G89-928 Parent Checklist For Choosing Day Care, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Choosing appropriate child care can be confusing. Here are some things to consider in selecting the best care for your child.
What Is Good Day Care?
Good day care requires three important things: a caregiver who provides your child with care and guidance and who works with you and your family to made sure your child grows and learns in the best way possible; a setting that keeps your child safe and healthy; activities suited to your child's stage of growth that help the child develop mentally, physically, socially and emotionally.

A Comparison Of Three Populations Of The Plains Pocket Gophers, Geomys Bursarius Illinoensis, In Illinois, Frank P. Wray
A Comparison Of Three Populations Of The Plains Pocket Gophers, Geomys Bursarius Illinoensis, In Illinois, Frank P. Wray
Masters Theses
Morphometric and karyotypic analyses were performed on three Illinois populations of the Plains Pocket Gopher, Geomys bursarius illinoensis, to determine if any differences were present among the populations. Gophers were collected in three localities: 1) Iroquois and Kankakee Counties (IKC); McLean County (MC); and St. Clair and Madison counties (SMC). All three populations had the same kind and number of chromosomes (2n=72, FN=70). External measurements did not differ significantly among the three populations. Multivariate analysis of variance of the cranial characters showed that a significant (P<.05) difference existed in both males, F(78,1825)=1.65, and females, F(78,1961)=1.63, between the three regions. Duncan's multiple range tests of some cranial measurements showed a clinal increase going from east to west.

Lasting Responsiveness Of A Kea (Nestor Notabilis) Toward Its Mirror Image, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond
Lasting Responsiveness Of A Kea (Nestor Notabilis) Toward Its Mirror Image, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
At the San Diego Zoo we had the opportunity of observing the behaviour of a Kea Nestor notabilis toward its mirror image under conditions of constant exposure over a period of 12 months. ... The introduction of the mirrors appears to have had a striking impact on the bird's listless state. Reports from keepers indicated that the Kea's appetite was restored after the introduction of the mirrors, and the animal was generally more active. Incidents of feather pulling were generally reduced in frequency.
Studies Of Learning And Memory In Natural Contexts : Integrating Functional And Mechanistic Approaches To Behavior, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
My purpose in this paper is to describe two research projects that combine experimental psychology and behavioral ecology . The first employs the operant conditioning technology developed by psychologists to test hypotheses arising from ecological studies of foraging animals. The second uses concepts from natural history and ecology to explore the nature and evolution of spatial memory. These two projects demonstrate both the advantages and the challenges of interdisciplinary work.
There are many advantages to combining psychological and biological perspectives on the behavior of animals. But truly interdisciplinary work is rare, mostly because it is so difficult to achieve meaningful …
Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: Ii. Behavioral Efference And The Communication Of Intentions, Alan B. Bond
Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: Ii. Behavioral Efference And The Communication Of Intentions, Alan B. Bond
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
An inference from game-theory models of animal conflict is that adversaries should not inform one another about their level of aggressive motivation. This poses a paradox for the traditional ethological account of graded aggressive displays because it is usually assumed that the adaptive significance of these behavior patterns lies in their making such information available. To resolve the paradox, I propose that communication is only an incidental effect of displays, and that their primary adaptive function is regulation of the intensity of aggressive encounters through positive feedback on aggressive motivation, a process termed "behavioral efference." Evidence in support of this …

Characterization Of Steroid-17,20-Desmolase And 20Α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase From Clostridium Scindens, Amy Elizabeth Krafft
Theses and Dissertations
Clostridium scindens is an obligate anaerobe isolated from the normal intestinal flora of man. It is the only bacterium known at present to synthesize both steroid-17,20-desmolase and 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (ZOα-HSDH). This study was undertaken to characterize these neutral steroid transforming reactions in extracts of C. scindens; to purify and characterize the enzymes responsible for side-chain cleavage and 20α- hydroxysteroid oxidoreduction and to clone the genes encoding these enzymes with a view towards studying the mechanism of induction by steroids in a prokaryotic system. Both enzymes were found to be co-inducible in cells cultured in the presence of 17α-hydroxysteroids. In cell …

Four members of a family, a mother, her two sons, and the mother's second cousin, presented with a history of isolated cataplexy without excessive daytime sleepiness or other symptoms typical of narcolepsy. They were polygraphically monitored during one night followed by a day of multiple nap tests. No subject manifested objective daytime sleepiness as measured by short latencies to sleep onset during daytime naps, and no subject exhibited periods of sleep onset rapid eye movement sleep in either the night or nap recordings. The incidence of isolated cataplexy in this family was traced by history through six generations. We conclude …

Comprehension Of "Absence" By An African Grey Parrot: Learning With Respect To Questions Of Same/Different, Irene M. Pepperberg
Sentience Collection
An African Grey parrot, Alex, learned to report on the absence or presence of similarity and difference between two objects. Alex was shown pairs of objects that were (a) totally dissimilar, (b) identical, or (c) similar or different with respect to one of three attributes (color, shape, or material). In the first two cases, he responded to the respective queries of "What's same?" or "What's different?" with the vocalization "none," and in the third case he responded with the appropriate category label ("color," "shape," or "mah-mah" [matter]). His accuracy was 80.9% to 83.9% for pairs of familiar objects not used …

Insecta Mundi
This is another volume in the extensive series planned on Palearctic Microlepidoptera (including Pyralidae). The expertise of Dr. Diakonoff, particularly in Tortricidae, provides a welcome coverage for the included species. This is especially true for the previously conglomerated assortment of species placed in Glyphipterigidae by E. Meyrick and the fact that until recently this classification was followed by most works on the Palearctic fauna. The previous concept of Glyphipterigidae has been considerably altered in the past decade; where Meyrick had over 1,200 species worldwide in one family, we now have four separate families and part of a fifth family for …

The number of men and women with lower extremity disability is growing {Pollock, Miller, Linnerind, Laughridge, Coleman, and Alexander, 1974). A chief cause of this growth is an increase in the number of accidents damaging the spinal column (Pollock et al., 1974). However, many individuals are also born with these types of disabilities, and one of the causes is a disease termed spina bifida. Spina bifida occurs in about 3 per 1000 live births (Batshaw & Perret, 1981). The spine of children born with this defect is bifida and may be exposed, along with nervous tissue surrounding the area, on …

Other parts of the world, namely Europe and Asia, are out producing the United States. According to Steers & Porter (1987), the U.S. ranked sixth among seven leading industrial nations in productivity increases from 1968-1978. An unhealthy life-style is one factor causing decreased productivity in the U.S. (Cox, Shephard & Corey, 1981). Fitness level, work capacity, mental fatigue and stress are related to life-style and have an impact on productivity (Falkenberg, 1987). It is estimated that two-thirds of all businesses in the U.S. with fifty or more employees offer some type of health promotion program (McLemore & Dolzier, 1987). These …

Water Quality Control: Integrating Beneficial Use and Environmental Protection (Summer Conference, June 1-3)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Protecting water quality is essential to preserve the many beneficial uses of western water resources. This conference addresses the dominant federal requirements in the Clean Water Act, including the important major revisions enacted by Congress in 1987, with special attention to western problems regarding nonpoint source pollution. Developments in groundwater quality regulation are considered, as are selected issues concerning the implications of state and federal water quality regulation for the traditional exercise of water rights.

Morbidity And Treatment Of Clinically Important Obesity: An Internal Medicine Perspective, J. David Fachnie
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Obesity is defined as an excess storage of energy in the form of fat. The internist generates a differential diagnosis of etiologic factors and examines the patient carefully. Obese persons are counseled on all medical risks of obesity. Choices for treatment vary according lo the severity of the obesity, and alternative dietary treatments include a balanced-deficit diet or a very low calorie diet. Weight loss can be predicted by applying specified equations. With severe obesity, multidisciplinary treatment is needed. Anorexic agents have limited value because of their side effects and because of weight increase after discontinuing therapy. Obesity is not …

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of 132 morbidly obese individuals participating in a protein-sparing modified fast were examined via factor analytic methods yielding five interpretable psychometric factors. The results support the hypothesis that the morbidly obese are a psychologically heterogeneous population which can be subdivided conceptually. However, the findings fail to support the hypothesis that any particular psychopathology is intricately linked to the development of morbid obesity.

The Concept Of Prime Agricultural Land: A Western Australian Perspective, Vivian T. Read
The Concept Of Prime Agricultural Land: A Western Australian Perspective, Vivian T. Read
Resource management technical reports
In the past, resource planning by Government authorities in Western Australia has been concentrated in urban areas. The rural areas were referred to as non-urban and planning outside of country townsites was confined to special rural zones. These zones were determined by the State authority (Town Planning Department) and were intended to limit the extent of farm fragmentation so as to control servicing costs and possible conflict.
The new State Planning Commission is expected soon to introduce the requirement of rural planning strategies for Local Government Areas where demand for land subdivision is high. The strategies will be based on …
