Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty
Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty
Student Work
Aerobic performance is affected by a number of physiological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors (Astrand, 1977). Among the many physiological factors nutrition plays an important part. However, when considering what constitutes a balanced diet, nutritionists express varying opinions as to what percentage of protein, fat and carbohydrate should be included for the general populace and the athlete. Mayer and Bullen (1960) in their review of literature on nutrition and athletic performance concluded a balanced diet is adequate for the athlete.
The Effects Of Pre And Postnatal Gonadal Hormone Administration On The Adult Aggressive-Target Biting In Female Mice, David D. Smith
The Effects Of Pre And Postnatal Gonadal Hormone Administration On The Adult Aggressive-Target Biting In Female Mice, David D. Smith
Masters Theses
Introduction
It is now well established that androgens and estrogens are intricately involved in influencing the sexual differentiation of the brain, as well as male and female differences of aggressiveness. Evidence is accumulating which indicates that these steroid hormones influence the pattern of nervous connection and organization developing in utero and in the early postnatal period.
To more completely link testosterone's involvement with aggressive behavior, one must examine the voluminous literature which links testosterone with developing neonatal correlates of aggression as well as with adult capacity to display aggressive behavior. In most species the male is more aggressive than the …
Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale
Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Three experienced pigeons were exposed to at least ten consecutive 100-min sessions on each of three food-reinforced fixed-interval (FI) schedules: FI 50-sec, FI 100-sec and FI 200-sec. Water was freely available. Drinking was largely confined to the first third of each fixed interval, and the mean sessional water intake was directly related to the food-reinforcement rate for each animal. The animals drank very quickly, i.e., 3-4 ml/sec, but the drinking bouts were brief, i.e., 0.8-1.4 sec, and infrequent, i.e., 2-5/hr. The parameters describing concurrent drinking in the pigeon are strikingly different from those describing rats’ drinking under similar reinforcement schedules, …

Search Image Formation In The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil
Search Image Formation In The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.
Investigations On Improvement Of Acceptability And Evaluation Of The Nutritive Value Of Processed Cabbage And Its Effects On The Tumorigenicity In Mice, Chareonsri Srisangnam
Investigations On Improvement Of Acceptability And Evaluation Of The Nutritive Value Of Processed Cabbage And Its Effects On The Tumorigenicity In Mice, Chareonsri Srisangnam
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objectives of this investigation have been to study the acceptability and nutritive value of processed cabbage and to elucidate the effects of chronic administration of cabbage on the activity of a colon tumorigen, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). The organoleptic unacceptability of cabbage in spite of its high nutritional and economic values governed the choice of this cruciferous vegetable for this work.
Cabbage samples were blanched with steam, chemical solutions, and microwaves. Microwave blanching led to a "burnt spot" effect and to a relatively greater loss in weight of the vegetable. Blanching in solution involved boiling of cabbage with a chemical solution …

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech
Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The wolf (Canis lupus) is a wide-ranging social carnivore with a complex spatial organization (MECH, 1972; 1973). The precise manner in which this organization is maintained is unknown, but territory advertisement using olfactory and acoustic modes seems to be involved.
The acoustic mode includes primarily howling. Within a wolf pack, howling may be useful to reassemble separated members (MECH, 1966; THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967), and may communicate information on individual identity, location, and other behavioral and environmental contingencies (THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967). Between packs, however, howling may serve to advertise territory, communicating the locations of packs and thus …

Interacting Prey Characteristic Effects On Kestrel Predatory Behavior, Frederick F. Knowlton, Leonard F. Ruggiero, Carl D. Cheney
Interacting Prey Characteristic Effects On Kestrel Predatory Behavior, Frederick F. Knowlton, Leonard F. Ruggiero, Carl D. Cheney
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Prey selection was assessed based on 116 experimental trials in which six kestrels were presented pairs of mice. Independent variables included pelage color (black and white), morphology (familiar and unfamiliar), and movement (aberrant, normal, and none). Each prey item represented a combination of three treatments, i.e., one per variable. In general, black pelage was preferred to white and familiar morphology was preferred to unfamiliar. An important interaction occurred between movement and morphology. Kestrel selection was low for moving unfamiliar prey but high for nonmoving unfamiliar prey. The highest rates of attack were elicited by moving familiar prey. It was concluded …

Saint Thomas Aquinas' Division Of The Sciences, Marvin E. Kanne
Saint Thomas Aquinas' Division Of The Sciences, Marvin E. Kanne
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Saint Thomas Aquinas holds that scientific knowledge is attained when observable phenomena and their properties are accounted for in terms of their relations to their causes. On establishing the divisions of the sciences, Aquinas follows the threefold division of the speculative sciences as proposed by Aristotle and handed on to the Middle Ages by Boethius: natural philosophy, mathematics, and theology. Each science is defined by its subject matter and by its method of procedure.
While Aquinas followed the teachings of Boethius on this point, he makes significant additions and alterations. Thus in his analysis Aquinas focuses his attention on the …
On The Causal Irreducibility Of Natural Function Statements, Eric Russert Kraemer
On The Causal Irreducibility Of Natural Function Statements, Eric Russert Kraemer
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
One topic of interest to a number of philosophers of science is whether functional explanation can be reduced to some other kind of explanation, such as causal explanation. Some philosophers have tried to reduce talk of natural functions to talk of causes. I here examine some such attempts and try to provide, in addition to the traditional counter-examples, an argument as to why such reductions should fail. Certain parallels are drawn between attributions of natural functions to parts of organisms and attributions of propositional attitudes to persons.
The Realizing Character Of The Social Sciences, Andrew Larkin
The Realizing Character Of The Social Sciences, Andrew Larkin
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Because of successful construction of theories in the mathematical, physical, and biological sciences, and because of their unchallenged technological usefulness, the philosophy of science has concentrated on the formal and epistemological aspects of sciences. However, the less formal social sciences have had a greater impact on society. This realizing character of the sciences, i.e., their influence on society through policy (in the case of the social sciences), has been inadequately studied. In this paper the normative character of the social sciences is seen from the perspective of realization. Norms as internal and external criteria, which are entailed by realization, are …
Are Psychophysical Models Of Behavior Possible?, Marianne Shaw
Are Psychophysical Models Of Behavior Possible?, Marianne Shaw
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In "The Correspondence Hypothesis," (Philosophical Review), Bruce Goldberg argues that the correspondence hypothesis is an illusion because "B's having the same thought as A" does not entail "B's having the same set of mental or neurophysiological properties, i.e., brain state or process, as A." If Goldberg is correct, a telling blow has been struck against the construction of information processing and psycho linguistic models created with the intention of later incorporation into neurophysiological models of brain functioning.
However, while Goldberg is correct in pointing out that two individuals can be said to have the same thought and yet …
Kant's Subjectivist Theory Of Space, Mark C. Timmons
Kant's Subjectivist Theory Of Space, Mark C. Timmons
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In his 1780 Kritik der Reinen Vernunft, Kant rejects those objectivist views of space according to which space belongs to the order of things in themselves, either as itself a thing in itself (Newton), or reducible to properties of things in themselves (Leibniz), and argues for a subjectivist alternative. What this subjectivist view comes to is unclear. This paper provides an analysis of a few key passages from the Kritik in an attempt to reconstruct Kant's doctrine of space.
Use Of The Autobiography For Personal Development And As An Investigative Technique, Mark W. Ware
Use Of The Autobiography For Personal Development And As An Investigative Technique, Mark W. Ware
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Theory and previous research indicated that an autobiographical project should facilitate personal development and the acquisition of an investigative technique. Twelve students from classes in Personality and History/Systems of Psychology participated in the study by writing autobiographical papers as one option for a course project and by completing an evaluation form. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the effectiveness of the autobiography for personal development and as an investigative method were obtained. Data from both sources supported the use of an autobiographical project for acquiring and clarifying information about one's self and his/her relationships to others. Student reactions also indicated that …

Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
What has always fascinated me is an historical account that ends triumphantly but whose start-to-finish is riddled with reversals and hostile obstacles and haunted by anguishing circumstances. The history of "humanities in medical education- the past ten years" in the United States is just such a story. In the last ten years there has been a continually wider acceptance of humanities in United States medical schools, i.e., a growing number of schools introducing the humanities, a growth in the quality and scope of programs being offered, and a greater acceptance of the humanities as an integral part of the medical …
