Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca
Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The seasonal and diel movements of fourteen immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Mosquito, Lagoon, Florida were monitored using sonic telemetry. The feeding ecology of this turtle population was also studied using dissection and stomach flushing techniques. An attempt was made to relate the movement patterns of the turtles to their feeding habits. The immature green turtles were found to make seemingly random, long distance movements (X╠äkm moved/day=7.79) and to remain in deeper waters (X╠ädepth=1.63m), apparently not feeding, when water temperatures fell below 19┬░C. When average water temperatures ranged between 19-25┬░C, the turtles were found primarily in shallow waters (X╠ädepth=1.1m) …
Summer-Season Populations Of Epibenthic Marine Fishes In The Indian River Lagoon System, Florida, Timothy J. Mulligan
Summer-Season Populations Of Epibenthic Marine Fishes In The Indian River Lagoon System, Florida, Timothy J. Mulligan
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Epibenthic marine fish populations were sampled in order to establish quantitative base-line data for use in long term monitoring of the northern Indian River lagoon system, Florida. Fish samples were taken by trawling monthly at 8 fixed stations from June through September, 1979 and 1980. Fifty-seven fish species representing 29 families were collected. The fish community was numerically dominated by a very few species. Anchoa mitchilli alone accounted for 87% of the 105,853 individuals collected. Abundance, domin ance, and species diversity were compared among the three lagoon subdivisions, Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River. Greater numbers of fishes were …
Dynamics, Movements, And Feeding Ecology Of A Newly Protected Wolf Population In Northwestern Minnesota, Steven H. Fritts, L. David Mech
Dynamics, Movements, And Feeding Ecology Of A Newly Protected Wolf Population In Northwestern Minnesota, Steven H. Fritts, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The gray wolf Canis lupus occupies only about 1 percent of its former range in the lower 48 states (Mech 1974a). Most of the range is in northern Minnesota, where the resident population is classified as "threatened" by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Wolves have been and will continue to be the subject of considerable controversy in Minnesota.
The first scientific study of wolves in Minnesota was conducted by Olson (1938a,b). That and all subsequent re- search was in the Superior National Forest (SNF) of northeastern Minnesota even though wolves inhabit approximately the northern third of the state. Consequently, …

Effects of age, smoking, vitamin and mineral supplementation, use of caffeinated beverages and oral contraceptives on glutathione peroxidase activity were determined and interelement relationships were investigated using the one tailed t-test and Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficients
Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii
Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The dynamics of epiphytic algae and phytoplankton were studied at a cypress stand in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia. Mean epiphytic algal biomass was 19.9 g m-2 and mean planktonic biomass was 3.4 g m-2.Nutrient concentrations in the epiphytic algae and the litter were determined. The algae had mean concentrations of 1.67% and 0.18%. They were found to immobilize as much as 0.5 g N m-2 and 0.06 g P m-2. This suggests that the algae are important as nutrient conservers. The phytoplankton were composed primarily of Bacillariophyceae. They exhibited a more or less …
A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock
A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock
OES Theses and Dissertations
A quantitative description of the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, was established using the density approach. A theoretical time density was estimated by the proportion of catch and catch per boat hour NOAA-NMFS fisheries statistics collected in Pamlico Sound, the Neuse River, and Core Sound. A clear quantitative description of brown shrimp migratory timing is found in the time densities. The impact of various physical tactors on the progress of the fishery in time and space can be objectively evaluated by using the time density statistics as dependent variables in modeling efforts. The distributions also enable …

The Effects Of Copper On Skeletonema Costatum (Greville) Cleve, Susanne Sybille Jackman
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Copper levels and dominant phytoplankton species composition were examined from six sites in Kings Creek on Virginia's Eastern Shore from March to August 1980. Creek copper levels were determined by an APDCMIBK extraction procedure and ranged from 0.003 to 0.020 mg/1. Diatoms were the dominant phytoplankters with Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve emerging as a major late summer species.
Subsequent laboratory studies involved 96-hour experiments using Skeletonema costatum (clone Skel) grown in enriched natural seawater. The water was collected from Kings Creek and enriched to Guillard and Ryther's (1962) f/2 media levels. Cupric sulfate was added to the experimental culture media …

Fifty-two isochromosomal lines ofDrosophila melanogaster were examined for the existence of additional genetic variations in ADH activity subsequent to treatment With guanidine hydrochloride, urea and heat. A wealth of hidden variation was discovered among and within the Mexican populations of the insect after treatment with the denaturants.
Statistical Analysis Of Cryptic Variation In Drosophila Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Gurbachan Miglani, Franklin Ampy
Statistical Analysis Of Cryptic Variation In Drosophila Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Gurbachan Miglani, Franklin Ampy
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Statistical analysis indicated that mean alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity levels within ADH1 and ADH11 isochromosomal lines varied significantly among the Mexican populations ofDrosophila melanogaster used. Also as indicated by coefficient of variation values for ADH activity, the relative amount of genetic variation differed among and within the ADH1 and ADH11 strains examined. The quantitative nature of the differences in ADH activity supported the concept of the additive gene action of the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) locus. The manner in which our isochromosomal lines were constructed suggested that genes regulating ADH activity inD. melanogaster were located on the second chromosomes.

Radial-Maze Performance In The Rat Following Lesions Of Posterior Neocortex, Melvyn A. Goodale, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The present experiment was designed to investigate the role of posterior neocortex (areas 17, 18 and 18a) in the maintenance of performance on the radial maze. Following training to criterion on the 8-arm radial maze, rats received either sham operations, bilateral eye enucleations, lesions of posterior neocortex, or combined enucleations and lesions of posterior neocortex. While the enucleated animals with intact brains showed a slight, but significant performance decrement relative to the sham-operated group, the other two groups, with lesions of areas 17, 18 and 18a, each showed a massive deficit. This large deficit was observed even in the group …

Aggregation Behavior Of Aplomyiopsis Xylota (Diptera: Tachinidae), Frank J. Messina
Aggregation Behavior Of Aplomyiopsis Xylota (Diptera: Tachinidae), Frank J. Messina
Biology Faculty Publications
The tachinid A. xylota is a common parasitoid of larvae of Trirhabda virgata and T. borealis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in central New York [USA]. Flies aggregated on herbaceous vegetation along the borders between old fields and more shaded habitats (shrubby fields or woodlots). Aggregations comprised from less than 100 to a few thousand individuals, almost all of which were male. Males continuously perched and moved about in sun flecks on the vegetation and frequently grappled with each other. In the old field adjacent to the primary aggregation site, the tachinid sex ratio was strongly skewed toward females. Aggregations of A. xylota …

Behavioural Budgeting By Wild Coyotes: The Influence Of Food Resources And Social Organization, Marc Bekoff, Michael C. Wells
Ethology Collection
Daytime behavioural budgets of coyotes (Canis latrans) living in the Grand Teton National Park Jackson, Wyoming, were analysed in order to determine how activity patterns ' ere influenced by food resources and social organization. In winter coyotes rested more-and hunted less than in other seasons. Pack-living coyotes rested more and travelled less than resident pairs or solitary resident or transients during winter months when the major food resource was ungulate (predominantly elk, Cervus canadensis) carrion. A mated female living in a pack rested significantly more and travelled significantly less than a mated female living only with her mate (as a …

Ultrastructure Of The Tegument Of Intramolluscan Stages Of Proterometra Edneyi Nomen Nudum, Robin Munsey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Larval stages of Proterometra edneyi nomen nudum were obtained from Goniobasis laqueata and prepared for transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The tegument of rediae, cercariae within rediae and mature cercariae were observed to see if any differences occurred in relation to enivronmental and functional factors. The tegument was found to be similar in organization to that previously reported for other trematodes. Rediae were found to have patterned, folded teguments with many small microvilli indicative of the function of this surface to absorb nutrients. Microvilli were also present on the tegument of the cercarial body within the rediae along with infoldings …

For sometime, expansion of the maxillary arch, by means of surgical and mechanical procedures, have been acknowledged with minimal attention directed toward the mandible. In this pilot study a surgical technique was employed in separating the mandible, A-P, at the symphysis. The interosseous void, approximately 10 mm., was then filled with autogenous bone marrow collected from the greater trochanter and the crest of the ilium.
The surgical site was then maintained for a period of eight (8) weeks with the aid of a precast chromium-cobalt splint and titanium mesh placed intradentally and at the symphysis, respectively. Following the stabilization period …

Electrophoretic Mobilities Of Topoisomers Of Φx174 Dna, Virginia Mckee Hanson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The analysis of nucleic acid structure by zone electrophoresis in agarose gels has become an increasingly important method in studies requiring the separation and identification of species differing only slightly in molecular weight or conformation. We have demonstrated the existence of several circular DNA forms that appear in cells infected with the bacteriophage ΦX174.
Wt/am3 heteroduplex molecules containing a single base mismatch (relaxed RFI molecules) were constructed in vitro, purified by sedimentation, and analyzed by zone electrophoresis on 1.4% agarose gels. In order to verify that the band of denaturation-resistant heteroduplex was indeed relaxed RFI, we compared …

Immunochemical Studies Of Conjugates Of Isomaltosyl Oligosaccharides To Lip I. Antigenicity Of The Glycolipids And The Production Of Specific Antibodies In Rabbits, Charles Wood, Elvin Kabat
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
The antigenicity of lipids is still ill-defined, and there is very little evidence that any pure lipid by itself will act as an antigen . To produce an immune response they must be complexed with or coupled to carriers (1-6) . Only glycosphingolipids and phosphatides have been found to function as haptens when mixed with carriers such as serum albumin (7), methylated bovine serum albumin (8), or other auxillary lipids (9-11), or when the glycolipid was incorporated into liposomes (12). Antibodies to glycolipids are usually directed primarily against the carbohydrate moiety (1, 7, 13, 14), and there is little evidence …
The Effect Of Storm Sewer Drainage On An Urban Lake, Jose Ignacio Aizpurua
The Effect Of Storm Sewer Drainage On An Urban Lake, Jose Ignacio Aizpurua
Masters Theses
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact from normal precipitation (ra in , snow) into an urbanized lake during 1978- 1980. Several stations were chosen, and various limnological parameters were investigated. Chemical analyses were used to estimate the annual load of nutrients input into the lake by the storm sewer and surface runoff. Excessive phosphorus and nitrogen loads from these sources were discharged into the lake.
Fecal coliform distribution in the lake before, during, and after several storm events was studied. In general, fecal coliform counts increased after storm events. Peak concentrations decreased markedly with distance of the …
