Atlas Of Wetlands In The Principal Coal Surface Mining Region Of Western Kentucky, William J. Mitsch, Jan R. Taylor, Kimberly B. Benson, Paul L. Hill Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
This atlas contains maps of wetlands and surface mining activity in the Western Kentucky Coal Field, and focuses on a 3960 km2 (1530 mi2) region where approximately 90 percent of surface mining in the Coal field occures. Some present and potential competition exists between surface coal mining and wetland protection. A wetland classification, based on the recent FWS classification, includes six types of palustrine systems and one each of riverine and laucstrine systems. Wetlands and surface mines are located on twenty-seven 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles that define the study region. A total of 460 km2 (177 …

Dispersal, Flight, And Diurnal Activity Patterns Of Adult Southern Corn Billbugs (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Robert J. Wright, J. W. Van Duyn, J. R. Bradley Jr.
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Dispersal into cornfields, flight, and diurnal activity patterns of the adult southern com billbug (SCB), Sphenophorus callosus (Olivier), were studied in eastern North Carolina during 1979 and 1980. Com plant damage (an index of SCB density) in fields with different cropping histories was initially concentrated either on the field edge next to last year's corn in rotated fields, or the edge next to the overwintering site in nonrotated fields. Although damage patterns and trapping studies suggested that SCB dispersal into fields was primarily by walking, SCB are capable of strong flight. Weevils of both the overwintered and summer generations were …

Jamaican Blue-Green Algae Collections Of J.C. Strickland, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Professor John C. Strickland (1915-1980) devoted much of his life to teaching biology, botany, and phycology at the University of Richmond. Throughout his academic career he maintained a keen interest in the Myxophyceae, or blue-green algae, studying their culture, cytology, and taxonomy (Drouet & Strickland, 1942; Strickland, 1940, 1946). Most of his collections of these and other algae were made in Virginia and are housed in the herbarium maintained by the Department of Biology, University of Richmond. However, he also made four trips to Jamaica in the years 1966-1971 before his health deteriorated to the extent that field work, and …
Determination Of Erythrocyte Zinc Concentrations Using Zeeman Effect Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Tanya Maranda Lewis
Determination Of Erythrocyte Zinc Concentrations Using Zeeman Effect Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Tanya Maranda Lewis
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research project was to develop assay procedures for determination of zinc in erythrocytes. Three methodologies were developed. The methods were evaluated on the basis of within-run and between-run precision. The most reproducible method, the 213.856 nm flame methodology, was used to determine red blood cell zinc concentrations in more than 200 samples obtained from the Neonatal Intensive care Unit at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
This study demonstrated that erythrocyte zinc levels in premature infants were similar to those of healthy adults. A linear relation between plasma and red blood cell zinc concentrations was …

Paper Replication Method For Isolation Of Radiation-Sensitive Mutants, S. T. Tan, R. B. Maxcy, T. L. Thompson
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
A filter paper replication system particularly useful for isolation of radiation-sensitive mutants of pigmented bacteria was devised. The fidelity of replication was high. Adhesion between a paper disk and a properly dried master plate provided adequate contact pressure. The replicas arising from this technique constitute a convenient apparatus for general application in isolation of clones sensitive to a discriminating treatment.
Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Student Work
The effect of overload training on adults has been considered for thousands of years. Centuries before Christ, Milo of Crotona carried a calf on his back daily until the animal was full-grown, resulting in one of the earliest accounts of the overload principle (Bergan & Scoles, 1979). Results of overload training on adults have been well documented (Tanner, 1952; Hellebrandt & Houtz, 1958; Berger,1962a; 1962b; Rasch & Pierson, 1963; Berger & Hardage, 1967; Stull & Clark, 1970; Leighton, Holmes, Benson, Wooten & Schmerer, 1967; Wilmore, 1975; Gettman, Ward & Hager, 1982). However, how overload affects children and adolescents is barely …
A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester
A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester
OES Theses and Dissertations
This study has particular application to the blue crab fisheries in Chesapeake Bay, an economically important industry whose successful management has been hindered by relatively poor understanding of the population dynamics. Recent biological studies have indicated a systematic spawning behavior which seems designed for ejection of larvae seaward from the bay entrance where they spend their pre-metamorphosis stages in the neuston. A physical mechanism for retention of the larvae in sufficient proximity to the bay entrance for their return at the proper time which involves the action of wind stress in shallow waters is proposed. Since the supply of blue …

Homing And Ecology In The Southern Flying Squirrel, Glaucomys Volans In Southeastern Virginia, Sherrie Lynn Sawyer
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether homing occurred in the southern flying squirrel, Glauaomys volans, and if so, the greatest homing distance. Information on the squirrel's ecology, reproductive biology and use of artificial nest boxes was also obtained. The study was conducted from November 1978 through March 1981, using nest boxes placed in a deciduous forest in southeastern Virginia.
For the homing experiments, twenty squirrels were released a total of 29 times along three lines at distances of 250 m to 1.6 km from the homesites. Squirrels were found to home successfully up to 1,000 m.

Recombinant Immune Interferon Increases Immunoglobulin G Fc Receptors On Cultured Human Mononuclear Phagocytes, Paul M. Guyre, Peter M. Morganelli, Renee Miller
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although recent studies suggest that interferons can increase the number of IgG Fc receptor (FcR gamma) sites on mouse macrophages, direct assessment of similar effects on human mononuclear phagocytes is lacking. We therefore measured the specific binding of 125I- and fluorescein-labeled IgG1 to human monocytes and leukemic cell lines after culture in vitro with highly purified human interferons. We report that natural and recombinant human gamma-interferon causes a dramatic (nearly 10-fold) increase in the number of FcR gamma on normal human monocytes and on the human cell lines HL-60 and U-937. Alpha and beta-interferons cause a modest but significant increase …

The Growth And Feeding Behavior Of Juvenile Spot, Leiostomus Xanthurus Lacepede, In The Nursery Region Of The James River, Virginia, John Thomas Mccambridge Jr.
OES Theses and Dissertations
The in situ growth and feeding behavior of juvenile spot, Leiostomus xanthurus Lacepede, was investigated for populations in the nursery area of the James River, Virginia. Growth of juvenile spot was found to be fairly rapid (11.34 mm/month, standard length) during their first summer in the nursery grounds, but it levelled off in the autumn. The mean size of spot after the first year was calculated to be 195 mm total length. The weight-length relationship was log W = -5.018 + 3.246(log L), where W = wet weight in grams and L = standard length in millimeters.
Juvenile spot appeared …

The Relationship Of Size Class Distribution To Migratory Behavior In Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) In Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, Mario A. Paula
OES Theses and Dissertations
The potential of migratory timing information for dynamic yield estimation in the North Carolina brown shrimp fishery has been shown. The present research investigates the influence of size class distribution on the quantitative characterization of migratory timing in the brown shrimp. Catch and nominal effort data were stratified into count size ranges and the time density model of Mundy (1979) was specified for each stratum. The recruitment patterns of the shrimp into the fishery was also investigated.
The stratification of time densities by size class has shown a definite pattern in the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp. It appears …

Simultaneous Functional Hermaphroditism In The Shrimp Hippolysmata Wurdemanni (Gibbes) (Decopoda: Caridea: Hippolytidae), Marie Hollister Bundy
OES Theses and Dissertations
The caridean shrimp Hippolysmata wurdemanni Gibbes was studied from a histological and a behavioral basis and was found to be a protandric hermaphrodite which later adopts simultaneous functional hermaphroditism. When the animal reaches a certain size, the androgenic gland degenerates, the male secondary sexual characteristics are lost, and vitellogenesis occurs in the anterior portion of the gonad. The animals do not lose the ability to function as males as evidenced by the presence of mature sperm in the gonad and the gonadal lumen of gravid shrimp, and the ability of both members of an isolated pair of shrimp to repeatedly …

The Effect Of Crowding On Growth Of The Cichlid Fish, Oreochromis Mossambicus, Bonnie A. Barrows
OES Theses and Dissertations
It has been reported that the Java tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, displays hypersensitivity to a substance it produces when biomass levels in a flow-through culture system exceed 20 g/1, resulting in reduced growth and high mortality. Experiments on the growth of this species in small tanks were conducted in order to determine whether O. mossambicus produces a growth-inhibiting compound under crowded conditions. This species was successfully maintained at biomass levels of 38 g/1 and 57 g/1 with a total mortality of only 4.5%.
The Java tilapia can grow rapidly in small aquaria, as indicated by the data taken during Experiment …

Solving The Pet Overpopulation Problem
Solving The Pet Overpopulation Problem
Close Up Reports
Because of the short pregnancies and large litters of dogs and cats, one individual female with all her female offspring reproducing similarly can be the source of over 4,000 new lives within seven years. Some of these animals will find homes complete with laps to sit on and fireplaces to enjoy, but millions of other perfectly healthy dogs and cats won't be so lucky. The overabundance of these potential pets tends to cheapen the intrinsic value of each individual animal in the eyes of the general public. The swelling problem causes some people to use cruel methods of disposing of …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Thirty diabetic patients new to insulin were entered in an open label prospective study of biosynthetic human insulin (BHI). All patients experienced symptomatic control of diabetes attributable to dietary and BHI insulin therapy. Detailed six-month evaluation data were reviewed in 19 patients. A significant drop in fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin was noted at two months, and a further modest decrease occurred at six months. E. coli polypeptide antibodies were unchanged from baseline at six months, indicating that no bacterial protein contamination of BHI occurred. Percent binding of serum antibodies to human insulin measured in 19 patients at baseline …

The Induction Of Tolerance To Heavy Metals In Natural And Laboratory Populations Of Fish, Wesley J. Birge, William H. Benson, Jeffrey A. Black
KWRRI Research Reports
Aquatic toxicity studies were performed on two natural populations of fathead minnows. One group of organisms was taken from a metal-contaminated flyash pond associated with a coal-fired power plant and the other group was collected from relatively uncontaminated hatchery ponds. Acute tests indicated that flyash pond fish were significantly more tolerant to cadmium and copper than were hatchery fish. At an exposure concentration of 6.0 mg Cd/L in moderately hard water, the median period of survival for flyash pond fish was 50.0 hr compared to 6.8 hr for hatchery fish. Both groups of organisms were about equally sensitive to zinc. …
Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson
Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

Vascular Effects Of Physalia Physalis Venom, Jose S. Loredo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of Physalia physalis (Portuguese Man-of-War) venom on vascular smooth muscle and elucidate its mode of action. We utilized the in vivo approach by functionally isolating the skeletal muscle vasculature of the dog's hind leg, and the in vitro approach by studying rabbit arterial ring segments.
Twelve male mongrel dogs were anesthetized with 35 mg/kg sodium pentobarbital. Arterial pressure was measured from the aortic arch and the cranial femoral artery, a cephalad branch of the femoral artery. The skeletal muscle venous blood flow of the hind leg was functionally isolated. Femoral …
Baseline Study For Monitoring Variations In Nitrate Concentration In Surface Waters Of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park In Relation To Watershed Types, Lester E. Harris Iii
Baseline Study For Monitoring Variations In Nitrate Concentration In Surface Waters Of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park In Relation To Watershed Types, Lester E. Harris Iii
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to compare the variations in nitrate concentration in the surface waters of five different watershed community types at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Monthly water samples were collected at selected sites below each watershed and analyzed by use of a specific ion electrode for nitrate concentration. Results indicate that variations in nitrate concentration are influenced by seasonal variation in rainfall. The yellow pine forest/chaparral watershed showed the highest mean nitrate concentration, three to four times higher than the other watershed types analyzed. Peak nitrate concentrations did not approach the maximum safe limit for human or …
Biology And Seasonal Abundance Of Hymenopterous Parasitoids Of Sorghum Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Frederick P. Baxendale, C. L. Lippincott, G. L. Teetes
Biology And Seasonal Abundance Of Hymenopterous Parasitoids Of Sorghum Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Frederick P. Baxendale, C. L. Lippincott, G. L. Teetes
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Four hymenopterous parasitoids of the sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicola (Coquillet), were found in Burleson County, Texas: Eupelmus popa Girault, Tetrastichus near venustus Gahan, Tetrastichus near blastophagi (Ashmead), and Aprostocetus diplosidis Crawford. E. popa and A. diplosidis were ectoparasitic on the midge host in sorghum spikelets, while T. near venustus fed both externally and internally. Members of the parasitoid complex oviposited and developed to adults in spikelets containing 1- to 18-day-old immature midges, which corresponded to larval and pupal stages of midges. Most parasitoids developed from midges parasitized as mid-stage larvae. Developmental time from egg to adult emergence ranged from 7 …
Day-Degree Methods For Pest Management, Kenneth P. Pruess
Day-Degree Methods For Pest Management, Kenneth P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Recommendations are made for reporting day-degree methods which may have practical applications. Standardized thresholds (40, 50, and 60°F, or 5, 10, and 15°C) should be used. Day-degrees may be either sine wave approximations or exact units determined by instrumentation. Methods are proposed for converting current day-degree models to standardized thresholds and, ultimately, to actual day-degrees.
Aspects Of The Biology Of The Red Drum, Sciaenops Ocellatus, In Mississippi, Robin M. Overstreet
Aspects Of The Biology Of The Red Drum, Sciaenops Ocellatus, In Mississippi, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Several hundred specimens of the red drum from Mississippi were critically assessed. Regression equations for standard-length (SL) versus total-length differed between males and females and between small and large members of the same sex. Asingle regression line represented the weight-SL relationship for males with females. For condition coefficients to be helpful, fish had to be grouped at least by sex, season, and length or stage of maturity. By 12 months of age, most fish were about 30 to 32 cm SL and their distribution ranged throughout Mississippi Sound rather than being restricted to inshore bayou and marsh habitats like younger …
Aspects Of The Biology Of The Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, In Mississippi, Robin M. Overstreet
Aspects Of The Biology Of The Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, In Mississippi, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
About 3,000 specimens of the spotted seatrout from Mississippi Sound and adjacent water grouped by males and females had a nearly identical standard Iength (SL) versus total length (TL) relationship, although the equation for males in winter differed from that for those in other seasons. When investigating the SL-weight relationship, some differences occurred both among seasons and between sexes. Therefore, condition coefficients (K) were calculated to compare male and female groups according to their length and state of maturation on a seasonal basis. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) tended to increase with fish length, with relatively high values occurring in winter …

Macrophages Contain At Least Two Myosins, John A. Trotter, Stylianos P. Scordilis, Sarkis S. Margossian
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
A number of motile functions of macrophages are thought to be mediated by myosin. We have observed that myosin from rabbit alveolar macrophages is heterogeneous with respect to its 20 kDa light chain: two species of 20 kDa light chain are identified by one-dimensional and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, in a ratio of 2:1. Native myosin, analyzed on non-denaturing gels, is also composed of two species, in a ratio of 2:1. These results indicate that macrophages contain at least two different myosins, which might have different physiological functions.
