Cellulase Activities Of Soil Fungi, Jacobo Ortega
Cellulase Activities Of Soil Fungi, Jacobo Ortega
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
The cellulase activities of 8 isolates of fungi obtained from agricultural soils of Hidalgo County, TX were investigated by measuring the changes in the viscosity of a buffered solution of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), produced by the fluids obtained from liquid cultures of these isolates. The change in the viscosity of the reaction mixture incubated at constant temperature (30 C) was measured with Cannon-Fenske routine viscometers. A buffered cellulase solution was used as a control.
Due to the variability that existed among the isolates investigated, it was possible to select active producers of cellulase with the method followed in this investigation. The …

Muskrat Population Dynamics And Vegetation Utilization: A Management Plan, Thomas R. Mccabe, Michael L. Wolfe
Aspen Bibliography
Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) populations are located in extensive marshes that are managed either privately or by state or federal refuge personnel. Maintenance of a balanced muskrat population is important to marsh management, therefore necessitating accurate density estimates. Feasibility of a vegetational utilization index as a reliable population indicator is being tested at Fish Springs NWR, Utah.

Five-week-old male BALB/c mice were anesthetized and incised mid-dorsally to expose the fascia over the right kidney. The kidney was then palpated up and an inoculum of 0.05 ml containing approximately 100,000 viable Asperaillus flavus spores in phosphate-buffered saline was injected into the cortex. A second group of mice underwent similar surgical procedures, but were injected with phosphate-buffered saline only into the right kidney. This group was designated the sham-operated control mice. All mice, including controls, were bled for differential blood counts 24 and 48 h after surgical procedures and subsequently on an every-other-day basis for the duration of the …

Ultrastructure & Microtubule Patterns Of A Detached Cellular Oganelle, Peggy Mervine
Ultrastructure & Microtubule Patterns Of A Detached Cellular Oganelle, Peggy Mervine
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In the axopod, the cell appendage of heliozoans, a bundle of microtubules runs the length of the organelle with a lateral pattern depending on the species. In the species under study, Echinosphaerium nucleofilum, these microtubules are arranged in a double spiral pattern. Axopodia can be detached and the purpose of this study was to refine the detachment procedure, work out electron microscopy techniques and scrutinize the detached axopodia for differences from the organelle of a whole organism. Detached axopodia were fixed, embedded, sectioned, observed under the electron microscope and found to be similar in ultrastructure to undetached ones. Thus, …

Reproductive And Mutagenic Effects Of 5-Thio-D-Glucose Injections In Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Mary E. Mcmanaway
Master's Theses
Adult male ICR mice of proven fertility were intraperitoneally injected daily with 60 mg/kg of 5-thio-D-glucose for 28 days. Body weights of treated male mice were unaffected during the experimental period. Relative testicular weights were significantly reduced at 121 days after initial injections in 5-thio treated males, but no significant decrease was observed at 28 days.
Onset of sterility was estimated to occur at approximately 4 weeks and persisted for 5 to 6 weeks after cessation of treatment at which time fertility was restored.
Beginning with the first injections and continuing for 121 days, the males were mated with untreated …

Petalacte has been in continuous use for this genus of 1-3 species since proposed by D. Don. The only exception was Lessing's misuse of Petalolepis Cassini, from which he excluded the two original Australian species and substituted two from S. Africa. Lessing was not followed by later authors.T he genus was recently revised by Lundgren (in Bot. Notiser 127: 119-124. 1974) and this revision may be consulted for full references.

The Effects Of Photoperiod And Melatonin Injections On The Reproductive System Of Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Margaret Ann Shugart
Master's Theses
The reproductive effects of long (24L:OD), natural (14L:lOD), and short (1L:23D) photoperiods were studied in the male mouse, Mus musculus, ICR strain. One third of the mice in each photoperiodic regimen were sacrificed after 45 days. Half of the remaining mice in each regimen received daily melatonin (5-methoxy-N-acetyl tryptamine) injections for 45 additional days. Body weights, testicular and accessory sex organ weights were measured and microscopic examinations of the testes were made. Plasma testosterone levels were determined using radioimmunoassay. Other organ (pituitary, kidney, adrenal, thymus, thyroid) weights were also obtained.

The Possible Influence Of Nestbox Size On Nesting Behavior And Reproductive Success In The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Mary Anne Sydlik
Masters Theses
Recent studies (Lohrl 1973i Karlsson and Nilsson 1977) have shown that there may be a relationship between nestbox size and clutch size in several passerine species. The present study was designed to determine whether nestbox size influences the clutch size and reproductive success of House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and to test possible cues a female might utilize to assess the size of a given nestbox. Four types of nestboxes were used in the study; they varied in floor surface from 3 inches by 3 inches to 8 inches by 8 inches. No statistically significant differences in clutch size or reproductive …

Pisolithus Tinctorius Mycobiont Inoculations As A Factor In Performance Of Containerized And Bare-Root Shortleaf Pine Seedlings On Lignite Minesoils In Panola County, Texas, Hoy Lee Bryson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of artificial soil infestation with basidiospores and vegetative mycelia of the fungal symbiont Pisolithus tinctorius on ectomycorrhizae development of short leaf pine (Pinus echinata) seedlings grown in styroblock containers were tested in the greenhouse. These preliminary tests showed that both spores and mycelia will produce satisfactory ectomycorrhizae development. Various methods of inoculation had little effect on growth and development of containerized seedlings or on the accumulation of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Zn, or Cu in foliage and lateral roots. The styroblock containerization system used in conjunction with sandy loam soil/vermiculite (2:1 v/v) potting-mix produced excellent …

Comparison Of Three Mass Media For Communicating Forestry Information For Young People, Ross Lee Tomlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A comparison of three mass media ( TV, radio and newspaper) was made to find which would be more effective at communicating forestry information to young people. The field study was conducted at Nacogdoches, Lufkin, and Kilgore High Schools in East Texas. Questionnaires given to students before and after exposure to six media spots tested forestry knowledge and attitudes. One spot in each medium presented a hardsell threat approach, the other a softsell-humorous approach. A final questionnaire measured student preferences of the media. Analysis of data indicated newspaper and TV to be the most effective media, with radio less effective. …

Interpopulational & Species Comparisons Of The Genus Liquidambar, Diana Duckworth
Interpopulational & Species Comparisons Of The Genus Liquidambar, Diana Duckworth
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Growth patterns under controlled conditions and chemotaxonomic techniques involving protein and flavonoid analysis were used to investigate both interpopulational and species comparisons in the genus Liquidambar. Striking differences in budburstinq patterns after a dormant period were seen when comparing L. styraciflua and L. formosana. The latter species showed earlier initiation of growth. Dormancy patterns of L. styraciflua grown under growth chamber conditions showed a latitudinal cline. Cessation of growth occurred later in a Georgia population under both long and short day experimental periods than populations from Missouri and Kentucky. When grown under controlled conditions, flavonoid patterns from L. …
A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser
A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser
Feeding Behavior Collection
The domestic pig has complex nursing and suckling behaviour, consisting of several distinct phases of suckling by the piglets and a characteristic pattern of grunting by the sow. A review of observations and experimental findings suggests cause-and-effect relationships between the different elements of sow and piglet behaviour, and the relationship of the behaviour to milk ejection. Characteristic features of pig nursing and suckling behaviour are interpreted as an adaptation promoting even distribution of milk among a number of precocious litter-mates.

Sampling Problems And Interpretation Of Chemical Analysis Of Mineral Springs Used By Wildlife, D. Fraser, E. Reardon, F. Dieken, B. Loescher
Habitat Assessment and Management Collection
Mineral-rich springs used by wildlife were studied in order to develop an appropriate sampling technique. The mineral content of the water varied spatially within a lick, apparently because of contamination by nonlick water and animal urine. The spring source usually could be located with a conductivity meter. Samples contaminated by animal urine could be recognized by their high N content and usually by their color. The distinctive chemical composition of licks is best appreciated by comparing filtered samples of lick water with nonlick water collected nearby. Field filtration was necessary when samples were preserved with acid for trace-metal analysis. Soil …

Definition Of The Concept Of ''Humane Treatment" In Relation To Food And Laboratory Animals, Bernard E. Rollin
International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems
The very title of this talk makes a suggestion which must be forestalled, namely the idea that laboratory and food animals enjoy some exceptional moral status by virtue of the fact that we use them. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find any morally relevant grounds for distinguishing between food and laboratory animals and other animals and, far more dramatically, between animals and humans. The same conditions which require that we apply moral categories to humans rationally require that we apply them to animals as well. While it is obviously pragmatically impossible in our current sociocultural setting to expect …
