A Revision Of Pectis Section Pectothrix (Compositae: Tageteae), David J. Keil

Biological Sciences

Pectis L. sect. Pectothrix A. Gray (Compositae: Tageteae) comprises a group of showy, yellow-headed species which occurs mainly in the arid and semi-arid portions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Although several regional floras have included one or more of the species in this group, no workers since Fernald (1897) and Rydberg (1916) have attempted to treat this portion of genus in its entirety. Since 1916, several workers have described new taxa (Cory, 1927; Johnston, 1940; Wiggins, 1951; Keil, 1974), and many new collections have been made. Recent studies (Keil, 1974) have suggested that the species relationships proposed …

Fisheries Report No 36 - Utilization Of The Bunbury And Geographe Bay Marine Resource By Professional And Amateur Fishermen, Michael H. Walker

Fisheries Research Reports

Utilization of the Bunbury and Geographe Bay marine resource by professional and amateur fishermen was investigated by personal interview, distribution and analysis of research log sheets, and examination of commercial statistics for the area, published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Total professional production for the years 1966/67 - 1974/75 for Geographe Bay varied between 225517 and 1218049 Kg (mean 497175) with a mean annual value to fishermen of $427708. Production for the Bunbury marine area varied between 157666 and 333810 Kg (mean 226526) with a mean value to fishermen of $311008. For the 1975/76 season the total production was …

Optical Management Of The Spruce-Fir Forest Against The Spruce Budworm, Gari B. Simon Jan 1978

Optical Management Of The Spruce-Fir Forest Against The Spruce Budworm, Gari B. Simon

Senior Scholar Papers

Proper management of the softwood forest-budworm ecosystem is vital to the future prosperity of Maine. In choosing a management strategy, economic as well as ecological effects must be considered. This paper constructs a computer simulation model of the budworm-forest ecosystem in order to better evaluate effects of different types of forest management. The budworm-softwood forest ecosystem is a highly complicated system involving three dynamic population systems: the host tree population, the budworm population and the foliage population. Each system is modeled, by regression analysis, to observations collected by entomologists over the past half century. There are large gaps of knowledge …

Probability Of Attack By Southern Pine Beetle In Relation To Distance From An Attractive Host Tree, Paul C. Johnson, Jack E. Coster Jan 1978

Probability Of Attack By Southern Pine Beetle In Relation To Distance From An Attractive Host Tree, Paul C. Johnson, Jack E. Coster

Faculty Publications

The pattern of southern pine beetle (SPB) attack was examined in two infestations in East Texas to determine the probability of host tree attack (PA) as a function of distance (X) from a recently attacked tree (pheromone source). In an infestation having a low rate of newly attacked trees per day and only a few pheromone sources occurring simultaneously, distance was a critical factor in determining PA. The probability decreased as In X, and was described by the regression model, PA=0.06757- 0.2583 In X. Distance, however, was less critical in a larger infestation which had multiple pheromone sources occurring simultaneously …

Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov Jan 1978

Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Assuming the subsocial route towards eusociality, I show that selection favors worker habits (under haplodiploidy) provided the mutant workers are able to bias the sex ratio towards sisters and/or selectively substitute their sons for brothers. If the original workers are not able to do this, selection does not favor the habit. However, under these conditions, selection is indifferent as to whether an individual rears offspring or sibs. This makes it easy for a mother to enlist her daughters services in rearing other offspring, since the daughter cannot evolve to stop the parental parasitism. These results deal with the origin of …

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson Jan 1978

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). The several different types of CB are due to the differences in tissue localization …

Studies On Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis: The Synthesis Of Glucagon, Svetlana Mojsov Jan 1978

Studies On Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis: The Synthesis Of Glucagon, Svetlana Mojsov

Student Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of the stepwise-solid phase approach was studied in the synthesis of the peptide hormone glucagon. The choice of this molecule was based upon: (1) the unusual chemical structure; (2) biological significance. The main features of the strategy employed are: (1) the use of Biphenylisopropyloxycarbonyl group (Bpoc) for Nα-amino protection; (2) the use of t-butyl based protecting groups for side chains of the trifunctional amino acids; and (3) the use of E-alkoxybenzyl-alcohol-resin as a solid support. At each step of the synthesis the Nα-Bpoc moiety was removed by treatment with 0.5% trifluoracetic acid in dichloromethane. …

Structural Analyses Of Murine Histocompatibility Antigens, Robert Julian Milner Jan 1978

Structural Analyses Of Murine Histocompatibility Antigens, Robert Julian Milner

Student Theses and Dissertations

The major histocompatibility antigens are the predominant cell surface molecules recognized by the immune system in the rejection of grafts between individuals of the same species. The genes coding for the histocompatibility antigens are extremely polymorphic; the products of different alleles are defined serologically. The studies described in this thesis were carried out on the major histocompatibility (H-2) antigens of the mouse. The goals of these studies were to define the structure of the H-2 molecule in solution and on the cell surface and to compare the structures of different H-2 molecules to provide some insight into the nature of …

Procedures For Eradication Of Hydrozoan Pests In Closed-System Mysid Culture, Adrian R. Lawler, Steven L. Shepard Jan 1978

Procedures For Eradication Of Hydrozoan Pests In Closed-System Mysid Culture, Adrian R. Lawler, Steven L. Shepard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

An unidentified species of hydrozoan in the family Eirenidae was inadvertently transported to the Laboratory with a stock of Mysidopsis bahia. The hydrozoan competed for food, ate the young mysids, and subsequently reproduced extensively. Hermit crabs provided minimal control. A detailed transfer procedure for the mysids eliminated the hydrozoans from cultures; hydrozoans were eradicated from tanks after removal of mysids by using 1:1200 formalin, hot water, and Clorox.

An Immunochemical Study Of The Combining Sites Of The Second Lectin Isolated From Bandeiraea Simplicifolia (Bs Ii), Charles Wood, E. A. Kabat, S. Ebisu, Irwin J. Goldstein Jan 1978

An Immunochemical Study Of The Combining Sites Of The Second Lectin Isolated From Bandeiraea Simplicifolia (Bs Ii), Charles Wood, E. A. Kabat, S. Ebisu, Irwin J. Goldstein

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Two lectins with different binding specificities have been isolated from extracts of seeds of Bandeiraea simplicifolia. The first, Bandeiraea lectin I [11] was specific for terminal non-reducing αDGalactosyl residues. It reacted with B substances from human ovarian cysts and with several galactomannans to form precipitin lines in agar gels. Polysaccharides with terminal αDGalactosyl residues, such as larch galactan, did not react. The lectin agglutinated B erythrocytes strongly but also reacted to a lower titre with A1 and very weakly with A2 erythrocytes [15, 28] indicating that terminal non-reducing αDGalNAc [24] can …

Technical Notes: Economic Weights For Direct And Fetal Genetic Effects In Choosing Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1978

Technical Notes: Economic Weights For Direct And Fetal Genetic Effects In Choosing Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A procedure is developed to determine the relative economic values of effects of sire of cow and sire of fetus. The economic weights for selection will depend on the time and discount rate. For example, for 10 yr and a 10% discount rate, the relative economic weights are 1.240 and 1.284 for the sire's direct genetic and fetal genetic effects when the fetal effect of the sire affects only the subsequent lactation of the mate of the sire. If the fetal effect is carried over to each future lactation of the mate, the relative economic weights are 1.240 for the …

Food Deprivation And The Regulation Of Meal Size In Larvae Of Chrysopa Carnea, Alan B. Bond Jan 1978

Food Deprivation And The Regulation Of Meal Size In Larvae Of Chrysopa Carnea, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

The course of repletion and the effects of food deprivation on meal size were explored in three experiments on larvae of Chrysopa carnea (Neuroptera). Feeding to repletion was found to occur within the first 30 min of exposure to food. Meal size increased as an ogival function of deprivation, up to the limit of gut capacity. Behavioral components involved in the initiation of feeding were little affected by deprivation and did not appear to be inhibited by distention of the gut. Termination of a meal may be mediated by the stimulation of prey-release behavior, rather than by inhibition of feeding.

Sex Pheromone Of The Tsetse Fly: Isolation, Identification, And Synthesis Of Contact Aphrodisiacs, D. A. Carlson, P. A. Langley, P. Huyton

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Sex pheromones isolated from the cuticle of the female tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood, release mating behavior in the malefly at ultra- short range or upon contact with baited decoys. Three active components were iden- tified as 15,19-dimethylheptatriacontane, 17,21-dimethylheptatriacontane, and 15,19,23-trimethylheptatriacontane. Chemical and biological comparisons show that the natural and synthetic compounds are identical.

Some Basic Facts About Primary Blowflies, N Monzu Jan 1978

Some Basic Facts About Primary Blowflies, N Monzu

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research has begun on blowfly species attacking sheep in Western Australia. Already this research has indicated the importance of a species in Western Australia which is not a problem in the Eastern States.

Future management of sheep flocks to minimise fly strike may require recognition of the differences between blowfly species. This article gives a description of the primary species - those which can initiate strikes.
