A Comparative Study Of The Myosin Light Chain Kinases From Myoblast And Muscle Sources. Studies On The Kinases From Proliferative Rat Myoblasts In Culture, Rat Thigh Muscle, And Rabbit Skeletal Muscle, S. P. Scordilis, R. S. Adelstein Dec 1978

S. Adelstein

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Myosin light chain kinases have been isolated from rat thigh and rabbit skeletal muscle and cultured rat myoblasts. From these preparations, two types of kinases can be distinguished: calcium-dependent and calcium-independent. Both types of kinases can phosphorylate isolated P-light chains of myosin from several sources (skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and platelet). Data are shown which support the phosphorylation of the same site on the non-muscle P-light chains by both types of kinases. The rates of these reactions are, however, different for the two types of kinases. Kinetic analysis of the myoblast kinase show differing affinities for various P-light chains (non-muscle …

Resource Use, Habitat Selection, And Seasonal Activity Of A Chihuahuan Snake Community, Robert Paul Reynolds Nov 1978

Resource Use, Habitat Selection, And Seasonal Activity Of A Chihuahuan Snake Community, Robert Paul Reynolds

Biology ETDs

Food habits and habitat selection were investigated in a snake community 1n northeastern Chihuahua, Mexico, from 1975 to 1977. A total of 418 snakes (20 species) was collected along Highway 16 from Villa Aldama to El Pastor. Examination of snake capture sites for the plant species present, and a study of structural characteristics of the vegetation and topographic features showed that snakes exhibited distinct habitat preferences. Rodent species present and their relative densities were assessed by 5400 trap nights at 18 trap stations.

Digestive tracts of 351 snakes of 16 species were examined and they yielded 153 food items. Rodents …

A Floristic Assessment Of The Datil Mountains, Reggie A. Fletcher Nov 1978

A Floristic Assessment Of The Datil Mountains, Reggie A. Fletcher

Biology ETDs

The Datil Mountains of west-central New Mexico were selected for a floristic inventory and analysis because of the lack of previous study in this section of the state. The location of the study area in relationship to the Basin and Range, Southern Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau physiographic provinces was a major factor in determining the initial need for floristic work in the Datil Mountain area. An annotated checklist of the vascular flora of the study area was compiled. For those 590 collected taxa, available information was compiled which could serve as a useful tool for land management in this …

An Analysis Of Hair Structure And Its Phylogenetic Implications Among Heteromyid Rodents, Jacqueline A. Homan, Hugh H. Genoways Nov 1978

An Analysis Of Hair Structure And Its Phylogenetic Implications Among Heteromyid Rodents, Jacqueline A. Homan, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Hair morphology of 36 species of the family Heteromyidae including the genera Dipodomys, Perognathus, Microdipodops, Liomys, and Heteromys was studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Variables investigated included length and width of hair, imbricate scale pattern, external and cross-section form of hair, and medullary characteristics. Although the hair of individual species could be characterized with detailed study, we do not believe that hair structure will be of value in evolutionary studies of this group below the generic level. The overhair of heteromyid rodents falls into two morphological types-hair which is round to oval in …

The Triumphant Trumpeter: Once Reduced To A Few Bevies, This Magnificent Swan Is On The Road To Recovery, Paul A. Johnsgard Nov 1978

The Triumphant Trumpeter: Once Reduced To A Few Bevies, This Magnificent Swan Is On The Road To Recovery, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Largest of all the swans and heaviest of North American birds, the trumpeter swan is on the increase. Once common and widespread over much of the western United States, the bird was a winter resident of the lower reaches of the Mississippi Valley, Louisiana, and Texas. During the last century, however, trade in swan-skins—-used to make powder puffs and writing and drawing quills—-and the sale of eggs to collectors had a heavy impact on the species. In the period from 1853 to 1877, for example, London sales of trumpeter swan-skins imported through the Hudson's Bay Company totaled nearly 18,000, an …

An Emulsion Dye Laser, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne Nov 1978

An Emulsion Dye Laser, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne

Faculty Publications

A laser dye which is insoluble in water has been dissolved in hexane and emulsified in a water matrix. When pumped with a nitrogen laser, this mixture was observed to lase. The emulsion is superior to a simple hexane solution because the excellent thermo-optical properties of the water matrix help prevent refractive-index gradients from degrading laser performance. This is a useful characteristic for flash-pumped dye lasers, laser-pumped dye lasers, and liquid filters. Another type of solvent system, a critical solution, is also discussed. For certain dyes, a critical solution has even better thermo-optical properties because of its ability to absorb …

Ultrastructural Observations On The Cuticle Of The Desert Millipede, Orthoporus Ornatus (Girard) (Spirostreptidae): Effects Of Seasonality, Bound-Lipid Localization And Dri-Die 67 And Chloroform-Methanol Treatments, Leola Walker Oct 1978

Ultrastructural Observations On The Cuticle Of The Desert Millipede, Orthoporus Ornatus (Girard) (Spirostreptidae): Effects Of Seasonality, Bound-Lipid Localization And Dri-Die 67 And Chloroform-Methanol Treatments, Leola Walker

Biology ETDs

In order to determine the effects of seasonality, bound-lipid localization, and treatments of Dri-die 67 and chloroform-methanol on the cuticular morphology of the desert millipede, Orthoporus ornatus, specimens collected west of Albuquerque in 1976-1977 were exposed to several experimental techniques. Because the dense nature of the cuticle presented difficulties in sectioning, a slightly modified procedure involving a vacuum oven was used in all experiments. A relatively standard procedure involving glutaraldehyde as a fixative and osmium tetroxide as a post-fixative was utilized in the descriptive and seasonal study. The method of Wigglesworth (1975a) was utilized in attempting to localize presumably protein-bound …

Effect Of Cold Acclimation On Cold Tolerance Of Laboratory-Reared Diapausing Pink Bollworms, Robert J. Wright, H. M. Graham Oct 1978

Effect Of Cold Acclimation On Cold Tolerance Of Laboratory-Reared Diapausing Pink Bollworms, Robert J. Wright, H. M. Graham

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cold acclimation and cold tolerance were studied in laboratory-reared diapausing pink bollworms, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), conditioned at 5°, 10°, and 15° C for 2,4, and 8 wk. Larval mortality, abnormal pupation and total mortality from 2-h exposure to sub-zero temperatures increased similarly as the temperature decreased from _6° to -15° C. Exposure to -9° C and above had little effect. The effect of cold conditioning on cold tolerance was most important at the _12° C exposure. Conditioning at 5°, 10°, and 15° C reduced total mortality after exposure to _12° C, compared to unconditioned larvae. Conditioning of larvae at 10° …

Bats Are Beautiful, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker Oct 1978

Bats Are Beautiful, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The thought that "Bats are Beautiful" may bring a smile to your face as you think of these ugly little creatures hanging from the ceilings of haunted houses and flying around deserted bell towers at midnight. You may also remember old wives tales such as "all bats have rabies" or "bats try to fly into women's hair." None of these things is completely true, and some of the tales have no basis in fact whatsoever.

Actually, the 875 species of bats form a unique Order of mammals (those animals possessing hair at least somewhere on their bodies), since they are …

Serologic And Hematologic Values Of Bison In Colorado, Edward O. Keith, James Ellis, Robert W. Phillips, Maxine M. Benjamin Oct 1978

Serologic And Hematologic Values Of Bison In Colorado, Edward O. Keith, James Ellis, Robert W. Phillips, Maxine M. Benjamin

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Recent economic and aesthetic interest in North American bison (Bison bison) has lead to increased interstate transport of these animals. Serologic and hematologic standards for bison are needed to detect disease in transported animals as well as within herds. This paper describes variation in blood physiological parameters in bison caused by variations in diet and season. Blood was taken from six bison and analyzed for serologic and hematologic parameters. Significant variation was found in blood urea nitrogen, chloride, cholesterol, creatinine, eosinophil, glucose, hemoglobin, lactic dehydrogenase, leukocyte, packed cell volume, potassium, serum globulin, serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, SGPT, and …

A Study Of Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Allergic And Asthmatic Patients, Cleora W. Barnwell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The role of T and B lymphocytes in the human immune response has been studied in allergic and asthmatic patients by many investigators. Theories of suppressed cellular immunity have been reported showing decreased levels of T cells in peripheral blood. Elevated levels of IgE, an antibody, have been reported in these conditions, but not shown to be significant in distinguishing the different types of asthma. A double blind study of 19 allergic and 42 asthmatic individuals was conducted measuring T and B cell levels and IgE levels. The asthmatic group was subdivided into three types, intrinsic, extrinsic and mixed. The …

A Comparison Of Kidney Preservation Methods By Oxidative Phosphorylation Studies, Devprakash Samuel, Stanley G. Dienst Sep 1978

A Comparison Of Kidney Preservation Methods By Oxidative Phosphorylation Studies, Devprakash Samuel, Stanley G. Dienst

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An oxygen consumption assay using adenosine diphosphonucleotide (ADP) was performed on canine kidneys to measure the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation. The purpose of the assay was to establish a respiratory control index (RCI) that could be used to evaluate kidneys preserved by different methods. Of the four methods tested, perfusion yielded the best results after 24-hour preservation. Additionally, four pairs of human cadaver kidneys were evaluated with the same assay. Some correlation existed between the RCI values of the nontransplanted kidney in each pair and the clinical viability of its transplanted mate.

Prolonging Kidney Graft Survival With Concanavalin A: Effects Of Temperature, Perfusate Composition, Ph, And Different Manufacturing Lots, Luis H. Toledo-Pereyra, Richard L. Simmons Sep 1978

Prolonging Kidney Graft Survival With Concanavalin A: Effects Of Temperature, Perfusate Composition, Ph, And Different Manufacturing Lots, Luis H. Toledo-Pereyra, Richard L. Simmons

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study analyzes the effect of temperature, perfusate composition, pH, and variable manufacturing lots in prolonging kidney allograft survival with Concanavalin A (Con A). Cold temperature (4°C), crystalloid composition of the perfusates, and neutral or mildly alkaline pH were important factors in the effect of Con A on prolonging allograft survival. Also, different lots of Con A from the same manufacturer produced variable results in prolonging survival. Thus, multiple factors should be considered if Con A is to be used to prolong kidney allograft survival.
