Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center
Maine History & Policy Development
Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.

Science-Based Organic Farming 2006: Toward Local And Secure Food Systems, Charles A. Francis, Katja Koehler-Cole, Twyla Hansen, Peter Skelton
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Organic farming includes growing food and fiber—animals, agronomic crops, horticultural fruits and vegetables, related products—as one dynamic and rapidly evolving component of our complex U.S. food system. Even as more farmers are moving toward organic certification and participation in an environmentally sound and economically lucrative market, questions arise about the long-term social impacts and sustainability of a set of practices that has gone from a movement to an industry. Consolidations in the organic trade have brought multinational corporations to the table, as they have observed a grassroots activity that has grown by 20% per year for the past two decades, …

Five Year Issue Based Review, September 18 – 21, 2006, University Of Nebraska–Lincoln Southeast Research & Extension Center
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
This Five Year District Program Review is issue based and follows the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources guidelines for Research and Extension Centers revised in 2000 (see Section 7a). As the guidelines indicate, the review focuses on the current and evolving issues that effect this District and to some extent contiguous regions. The identification of external issues was program independent and heavily dependent on clientele input. The IANR Strategic Plan and the Extension Action Team Plans are considered a broad perspective of the issues facing Nebraskans. The District review considers unique regional challenges. The program plans are aligned with …
The Effects Of Remnant Seed Source Size On Plant Performance In A Prairie Restoration, William L. Stewart
The Effects Of Remnant Seed Source Size On Plant Performance In A Prairie Restoration, William L. Stewart
Masters Theses
Tallgrass prairies have been drastically reduced to a few remnant areas that are both small and isolated. As a result, species within these areas may be exposed to a significant level of inbreeding depression and loss in genetic diversity, which can cause an overall loss of fitness in the population, increasing the chance of local extinction. In many cases, prairie restorations rely on seed collections from these small, isolated populations, which may lead to many of the same problems in the restored areas. This study specifically addressed the question: Does the dependence on seed collections from small, isolated remnants lead …

Linking Pastoralists And Exporters In A Livestock Marketing Chain: Recent Experiences From Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Getachew Gebru, Seyoum Tezera
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
The Boran of southern Ethiopia have been traditionally viewed as unwilling or unable to engage in large scale, commercialized livestock trade. Here we report on the creation of a new livestock marketing chain from the Borana Plateau to export outlets largely serving the Gulf States. Since 2003 various meetings and exchange tours were organized by collaborating agencies and PARIMA to directly link pastoral producers with livestock exporters and policy makers. This occurred against a backdrop of growing export demand for small ruminants, rapid development of private export industry, formation of well-trained pastoral marketing groups (often dominated by women), and provision …

Synthesis Of Design Guidelines And Experimental Data For Water Quality Function In Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Susan Buffler, Craig Johnson, John Nicholson, Nancy Mesner
Synthesis Of Design Guidelines And Experimental Data For Water Quality Function In Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Susan Buffler, Craig Johnson, John Nicholson, Nancy Mesner
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Currently, there is no scientific literature examining appropriate riparian buffer widths for water quality for streams on private agriculturally dominated lands in arid regions of the Intermountain West. The initial step in this research effort was a review of buffer research as documented in the literature in other physiographic regions of the United States. Research findings on appropriate buffer widths for water quality parameters were synthesized using a matrix format. Differences between arid and non-arid landscape characteristics, soil, topography, vegetation, climate and hydrology and their effect on buffers for water quality were also researched. The combined research findings in this …

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture
Loss of prime farmland is a serious concern in the United States and around the globe. With rapid urban population increases, the activities and perceived needs of concentrated groups of people result in the swallowing of some of the most fertile lands in this country. Today we have just under 2 acres of productive farmland per person in the United States. Given the current population growth rate due to births and immigration, plus the present rate of farmland loss, World Watch Institute estimates that we will have about 0.6 acres or one-third as much farmland available per person by 2055--a …
Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff
Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff
Biology Faculty Research
How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …

The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana In Closed Microalgal-Based Microcosms (Biospheres), Rachel L. Yung, Mark A. Gouthro, James R. Rosowski
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three experimental variables on the stability and fecundity of a brine-shrimp community in a closed, micro algal-based microcosm. Xenic microalgal cultures and brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana Kellogg) in 300-cc acrylic spheres (referred to as biospheres or microcosms) were subjected to three experimental variables: (1) the culture volume (150 ml or 250 ml), (2) presence or absence of daily culture mixing (sphere rotation), and (3) a microcosm atmosphere that was either closed or open to the surrounding atmosphere. Each sphere started with 200 brine shrimp cysts and the microalga …
Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen
Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen
Cornhusker Economics
During a conference highlighting "sustainable Communities," Margaret Thomas presented a paper based upon a 1994 research project designed to explore economic development strategies that would increase local prosperity and also protect the environment and protect natural resources. She described the economy and ecology as two sides of the same coin and proposed reconsidering human systems and industrial systems in the light of these two natural laws: 1) resources are to be used no faster than they are replenished, and 2) matter is ultimately recycled for reuse in biological or physical systems.

Environmental Mediation: An Assessment And Case Study Of The Logan Canyon Highway Controversy, Jared Glenn Parkinson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
For a little more than twenty years, alternative methods of dispute management have been employed to address various environmental conflicts in order to avoid the more traditional method of litigation. Mediation is a voluntary process which involves face-to-face negotiation among parties and the use of a neutral third-party negotiator. Environmental mediation has helped manage disputes related to land use, natural resource management, use of public lands, water resources, energy development, air quality and toxins (Bingham 1986).
