Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn
Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During the last two or three years, the three largest hospitals in Stockton (St. Joseph’s, Dameron and San Joaquin General Hospitals) have modified their procedures to include the search for Campylobacter. On the other hand, the incidence of Yersinia in California is unknown, as most clinical laboratories do not specifically culture for it. There have been only a few reports of Yersinia in this state (personal communication of Dennis Ferrero, Director of the San Joaquin County Public Health Laboratory). This study has a threefold purpose: to investigate the incidences of Campylobacter and Yersinia, especially in relation to the incidence of …
Analysis Of The Surface Polysaccharides Of R. Trifolii Su843 And Its Sym Plasmid Alterated Mutants, Jauh-Lin Duh
Analysis Of The Surface Polysaccharides Of R. Trifolii Su843 And Its Sym Plasmid Alterated Mutants, Jauh-Lin Duh
Masters Theses
The Rhizobium trifolii polysaccharides from SU843 and mutants--HC843(pBR1AN), HC843, 8002--in which the sym plasmid is replaced, absent, or mutated by transposon Tn5 were isolated. The surface polysaccharides of genetically altered mutants were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with one another and with the parent strain. The interpretation of these results is discussed in relation to the function of Rhizobium surface polysaccharides in the symbiotic process. The symbiotic ability of SU843 and mutant strains is as follows: (a) SU843, nod+, fix+; (b) mutant 8002, roa+ (still attaches to root hair), hac-, nod-; (c) …
Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis
Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis
Masters Theses
Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.
Raw water quality in the reservoir was monitored on a weekly basis for a full year from August, 1981 to August, 1982. The levels of …
Observed Changes In The Largemouth Bass Population Since Construction Of A New Pump Storage Reservoir At Charleston, Illinois, Lawrence B. Durham
Observed Changes In The Largemouth Bass Population Since Construction Of A New Pump Storage Reservoir At Charleston, Illinois, Lawrence B. Durham
Masters Theses
Lake Charleston, Illinois was electrofished to determine the status of the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, Lacepede) population after its reconstruction into a pump storage reservoir. The changes observed were an increased rate of growth of the initial year class, increased average growth increment of older bass, and a more abundant bass population. Factors which may have influenced increased growth were decreased turbidity, alkalinity, and increased water level. There is a possibility the increase in water level led to an increase in terrestrial invertebrates as a food source, and increased spawning substrate and cover due to submerged terrestrial vegetation. …
A Key To The Porcellanid Crab Zoeae (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) Of The North Central Gulf Of Mexico And A Comparison Of Meristic Characters Of Four Species, Robert C. Maris
Gulf and Caribbean Research
A taxonomic key is provided for the two zoeal stages of five genera and six species of the Porcellanidae (Crustacea: Anomura) from the north central Gulf of Mexico. Measurements, carapace structures, and appendages are compared among zoeal specimens of Euceramus praelongus Stimpson, 1860; Petrolisthes armatus (Gibbes, 1850); Polyonyx gibbesi Haig, 1956; and Porcellana sigsbeiana A. Milne-Edwards, 1880. Positive correlations are noted between rostral spine length and carapace length in E. praelongus (zoeae I) and P. sigsbeiana (zoeae I) and in posterior spine lengths and carapace length in E. praelongus (zoeae I) and P. gibbesi (zoeae I).
Evaluation Of A Leased Oyster Bottom In Mississippi Sound, John Supan
Evaluation Of A Leased Oyster Bottom In Mississippi Sound, John Supan
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Twenty-four pairs of spat plates, strategically located on a 600-ha (1500-a) oyster lease, were monitored biweekly to determine the rate of oyster spatfall. Spatfall occurred from May 6 to July 31 and again from August 15 to October 24, 1979. The greatest spatfall occurred from August 15 to September 4, 1979. Data from shell bags that accompanied the spat plates indicated a maximum growth of 3.2 cm in two months. Oyster spat which attached to the planted cultch materials on the leases grew up to 7.9 cm during the 17-month sampling period, ending December 11, 1979. The lease area is …
A Historical Note Concerning Salt In Vertebrate Blood And In The Sea, Gordon Gunter
A Historical Note Concerning Salt In Vertebrate Blood And In The Sea, Gordon Gunter
Gulf and Caribbean Research
In 1902 and 1903 G. von Bunge and A. B. Macallum became impressed independently with the similarity between the salt content of ocean water and vertebrate blood. Von Bunge’s ideas concerned NaCl and were stated in a physiology text. Macallum’s ideas, related mostly to the proportions of Na, K, and Ca in sea water and blood, were set forth in a series of papers ending in 1926. Bayliss (1927) and Pearse and Gunter (1957) accepted this thesis. Conway (1943, 1945) questioned it on the grounds that the salts from land erosion do not correspond to those in the sea. However, …

Ex-Vessel Value And Size Composition Of Reported May - August Catches Of Brown Shrimp And White Shrimp From 1960 To 1981 As Related To The Texas Closure, Charles Wax Caillouet Jr., Dennis Brian Koi
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Indices were used to test for trends in ex-vessel price spread (value per shrimp by size category), size composition, and ex-vessel value composition of the reported May-August catches (inshore and offshore combined) of brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) and white shrimp (P. setiferus) from the Texas coast, the Mississippi River to Texas, and Pensacola to the Mississippi River, from 1960 to 1981. Levels of reported May-August catch and ex-vessel value of the catch also were examined for the same period. Statistical tests were conducted to determine if 1981 was an outlier as compared to other years, in …
Multilinear Models For The Prediction Of Brown Shrimp Harvest In Mississippi Waters, Frederick C. Sutter Iii, J.Y. Christmas
Multilinear Models For The Prediction Of Brown Shrimp Harvest In Mississippi Waters, Frederick C. Sutter Iii, J.Y. Christmas
Gulf and Caribbean Research
A multilinear regression analysis of water temperature, salinity, and number of postlarval brown shrimp in nursery areas was used to predict the June and July commercial harvest of brown shrimp in Mississippi waters. A total of 80.2% of the variation in harvest was accounted for by this model. When an effort variable was added to the equation, the amount of variation explained by these parameters increased to 85.4%. The coefficients of the two multilinear equations were recalculated exclusive of the data set for the last year to test the predictive capabilities of the models. For that year, the first model …

Defensive Adaptations And Natural Enemies Of A Case-Bearing Beetle, Exema Canadensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), R. B. Root, Frank J. Messina
Biology Faculty Publications
The larval habit of constructing and carrying a portable case has evolved many times in the Holometabola. It is a widespread trait of the Trichoptera and Lepidoptera (e.g. the Coleophoridae and Psychidae). Among the Coleoptera, casebearing is found in four related subfamilies of the Chrysomelidae, the so-called camptosomates: Clytrinae, Cryptocephalinae, Chlamisinae, and Lamprosomatinae (B6ving and Craighead 1931). The larval case of many insects is thought to function primarily in defense by providing armor or camouflage (Otto and Svensson 1980). Here we describe the uses of the case and other defenses in a chlamisine beetle, Exerna canadensis Pierce, and speculate briefly …

Habitat Selection Related To Resource Availability Among Cavity-Nesting Birds, Timothy Brush
Habitat Selection Related To Resource Availability Among Cavity-Nesting Birds, Timothy Brush
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Variation in snag species and abundance appeared to explain most of the habitat selection patterns observed in five cavity-nesting riparian species over a three-year period. All species except Ash-throated Flycatchers were most common in areas with cottonwood or willow snags, which have relatively soft wood and are preferred nest sites. Classification of habitats on the basis of nest-site characteristics was useful and should be considered in other habitat selection studies.

Gulf and Caribbean Research
This communication reports the smallest verified egg-carrying specimen of Callinectes sapidus. With a carapace 20 mm long by 47 mm wide, the female measures considerably less than most other mature individuals, but about the same as an average-sized individual infected with an adult specimen of the rhizocephalan Loxothylacus texanus.
Coxsackievirus B4 Induced Diabetes In Cd-1 Mice, Mary C. F. Anderson
Coxsackievirus B4 Induced Diabetes In Cd-1 Mice, Mary C. F. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Most evidence to date clearly indicates that CB4 virus can affect the pancreas of both man and mice during acute infection. Yet, conflicting evidence exists relative to the consequence of the infection in both man and mice. The study described here attempted to provide definitive evidence on the relative role of the virus isolate (i.e. heterogenous virion populations vs. purified clones) in induction of prolonged diabetes-like disease in mice.
Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs
Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs
OES Faculty Publications
An inexpensive, reliable thermistor device capable of monitoring infaunal foraging activity was built and used in the laboratory to examine effects of temperature on sediment reworking by the maldanld polychaete Clymenella torquata. The worm defecated at least once per hour 55.0 % (12.0 "C) to 88.2 % (5.5 "C) of the time. Defecation rate was linearly and positively related to temperature. Estimated volume of sediment ejected per defecation (0.015 ml) did not change with temperature. Results are compared with previous reworking studies of C. torquata.

Breeding Behavior Of Captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes Forsteri), Mary Elizabeth Kiel
Breeding Behavior Of Captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes Forsteri), Mary Elizabeth Kiel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Breeding behavior of captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) was observed at Sea World, San Diego, California during July, August, and September 1980, and April 1981. Emphasis was on displays, courtship, egg-laying, incubation, and care of chicks.
I observed the trumpet display most often between birds of opposite sexes and I interpret it as a signal of sexual identity. I interpreted the sideways stare display as a signal of sexual identity important in pair bond maintenance. Three head movements studied shared several functions including comfort behavior and reduction of intraspecific aggression. My observations confirmed that the display walk occurs in Emperors …

A Population Study Of Three Iris (Iridaceae) Species Native To The Siskiyou Mountains In Southwestern Oregon And Adjacent California, Carol Anne Wilson
A Population Study Of Three Iris (Iridaceae) Species Native To The Siskiyou Mountains In Southwestern Oregon And Adjacent California, Carol Anne Wilson
Dissertations and Theses
The series Californicae is a natural grouping of Iris species native to Oregon, Washington and California. Natural and experimental hybridization is characteristic of the series which has led to confusing taxonomies for some species. Populations of species belonging to this series and found on the northwestern slopes of the Siskiyou Mountains cf southwestern Oregon and adjacent California were investigated. Methods used were numerical classification techniques for morphological characters including both discriminant and K-means cluster analyses and a chemotaxonomi c analysis of flavonoid pigments using thin layer chromatography.
Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik
Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik
OES Faculty Publications
Effects of storms on benthic infaunal communities have thus far been inferred rather than documented; especially lacking are studies examining immediate effects. To this end, the water column and 2 subtidal benthic sites were sampled before and after Storm David in September 1979. There were large post-storm increases in the numbers of infaunal species and individuals in the water column, presumably due to turbulent benthic boundary conditions. At the benthic stations, there were no pre vs. post-storm differences in the density of infauna; however, the number of species decreased at 1 station. There were storm-associated changes in the rank order …
Origin Of Human Trisomy 21 Mosaicism, Diane Dusenbery Waggoner
Origin Of Human Trisomy 21 Mosaicism, Diane Dusenbery Waggoner
Dissertations and Theses
Down Syndrome is a human condition caused by an extra copy of a #21 chromosome. At least one to two percent of free (not translocated) trisomy 21 cases are mosaics, i.e., they have two or more distinct cell lines. Usually, one cell line is 47 ,XX or XY ,+21 while the other cell line is normal 46,XX or 46,XY.
The purpose of the study was to establish the etiologies of the separate cell lines by determining whether the zygote was trisomic or normal. Meiotic non-disjunction in the formation of a gamete could lead to a trisomic zygote; loss of a …
Population Structure, Density And Movements Of The Texas Tortoise Gopherus Berlandieri, Frank W. Judd, Francis L. Rose
Population Structure, Density And Movements Of The Texas Tortoise Gopherus Berlandieri, Frank W. Judd, Francis L. Rose
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Gopherus berlandieri was studied on a 3.3 ha grid in Cameron Co., Texas for five years. One hundred two tortoises were marked (43 males, 30 females, 26 juv., and 3 adults whose sex was not determined). Numbers of males and females did not differ significantly. Juveniles comprised 27% to 9% of the population and maximum population density was 15 to 16 tortoises per ha. The number of females remained constant, but males and juveniles declined gradually from 1972 to 1975, then markedly in 1976. The percentage of shared individuals in successive years was higher for females than males, but only …

The Basicranial Anatomy Of The Nimravidae (Mammalia: Carnivora): Character Analyses And Phylogenetic Inferences, Nancy Ann Neff
The Basicranial Anatomy Of The Nimravidae (Mammalia: Carnivora): Character Analyses And Phylogenetic Inferences, Nancy Ann Neff
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The phylogenetic relationships of the Nimravidae (Oligocene through latest Miocene catlike carnivorans) are controversial: they have been placed either within the family Felidae, or as sister group to the Felidae, to the modern aeluroid Carnivora, or to the Caniformia. Adoption of cladistic analysis is not sufficient to resolve this controversy: all of the last three hypotheses of relationship have resulted from cladistic analyses.
Competing hypotheses of phylogenetic relationship are here demonstrated to be primarily the result of disagreement about the identification and distribution of characters. Such disagreements reflect the need for a rigorous method of character analysis to enable explicit …
The Measurement Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin For Pregnancy Testing, Carolyn S. Feldkamp, William H. Pfeffer
The Measurement Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin For Pregnancy Testing, Carolyn S. Feldkamp, William H. Pfeffer
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
/Among many measurable hormones, human chorionic gonadotropin (FICG) is commonly used for pregnancy testing because it is very sensitive and relatively specific. Pregnancy can be identified shortly after implantation. Because some reagents cross-react with luteinizing hormone (LH), the sensitivity of urine tests has been adjusted to maintain specificity. Radioreceptor assay s on serum are more sensitive than urine tests but similarly lack specificity. The problems of LH cross-reactivity are eliminated by antisera specific for the beta subunit. Quantitation of HCG provides additional information useful in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy, providing a prognosis in threatened abortion, and following neoplasms. Considerations of cost, …
