How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews
How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This manuscript examines how to help more people learn to float because this skill is taking a much more central role in the latest drowning prevention advice in the UK. In 2017 BBC Radio Two show presenter, Simon Mayo, declared that he ‘could not float.’ Many persons in the UK identified with this claim. Despite having been an activity in many traditional swimming lessons floating is not a straight-forward skill for all to master. It requires a high degree of personal trust to have developed in the water. I discuss what learning to float fundamentally entails based on recent publications …

© The Author(s) 2018. There is irrefutable evidence that regular participation in physical activity is favorably associated with numerous positive health outcomes, including cognitive function. Emerging work suggests that perceived physical activity, independent of actual physical activity behavior, is inversely associated with mortality risk. In this study, we evaluate whether perceived physical activity, independent of actual physical activity, is associated with cognitive function, a robust indicator of mortality risk. Data from the cross-sectional 1999–2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were employed (N = 2352; 60+ years of age). Actual physical activity was assessed via a validated survey. Perceived physical …

The Ed O’Bannon case (O’Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2015) has brought student-athlete compensation to the national spotlight. While the NCAA continues to defend its policy of amateurism, the time for college athlete compensation may soon become a reality (NCAA Division I Manual, 2019). Recent college athlete compensation models have explored revenue sharing models similar to that of professional sports leagues, although previous research failed to develop a compensation model for athletes in sports beyond basketball and football (Huma & Staurowsky, 2013). The current research argues for a more applied, market-economy compensation model to offer fair compensation to collegiate …

According to the World Health Organization, drowning fatalities are a neglected public health issue ranked as the third most frequent cause of unintentional death by injury. Data used to record drowning incidents are acknowledged as inaccurate. Recommendations on drowning prevention based on these data are currently not informed by accurate, detailed and reliable evidence. Two modifications to current practice are proposed: 1) an Aquatic Incident Report needs to be developed as an extension of the current workplace incident report to prompt for information commonly not included in current drowning reports; and 2) National Water Safety Plans should be modified to …

Accumulation of dysfunctional and damaged cellular proteins and organelles occursduring aging, resulting in a disruption of cellular homeostasis and progressive degen-eration and increases the risk of cell death. Moderating the accrual of these defunctcomponents is likely a key in the promotion of longevity. While exercise is knownto promote healthy aging and mitigate age‐related pathologies, the molecular under-pinnings of this phenomenon remain largely unclear. However, recent evidencessuggest that exercise modulates the proteome. Similarly, caloric restriction (CR), aknown promoter of lifespan, is understood to augment intracellular protein quality.Autophagy is an evolutionary conserved recycling pathway responsible for thedegradation, then turnover of cellular proteins …
