Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack Mar 1976

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

Formulas are derived for the van der Waals Cn coefficients for the interaction of a diatomic molecule in a II electronic state with an S-state atom. Two triatomic states arise from the degenerate IIstate. The average of the two energies has the usual Legendre polynomial (PL) angular dependence, but the difference in energies of the two states is shown to have associated Legendre polynomial (PML with M=2) angular dependence. Procedures for including spin orbit coupling are included, and the extension to interactions of Delta- and Phi-state molecules is discussed. Values of the spherical part of the C6 coefficients for the …

The objectives of the study were to ascertain and compare the kinds, distribution and relative densitites of small mammals . A variety of traps was used to capture the animals including Museum Special Rodent Traps , back- break mouse traps, scissor and guillotine- type stab mole traps , Sherman traps , modified Young traps …

The Comparative Toxicity Of Developmental Inhibitors And Organophosphates On Mosquitoes, Richard L. Orr Feb 1976

The Comparative Toxicity Of Developmental Inhibitors And Organophosphates On Mosquitoes, Richard L. Orr

Theses and Dissertations

Four developmental inhibitors (Altosid, Altozar, ZR-619 and ZR-777) and two organophosphates (Parathion and Abate) were tested on Aedes aegypti under laboratory conditions. When applied to fourth-instar larvae, the organophosphates were more toxic than the developmental inhibitors. Concentrations required for standard kills (LC50 and LC95) were lower for Altosid and ZR-619 than for Altozar and ZR-777. Field applications of Altosid SR-10 controlled Culiseta inornata for two weeks at 4 ounces per acre. With the exception of Dolichopodidae, most non-target aquatic organisms showed little response to Altosid SR-10. Although the developmental inhibitors Altosid and ZR-619 require higher concentrations for mosquito control, they …

A Revision Of The Genus Strategus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The New World genus Strategus Kirby is here defined and revised for the first time. Eight species are described as new: S. atlanticus, S. caymani, S. craigi, S. hipposiderus, S. howdeni, S. longichomperus, S. symphenax, and S. tarquinius; 12 new junior synonyms are established (including the rejection of six previously valid species); one species is raised from synonymy; and two new replacement names are proposed. Strategus now contains one fossil species and 31 valid extant species. A key to the males and females of all the species is provided for the first time. All taxa are described or redescribed …

It is argued that conflicting approximations in a recent paper [J. R. Stallcop, J. Chem. Phys. 61, 5085 (1974)] render the resulting theory invalid.

The Androgenic Glands Of The Pacific Crayfish, Pacifastacus Leniusculus Trowbridgii Stimpson, 1859, Larry L. Sanders Jan 1976

The Androgenic Glands Of The Pacific Crayfish, Pacifastacus Leniusculus Trowbridgii Stimpson, 1859, Larry L. Sanders

Dissertations and Theses

The androgenic glands of the Pacific crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus trowbridgii Stimpson, 1859, were studied experimentally and by light and electron microscopy. The androgenic glands proliferate in the spring of the year concurrently with an increase in mitotic activity in the testes. Degeneration of a major portion of the glands occurs in the fall, when spermatogenic activity in the testes is near completion. Cellular development appears to progress from small undifferentiated cells through stages of vacuolization and hypertrophy and terminates with degeneration or lysis. The fine structure of the vacuolated gland cells is indicative of increased metabolic activity and probable hormone …

Patterns Of Proteins Synthesized In The R15 Neuron Of Aplysia: Temporal Studies And Evidence For Processing, F. Strumwasser, David L. Wilson Jan 1976

Patterns Of Proteins Synthesized In The R15 Neuron Of Aplysia: Temporal Studies And Evidence For Processing, F. Strumwasser, David L. Wilson

Biology Articles and Papers

The time-course of changes in the pattern of newly synthesized proteins in the R15 neuron of the parietovisceral ganglion of Aplysia californica has been studied at 14 degrees C. 5% polyacrylamide gels containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been used to separate newly synthesized (leucine-labeled) proteins from the neuron. We have demonstrated that the pattern of newly synthesized proteins from the R15 neuron does not change significantly if 5-h pulses of labeled leucine are given during the first 72 h of in vitro incubation of the excised ganglion. However, the level of leucine incorporation begins to decline somewhere between 17 …

Comparison Of Phototactic Behavior Of Three Populations Of Dropsophila Melanogaster, Ross S. Anderson Jan 1976

Comparison Of Phototactic Behavior Of Three Populations Of Dropsophila Melanogaster, Ross S. Anderson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Phototactic response of three distinct breeding populations of Drosophila melanogaster are compared through experimental maze runs and under differing light stimuli. While it is suggested that more meaningful results may depend on intensified selection pressure and studies of a greater number of generations, evidence from these observations indicates a clear difference in photo tactic behavior between the fly population drawn from laboratory stock subject to in-breeding and the positive responses of the two populations captured "wild" and thus reflecting the selection process of nature.

G76-308 Principles Of Beef Cattle Selection, H.A. Fitzhugh, Jr. Jan 1976

G76-308 Principles Of Beef Cattle Selection, H.A. Fitzhugh, Jr.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Selection of superior seedstock leads to lasting genetic improvement by increasing the frequency of "desirable" genes and decreasing frequency of "undesirable" genes. The definition of "desirable" varies. Nature favors genes which improve fitness to survive and thrive in the natural environment. Man should favor genes which improve biological and economic efficiency of beef production.

The concepts, definitions, formulas and symbols that are the tools necessary for effective selection programs are discussed in this publication.
