The Botanic Garden Moves, Lee W. Lenz
The Botanic Garden Moves, Lee W. Lenz
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
In 1950, the decision was taken to relocate Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden from its original site—Mrs. Susanna Bixby Bryant's ranch in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County—to today's Claremont location in eastern Los Angeles County. The move reflected a wish to align the founder's mandate to "foster scientific research and public welfare" by seeking affiliation with the Claremont Colleges. The change enabled it to train graduate students in botany and related fields and draw more visitors to a garden devoted to native California plants. Accounts describe how the new site was adapted to its purpose, including the construction of …

Inventory Of Wetland Habitat Usig Remote Sensing For The Proposed Oahe Irrigation Unit In Eastern South Dakota, Robert G. Best, Donald G. Moore
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
An inventory of wetlands for the area included in the proposed Oahe Irrigation Project was conducted to provide supplemental data for the wildlife mitigation plan. This report including the data summaries follows a report which documented the interpretation techniques as presented by Best, Moore, and Brewster for inventoryinq small, predominantly Type I wetlands in the low-relief terrain of the Lake Dakota Plain. Wetland habitat in over 310,000 acres in the Oahe irrigation district was inventoried. There were 5305 wetlands representing 7530 acres, 589 acres of natural drains, and 1545 acres of stream habitat in the area. The data were stored …
Fisheries Report No 20 - Trawl Caught Fish And Crustaceans From Cockburn Sound, J. W. Penn
Fisheries Report No 20 - Trawl Caught Fish And Crustaceans From Cockburn Sound, J. W. Penn
Fisheries Research Reports
Cockburn Sound is one of the few sheltered embayments near the Perth metropolitan area and as such has been subjected to increasing usage by both the general public and industry. Historically the Sound has been a major commercial fishing area from which much of the fresh fish for the metropolitan area has been caught. More recently, as well as providing a significant commercial catch, a major sport fishery has developed in the area.
The first commercial trawling operations in Cockburn Sound were undertaken in the early part of this century when horses were used to tow small nets on the …

Fisheries Report No 31 - Pecten Scallop Survey On Southern Geographe Bay, September 1976, D. I. Heald
Fisheries Research Reports
Reports of Pecten scallops in Geographe Bay in late 1975 were followed up by a preliminary stock survey in February 1976 using 1.22 m dredges and by a more extensive survey in September 1976 using 1.22 m and 2.25 m scallop dredges and a 0.5 m* Baird grab. Two very limited concentrations of scallops were located adjacent to rough ground. The best dredge catch rates were equivalent to 44 kg per hour per standard haul and the maximum grab catch was equivalent to a density of six scallops per square metre. The extremely rough terrain resulted in considerable damage to …
Fisheries Report No 27 - A Survey Of Recreational Usage Of South Coastal Estuaries Of Western Australia, N. Caputi, R C.J. Lenanton
Fisheries Report No 27 - A Survey Of Recreational Usage Of South Coastal Estuaries Of Western Australia, N. Caputi, R C.J. Lenanton
Fisheries Research Reports
Over recent years, factors such as the State's population increase, a generally higher standard of living which enables people to have more leisure time, and better roads, particularly from the Eastern States of Australia, have all contributed towards an increase in the general recreational usage of the Western Australian south coast estuaries.
To aid proper planning of facilities to cater for an increasing number of visitors in these south coast estuaries, management agencies must be able to quantify the recreational usage in this group of estuaries.
This survey, therefore, attempts to identify and quantify the different recreational pursuits of visitors …
Fisheries Report No 24 - The Status Of The Salt-Water Crocodile In Some River Systems Of The North-West Kimberley, Western Australia, H. Messel, A. A. Burbidge, A. G. Wells, W. J. Green
Fisheries Report No 24 - The Status Of The Salt-Water Crocodile In Some River Systems Of The North-West Kimberley, Western Australia, H. Messel, A. A. Burbidge, A. G. Wells, W. J. Green
Fisheries Research Reports
Counts were made of Salt-water Crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) in the estuarine portions of four river systems in the northwest Kimberley, Western Australia - the Lawley, Mitchell, Roe-Hunter and Prince Regent. During the ten day survey 463 crocodiles were spotted, including 109 hatchlings. The maximum number of non-hatchling crocodiles present tin the four systems is estimated at 697. Very few large crocodiles were seen.
Populations were particularly small in the Lawley and Mitchell Rivers and the potential for recovery in this area is also small. Prospects for recovery in the Roe-Hunter and Prince Regent were a little better but further surveys …
Fisheries Report No 29 - The Predation Of Pot - Caught Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Longpipes Cygnus) By Octopus, L M. Joll
Fisheries Research Reports
The losses to the western rock lobster fishery through the predation of pot-caught rock lobsters by octopus were estimated from samples taken on commercial boats in the four seasons 1972/73 - 1975/76. In most seasons approximately 200 000 legal-sized rock lobsters were lost. In the 1975/76 season the estimated financial loss from octopus predation was $392 000. The estimated losses probably represent minimum values. Studies of the biology and behaviour of octopus were carried out to examine the methods of detection, location and entry into rock lobster pots by octopus. The use of octopus traps in rock lobster pots significantly …

Isoenzyme Loci In Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta L.) - Detection And Interpretation From Population Data, Fred W. Allendorf, N. Mitchell, N. Ryman, G. Stahl
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Previously reported results on natural populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) urged further studies using additional electrophoretically detectable loci. Samples of brain, eye, heart, kidney, liver, and muscle from approximately 50 specimens from each of two populations and a large number of muscle samples from several additional populations were examined. Electrophoretic and staining methods for the 37 enzymes studied are given in detail. Of a total of 69 loci detected, 54 loci were considered usable in population genetics screenings. The expression of the loci coding for these enzymes is described and interpreted. The results presented will serve as …

Distribution Of Some Predators And Parasites Of The Southern Pine Beetle In Two Species Of Pine, Jack E. Coster, Catherine Stein
Distribution Of Some Predators And Parasites Of The Southern Pine Beetle In Two Species Of Pine, Jack E. Coster, Catherine Stein
Faculty Publications
Southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman, and its natural insect enemies were reared from infested loblolly pines, Pinus taeda L., and shortleaf pines, P. echinata Mill. Southern pine beetle broods were most dense during spring (Mar.-May) and least dense in late summer. Populations were higher in late winter than in midsummer. There were no differences in beetle densities between the pine species. Twelve predators and 9 parasites comprised ca. 99% of the natural enemy complex.
Total density of the 12 predators did not vary with either season or tree species. Total parasite density, however, was highest in midsummer, lowest in …

Site Factors Affecting Growth Of Slash Pine In The Texas Post Oak Belt, W. D. Hacker, M. Victor Bilan
Faculty Publications
A study was conducted in the Post Oak Belt of East Texas to determine which site factors affected height growth of slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.). Height-age pairs were developed from stem analysis data. Nonlinear regression was implemented to develop a generalized height-age model. After curves were developed, stepwise regression was used to determine impacts of environmental variables on height growth. Environmental factors correlated with height growth included A horizon depth and those related to moisture relations including seasonal precipitation, average daily temperature, and texture of the A horizon. Argulus, A Branchiuran Parasite Of Freshwater Fishes, G. L. Hoffman
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
"Fish lice" of the genus Argulus (suborder Branchiura) are Common parasites of freshwater fish, and may occur on frogs and salamanders. Argulids often cause severe mortality of fish in farm ponds, and sometimes in natural waters. Because information on life cycles, ecology, and host specificity is incomplete only a generalized account can be given.
Spring Viremia Of Carp, Winfried Ahne, Ken Wolf
Spring Viremia Of Carp, Winfried Ahne, Ken Wolf
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Dating back nearly SO years and possibly even to the Middle Ages, European pond culture of carp (Cyprinus carpio) and perhaps other cyprinid fishes has been plagued with a contagious disease of great importance. Variously known as infectious dropsy, infectious ascites, hemorrhagic septicemia, or rubella, the disease is probably the most serious cause of losses among these fishes; nearly sao reports have been published on the subject.

Coral Populations And Growth Patterns: Responses To Sedimentation And Turbidity Associated With Dredging, Richard E. Dodge, J. Rimas Vaisnys
Coral Populations And Growth Patterns: Responses To Sedimentation And Turbidity Associated With Dredging, Richard E. Dodge, J. Rimas Vaisnys
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Analysis of coral growth patterns and populations in Bermuda reveals that living coral abundance on the reefs of Castle Harbor, a location where extensive dredging occurred during 1941- 1943, is much reduced in comparison to external North-South reefs. Dead corals, sampled in the harbor, have skeletal patterns of growth which are similar and which show a marked decline in growth for several years prior to death. For the brain coral genus Diploria, both D. strigosa and D. labyrinthiformis are fairly evenly represented on contemporary North-South reefs and in the assemblages of dead corals from Castle Harbor, while D. labyrinthiformis, …

Hemoglobin Alc: Structure, Biosynthesis And Clinical Significance In Diabetes Mellitus, Ronald J. Koenig
Hemoglobin Alc: Structure, Biosynthesis And Clinical Significance In Diabetes Mellitus, Ronald J. Koenig
Student Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally high blood glucose concentrations and a relative or absolute deficiency of insulin. Approximately 5 per cent of the American population are afflicted with this disease, which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States today. Diabetes may result in the dysfunction of many different organ systems, yet the biochemical mechanism(s) underlying these dysfunctions is unknown. Even the importance of hyperglycemia in the development of the sequelae of diabetes is unsettled. One of the metabolic abnormalities known to characterize this disease is an increase in the peripheral …
Studies On The Complement Receptor Of A Human Lymphoblastoid Cell Line, Gary John Hoffman
Studies On The Complement Receptor Of A Human Lymphoblastoid Cell Line, Gary John Hoffman
Student Theses and Dissertations
A human lymphoblastoid cell line, 8866, was used to investigate a surface marker, the C3d receptor. A method for cloning these cells at a relatively high efficiency was developed and C3d receptor bearing (CR+) and receptor free (CR-) subclones isolated. Receptor bearing cells were identified by their capacity to bind to complement coated sheep erythrocytes. Of the many clones isolated, only a few contained uniformly receptor positive or negative cells. Most expressed an intermediate character, not only in the percentage of CR+ cells, but also in the degree of resettability of the individual CR+ cells. Clones initially wholly CR+ remained …

One new species of Pourtalosmilia is described, which represents a new record for this genus in the western Atlantic.
Observations On Territoriality In Alligator Mississippiensis, The American Alligator, And Other Points Concerning Its Habits And Conservation, Gordon Gunter
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Reasons are given for believing that charging alligators are serious, especially at their nests and in group defense of the young, rather than going through a “ritualized bluff.” Observations are presented describing the actions of competing alligators and the establishment of territories between them in Mississippi brackish waters. Recent history has shown that alligators can live in natural streams and habitats close to human habitation, if they are not molested. The writer suggests that they should be removed from such environments when they attain a length of nine t o ten feet because at that size they become dangerous. If …
A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess
A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Aldehyde oxidase has been partially purified from Oregon-R-C and tuh(ASU) strains of Drosophila melanogaster using an affinity technique. The two enzymes were subjected to a partial kinetic analysis and found to be very similar to one another. This indicated the problem of elevated aldehyde oxidase activity in tuh(ASU) at key developmental stages (Kuhn and Cunningham, 1976) is due to an abnormal regulation. A comparative isozyme study through the developmental stages showed no major differences between the enzymes indirectly supporting the idea of an abnormal regulation. A comparison of tuh(ASU) with four wild-type strains indicated it may be a fourth allozyme …
