chloride (CH3HgCl). Microscopic …

Light And Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Developing Wheat Caryopses Infected By Tilletia, Melvin Douglas Grove Aug 1973

Light And Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Developing Wheat Caryopses Infected By Tilletia, Melvin Douglas Grove

Theses and Dissertations

Caryopses of wheat were studied during infection by Tilletia caries and T. controversa. Initially the pathogens penetrated embryos of the host. After the embryo tissue was consumed by the fungi, endosperm tissue was penetrated and consumed. Initial penetration of endosperm tissue was in localized areas. During infection the fungus mycelium spread intercellularly, but occasionally was seen intracellularly. As the host tissue was consumed teliospores were formed. At maturity a host cell layer 4-6 cells thick remained which retained the mature teliospores. Histochemical studies indicated that carbohydrates and lipids of the host disappeared soon after invasion by the pathogens. Nuclei and …

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

Nongeographic Variation In The Long-Nosed Bat, Choeroniscus Intermedius, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker, Bernard Wyatt Aug 1973

Nongeographic Variation In The Long-Nosed Bat, Choeroniscus Intermedius, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker, Bernard Wyatt

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Of the 12 measurements analyzed, only length of tail exhibited enough individual variation to warrant its deletion in analysis of geographic or interspecific variation in the genus Choeroniscus. Also, because of the difficulty in consistently taking the measurement, we also suggest elimination of postorbital constriction.

Specimens of Choeroniscus intermedius were found to exhibit significant secondary sexual variation in five of the 12 measurements studied. Therefore, it is clear that males and females should be separated in analyses of variation within members of the genus. Females were found to be the larger in 10 of the 12 measurements--similar to the …
