Bulletin No. 189 - Ridding The Land Of Wild Morning Glory, George Stewart, D. W. Pittman Aug 1924

Bulletin No. 189 - Ridding The Land Of Wild Morning Glory, George Stewart, D. W. Pittman

UAES Bulletins

"Morning glory" is the common name for one of the worst weeds found in Utah. On account of its general resemblance to a cultivated plant spoken of as morning glory, the weed is frequently and more correctly known as the "wild morning glory." Since everyone who handles farm land knows the plant, a description of it is unnecessary. It may not be amiss, however, to mention that the name probably comes from the fact that the showy, funnel-shaped flowers are open only in the morning, being folded within the sepals after midday or earlier in hot, dry weather.

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel Jun 1924

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel

Bachelors’ Theses

The theories concerning the origin of life on this planet have been many and varied all down the ages. In the prescientific ages, if we may be allowed to designate those years as such, before science was as exacting and searching sit is now, practically all the theories advanced by the philosophers at the time have since been proven to be fallacies and all of them save one, the Theory of Spontaneous Generation have been discarded into the limbo of mistaken notions.

Vestigial Pleometrosis In The North American Polistes Pallipes Lepeletier, Joseph Bequaert

In the October-December, 1919, issue of this BULLETIN my esteemed friend, Mr. Wm. T. Davis, has published some observations of the common American social wasps, a most welcome addition to the scanty literature of the subject in America. Among other interesting points, he relates several cases in which two, three, or four queens of the common Eastern Polistes pallipes Lepeletier ( = metrica Say; variatus Say) had worked together in establishing a new colony, though in this as in other species of Polistes each queen as a rule starts her nest alone.

The Psychology Of Senescence: An Introductory Study, Charles W. St. John Jun 1912

The Psychology Of Senescence: An Introductory Study, Charles W. St. John

Historical Dissertations & Theses

The following biographical studies have been made with the purpose of showing through concrete cases some aspects of mental decline in senescence. To the objection that each of these cases follows a course in a degree divergent from that of normal mental decline, the reply is that a study of these striking instanced, we believe, afford a more ready insight into the underlying phenomena than would a similar one which deals with average or typical cases. The significance of exceptional cases should not be underestimated. Certain peculiar conditions have been present which have modified the typical phenomena, but after due …

Science And Culture, Charles E. Bessey Jul 1896

Science And Culture, Charles E. Bessey

Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity

It is with peculiar pleasure that I stand before this new department of Natural Science Instruction, and I deem it a great honor that you have asked me to preside over its deliberations. It is an important sign of the times that such a department as this should have been organized by the scientific men of the country. It is significant of a broader view of the work of scientific men that we find so many here to-day to take part in the first meeting of a department which has for its object the discussion of questions pertaining to the …

On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman Jul 1892

On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Some ten years or more ago, on first attempting to teach English Literature historically, I found my attention peculiarly drawn to the differences of form between the sentences of More, Hooker, Lyly, and other early prosaists, and of approved stylists in our own age. Here was clearly an organic and sustained development, yet without scientific recognition of a single fact or principle of change. It seemed that something might easily be done towards determining the course of an evolution so evident and remarkable. But I had, or believed I had, no leisure for serious study of the subject, and found …
