Bats: Winged Maestros Of The Night, Patricia W. Freeman Apr 1983

Bats: Winged Maestros Of The Night, Patricia W. Freeman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Most people are both revolted and fascinated by bats. Revolted because, like snakes, bats are assumed to be dangerous, and fascinated because they have bizarre faces and are rarely seen. Bats don't come in contact with humans often because we are active during the day and most bats are active only at night. Also, bats fly and would not be that easy to observe even if they did come out in the day. There are nearly four thousand species of mammals on earth, and nearly one thousand of these are bats. Next to rodents, bats are the most abundant mammals.

Effects Of Weeds On The Diversity And Abundance Of Insects In Soybeans, Mark D. Shelton, C. R. Edwards Apr 1983

Effects Of Weeds On The Diversity And Abundance Of Insects In Soybeans, Mark D. Shelton, C. R. Edwards

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

Sweep-net sampling and pitfall trapping were used to survey insects in weedy and weed-free soybean habitats. Weedy soybean habitats consisted of (1) grassy soybeans; (2) soybeans with broadleaf weeds; and (3) soybeans with broadleaf weeds and grasses. Insect species diversity was greater in weedy soybean habitats than in weed-free soybeans. Greatest diversity of species occurred in the mixed-weed soybean habitat. The most important phytophagous insect on soybeans in Indiana, the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant, was most abundant in weed-free soybeans. Predators were most ahundant in weedy soybeans. Coleomegilla maculata (DeGeer) was most abundant in weedy soybean habitats, whereas …

Belt Filter Press Optimization With The Use Of Drainage Measurement, Jeffrey E. Farnsworth Apr 1983

Belt Filter Press Optimization With The Use Of Drainage Measurement, Jeffrey E. Farnsworth

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this project is to determine if paper machine freeness meters can be applied to belt filter presses, so as to control the dosage rate of the polymer addition. Currently polymer dosage rates are set for the high demand loads and therefore, more polymer is used than is needed at the low demand loads. With the cost and use of chemical polymers increasing, the application of a control means to regulate polymer dose as required, should provide substantial savings in conditioning costs.

This study wants to show that a specific resistance tester is sensitive enough to pick up …

Simulation Of Heterosis Effects On Costs Of Pork Production, G. L. Bennett, M. W. Tess, G. E. Dickerson, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Individual plus maternal heterotic effects on swine production were simulated with a bioeconomic model by changing performance levels of eight traits: -8 d in age at puberty, +3% in conception rate, +.94 in pigs born/litter, +.035 kg in pig birth weight, +2.05 Mcal•sow-1•d -1 in maximum milk output, +8% in preweaning survival, +10.8% in protein growth rate and +17.3% in fat growth rate. Associated heterosis simulated for other traits, such as weaning weights and postweaning gain/feed, was similar to experimental results. Effects of heterosis on biological (feed Mcal/kg) and economic ($/kg) costs were evaluated by simulating two- and …

Comparison Of Hybrid Grass Carp And Grass Carp, Janine L. Callahan Apr 1983

Comparison Of Hybrid Grass Carp And Grass Carp, Janine L. Callahan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The hybrid grass carp, a cross between the male bighead carp (Hypothalmichthys nobilis) and the female grass carp (Ctenopharyngodonidella), was first produced in the United States in 1979 for biocontrol purposes. Unlike the fish produced in 1979 and 1980, the hybrid grass carp spawned in 1981 were assumed to be uniform, triploid, and to have growth and feeding rates comparable to those of grass carp. A comparison study to determine differences in the morphology of the 1979, 1980, and 1981 hybrid grass carp revealed that the hybrid grass carp spawned in 1981 have a longer relative gut length, fewer deformities …

Aspects Of The Biology Of Aeromonas Hydrophilia With Respect To The Striped Mullet, Mugil Cephalus L. In The St. Johns River, Gerald E. Fensch

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The aspects of the biology of Aeromonas hydrophila with respect to a striped mullet (Mugil cephalus L.0 nursery were examined. A. hydrophila density in the natural water was found to be strongly correlated with turbidity and weakly correlated with water temperature. No correlations were found between A. hydrophila density and water depth, dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, specific conductivity, or phytoplankton chlorophyll concentration. A. hydrophila density/g dry weight of stomach content were found to be correlated with chlorophyll concentration/g dry weight stomach content. The survivability of striped mullet after capture was found to be primarily related to stress. Stressed striped …

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Levels In The Ocean Scallop (Placopecten Magellanicus) Gmelin From The Philadelphia Sewage Sludge Disposal Site, Guy Jeffrey Hall

OES Theses and Dissertations

Ocean Scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) were sampled from stations in and around the Philadelphia Disposal Site. Each sample was dissected and aliquots of adductor muscle and reproductive tissue were chemically extracted for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). A perchlorinated procedure outlined by Diosady et al., 1972, Aromour, 1973 and Crist et al., 1977 was employed to increase detection levels and simplify quantitation of PCBs. PCB levels were reported in dry weight and lipid weight of both adductor muscle and reproductive tissue. Findings indicated residual levels or PCB/lipid weight increased as lipid levels decreased in both tissue types. Levels detected in all adductor muscle …

Seasonal Effects On Blood Pressure, David C. Dotson Apr 1983

Seasonal Effects On Blood Pressure, David C. Dotson

The relationship of seasons and blood pressure was investigated. The individuals in the sample groups were of two types: normal individuals and individuals who have been diagnosed as hypertensives and under medical supervision. This was a seasonal study? measurements were taken during midsummer and early fall, 1979. Factors constituting the variable for individual differences included: sex, age, genetic factors, diet, general body build and managerial vs, laborer workload.

Individual differences were controlled by use of a randomized complete block design with each individual constituting a block. Season was the treatment factor, and individual was the blocking factor. Measurements were taken …

A Quantitative Study Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In An Irregularly Flooded Salt Marsh, Smith Island, Virginia, Leon L. Robert Jr. Apr 1983

A Quantitative Study Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In An Irregularly Flooded Salt Marsh, Smith Island, Virginia, Leon L. Robert Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Little is known about the aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure in coastal salt marshes. This study investigated the aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure in a coastal Virginia salt marsh. Sixteen samples were taken weekly from two different sites on Smith Island, Virginia, from April to mid-October 1982. Bimonthly samples were taken during the months March and November due to low density of organisms and reduced growth rates at these times.

A total of 46 taxa were collected with 17 occurring regularly, indicating a relatively diverse fauna. Wide fluctuations in the physical parameters were observed; however, temporal changes in the macroinvertebrate community cannot …

Evaluation Of The Status Of Texanocotyle Pogoniae And Laterocotyle Padreinsulae (Trematoda: Aspidogastridae), Sherman S. Hendrix, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Simpson and McGraw (1979, Southwest. Nat. 24: 557-562) erected two genera for two new species of aspidogastrid trematodes infecting the black drum, Pogonias cromis (Linnaeus), along the Texan Gulf of Mexico coast. Examination of holotypes and paratypes of each reveals that the two species have been described previously and that the genera are invalid.

An Evaluation Of Small Rodents In Four Dismal Swamp Plant Communities, F. Elizabeth Breidling, Frank P. Day Jr., Robert K. Rose Apr 1983

An Evaluation Of Small Rodents In Four Dismal Swamp Plant Communities, F. Elizabeth Breidling, Frank P. Day Jr., Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Diversity and density of small rodents in the Dismal Swamp are believed to be low. Reasons for this may be excessive predation, heavy interspecific pressure from large rodents, lack of suitable habitat, low food availability or flooding.

Rodent populations were evaluated using live-traps and pitfall traps in four different Dismal Swamp plant communities. Habitat was compared on the basis of phytomass studies previously reported. Flood levels were recorded during live-trapping sessions. Mast from trees was collected in modified mast collectors, and fed to Peromyscus leucopus in the laboratory.

Only two small rodent species were captured: Ochrotomys nuttalli and Peromyscus leucopus …

Impact Of The Law Of The Sea Treaty On The Soviet Fishing Industry, Gary Lee Roemmich Apr 1983

Impact Of The Law Of The Sea Treaty On The Soviet Fishing Industry, Gary Lee Roemmich

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The signing of the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Treaty was the maturation of an idea that was born thirty-six years ago. That treaty placed into effect the 200 mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A universal 200 mile EEZ could be a death knell for the high-seas fishing fleets we know today as the majority of the major fishing grounds lie within 200 miles of the coast. The Soviet Union presently has the largest fishing fleet in the world and will perhaps feel the largest impact from the treaty signing. This paper intends to evaluate …

Variability For Traits Used To Estimate Silage Quality In Forage Sorghum Hybrids, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. Britton

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The variation among 49 F1 forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] hybrids from a 7 X 7 cross-classified design was explored in 1979 and 1980 for the following silage traits: dry matter (DM), crude protein, in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, ammonia, lactate, and Brix of the juice from fresh stalks. Wider ranges generally were found for male than for female parental means. Means for most traits were significantly different among entries. Significant differences among hybrid means over males and over females were found for only DM, IVDMD, and …

Investigation Of The Substrate Binding Site Of Nad Glycohydrolase In Human Seminal Plasma, Sau C. Cheung Apr 1983

Investigation Of The Substrate Binding Site Of Nad Glycohydrolase In Human Seminal Plasma, Sau C. Cheung

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADase) (E.C. 3.2.2.5) from human seminal plasma (HSP) was partially purified through a multistep purification procedure, including affinity chromatography on Amicon Red Matrex Gel A. The NADase activity was assayed by a fluorometric method with nicotinamide 1,N6 -ethenoadenine dinucleotide as the substrate. The enzymatic cleavage of etheno-NAD by NADase was accompanied by an eight-fold increase in fluorescence. This large increase in fluorescence provided a sensitive way to follow the rate of etheno-NAD hydrolysis.

NADase was found to be less specific for the purine moiety of NAD, since etheno-NAD was accepted as a substrate. The enzyme …

Clutch Size In The Eastern Kingbird: Factors Affecting Nestling Survival, Michael T. Murphy Apr 1983

Clutch Size In The Eastern Kingbird: Factors Affecting Nestling Survival, Michael T. Murphy

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Observational and experimental procedures were used to evaluate the potential importance of brood size and weather on the evolution of clutch size in the Eastern Kingbird. Modal clutch size was three eggs, yet broods of four were most productive. Nestling size varied inversely with brood size, so that "nestling quality" was lower in broods of four than in broods of three. Asymptotic weight of nestlings in broods of three was directly and significantly correlated with ambient air temperature, followed by hatch order. Because larger broods were being fed during a period of relatively cool and wet weather, the effects of …

The Effect Of Indoleacetic Acid And Related Chemicals On Growth Patterns Of Decapitated Bean Plants, Lewis V. Buchanan Apr 1983

The Effect Of Indoleacetic Acid And Related Chemicals On Growth Patterns Of Decapitated Bean Plants, Lewis V. Buchanan

Masters Theses

Bean plants were used to study effects of IAA and related chemicals on plant growth patterns. Plant apical growth tips were removed, eliminating apical donimance. Decapitated plants were treated in experimental groups with IAA, tryptophan, 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid, serotonin, and melatonin. Two other groups served as controls, one cut, and one uncut.

Growth measurements were taken to determine if the treatments could effectively restore apical dominance. Cut control plants showed a loss of apical dominance, with decreased apical growth, and release of inhibition of axillary growth, when compared to the uncut group.

Tryptophan and meltonin treatments restored little or no …

Genetic And Environmental Determinants Of Wing Polymorphism In The Waterstrider Limnoporus Canaliculatus, Anthony J. Zera, David J. Innes, Margaret E. Saks Mar 1983

Genetic And Environmental Determinants Of Wing Polymorphism In The Waterstrider Limnoporus Canaliculatus, Anthony J. Zera, David J. Innes, Margaret E. Saks

Anthony Zera Publications

Wing polymorphism commonly occurs in many insects, especially species of Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Homoptera, and Hemiptera (Harrison, 1980). The polymorphism consists of discrete differences in wing length with morphs exhibiting fully developed, reduced, or totally absent wings. In addition to differences in wing length, morphs often differ in a number of other characteristics such as degree of flight muscle development, duration of nymphal development, time to first reproduction, fertility and diapause (Anderson, 1973; Vepsäläinen, 1978; Harrison, 1980).

Wing polymorphism is an attractive system for investigating the evolution of dispersal in natural populations (Vepsäläinen, 1978; Denno and Grissell, 1979; Harrison, 1980). A …

Evidence For Hydrated Spermidine-Calf Thymus Dna Toruses Organized By Circumferential Dna Wrapping, Kenneth A. Marx, George C. Ruben Mar 1983

Evidence For Hydrated Spermidine-Calf Thymus Dna Toruses Organized By Circumferential Dna Wrapping, Kenneth A. Marx, George C. Ruben

Dartmouth Scholarship

In spermidine-condensed calf thymus DNA preparations, torus–shaped condensates were shown by transmission electron microscopy to exist under the hydrated conditions of the freeze fracture experiment. Using extremely low Pt metal deposition levels (9 A Pt/C) high–contrast replicas of the spermidine–DNA toruses were obtained that showed circumferential wrapping of single DNA double helix–size surface fibres. Stereoscopic analysis of high magnification stereomicrographs established some details of the three-dimensional organization of two DNA double helix sections winding circumferentially on the inner surface of one such torus. These measurements demonstrate the usefulness of stereoscopic analysis of these high macromolecular organization magnification. Measurements on a …

Comparison Of Old Field Succession On A Tallgrass Prairie And A Nebraska Sandhills Prairie, Mary Bomberger Brown, Shelly L. Shields, A. Tyrone Harrsion, Kathleen H. Keeler Mar 1983

Comparison Of Old Field Succession On A Tallgrass Prairie And A Nebraska Sandhills Prairie, Mary Bomberger Brown, Shelly L. Shields, A. Tyrone Harrsion, Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Long held to be reasonably well understood, the process of ecological succession has recently come under attack. The predictability of successional changes has been doubted (Walker 1970), the mechanism of species replacement has been questioned (Connell and Slatyer 1977), and the reality of steady-state (climax) challenged (Botkin and Sobel 1975, Connell and Slatyer 1977, Connell 1978). In particular, several communities are presently recognized as having "cyclic succession" (Ricklefs 1973), in which the process is continually repeating. Such communities include heaths (Watt 1947), prairie pot-hole marshes (Vander Valk and Davis 1978), spruce-fir forests (Sprugel 1976, Sprugel and Bormann 1981), and intertidal …

A Winter Roadside Survey Of Hawks In Eastern Nemaha County, Nebraska, Steve Shupe, Robert Collins Mar 1983

A Winter Roadside Survey Of Hawks In Eastern Nemaha County, Nebraska, Steve Shupe, Robert Collins

Nebraska Bird Review

During the winters of 1980-81 and 1981-82 roadside surveys of hawks were conducted on 76 square miles (196.8 square kilometers) of Nemaha County, Nebraska. Forty surveys were conducted each winter to acquire baseline data on distribution and populations. Ten species were observed, with the Red-tailed Hawk (49.7%) and the American Kestrel (21.5%) comprising more than 70%of all sightings. Population estimates for each species were determined by using square mile extrapolation and the bounded count method. Intervals of confidence were calculated in an attempt to determine upper and lower winter population limits.

The Regional Acceleratory Phenomenon: A Review, Harold M. Frost Mar 1983

The Regional Acceleratory Phenomenon: A Review, Harold M. Frost

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) is a complex reaction of mammalian tissues to diverse noxious stimuli. The phenomenon occurs regionally in the anatomical sense, involves both soft and hard tissues, and is characterized by an acceleration and domination of most ongoing normal vital tissue processes. It may represent an "SOS" mechanism which evolved to potentiate tissue healing and local tissue defensive reactions. When a RAP is obtunded, retarded healing and lowered resistance to infection and mechanical abuse may ensue. When ignored in experimental design, the phenomenon can seriously perturb studies of metabolic bone disease and of the effects of mechanical, …

Current Concepts In Otitis Media, Michael M. Paparella Mar 1983

Current Concepts In Otitis Media, Michael M. Paparella

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Otitis media continues to be a common and disabling problem which has become, in recent years, a fertile area for research. Based on studies in animals and humans, otitis media is classified into four groups: acute purulent otitis media (POM), serous otitis media (SOM), and mucoid or secretory otitis media (MOM). Together, these are referred to as otitis media with effusion (OME). The types can overlap and evolve into another type to become chronic otitis media and mastoiditis, characterized by the presence of granulation tissue or cholesteatoma. The biochemistry, microbiology, and pathology as well as clinical features of the disease …
