New Elementary Agriculture, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, Goodwin D. Swezey Jan 1911

New Elementary Agriculture, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, Goodwin D. Swezey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

This is an agricultural nation. The products of the soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great Commonwealths should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. They should …

Botanical Teaching, Charles E. Bessey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Some months ago a suggestion was made that at this dinner we should ask ourselves the question: Why is it that with the enormous classes we are having in botany there is a marked dearth of properly trained men who can serve as instructors in colleges and universities?

Discussion And Correspondence Coupling Vs. Random Segregation, R. A. Emerson Jan 1911

Discussion And Correspondence Coupling Vs. Random Segregation, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

To the editor of science: The suggestion offered by Morgan, in SCIENCE of September 22, to account for the coupling and repulsion of factors for various characters in inheritance in such forms as Abraxas, Drosophila, fowls, sweet peas, etc., incites this note.

Briefly Morgan's hypothesis is (1) that the materials representing factors that couple are "near together in a linear series" in the chromosomes; (2) that, when pairs of parental chromosomes conjugate, "like regions stand opposed "; (3) that "homologous chromosomes twist around each other," but that the separation of chromosomes is in a single "plane"; (4) that, thereby the …

In the year 1905, Drainage Investigations were begun in the State of Utah by the Office of Experiment Stations of the United States Department of Agriculture, in co-operation with the Utah Experiment Station. Appropriations have been made by the Utah State Legislature for irrigation and drainage investigations on condition that the United 8tates Department of Agriculture contribute an equal amount, and that the work be conducted jointly by the Federal department and the experiment station of the Agricultural College of Utah.

Bulletin No. 109 - The Nitrogen And Humus Problem In Dry-Land Farming, Robert Stewart Aug 1910

Bulletin No. 109 - The Nitrogen And Humus Problem In Dry-Land Farming, Robert Stewart

UAES Bulletins

The effect of cultivation and the growth of crops upon the nitrogen and humus content of soils has been studied by various investigators, both in America and Europe. In general, the results of the various investigations indicate that cropping and cultivation are very destructive of the organic. matter and the nitrogen of the surface soil.

Organization And Polarity Of Protoplasm, John P. Munson Jan 1910

Organization And Polarity Of Protoplasm, John P. Munson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

In higher forms of life, we usually concede the presence of an organ specialized for the performance of a function. In these higher forms coordination of organs, which entails a regular sequence in their functions, is readily made out; and it seems a mere platitude to say, of these, that organization determines the functions of the organism. To what extent can functions exist in the absence of organization; does the one precede the other; or have function and organization developed simultaneously, out of matter devoid of both structure and function? In my studies on the cell, I have kept these …

Bulletin No 32 - Noxious Weeds And Poison Plants, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1910

Bulletin No 32 - Noxious Weeds And Poison Plants, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Many settlers, new to this State, find some difficulty in distinguishing those vegetable pests which are classed as noxious weeds, the eradication of which is made compulsory under the Noxious Weeds Act of 1904.

In order to facilitate the ready recognition of the plants which are the least familiar, the Department of Agriculture has prepared this Bulletin, giving illustrations of the several varieties which have been gazetted as noxious. these are: - Stinkwort, Bathurst Burr, Noogoorn Burr, Nut Bramble, Spanish Radish, Prickly Pear, Apple of Sodom, sweet Briar, Wild Bramble, Star Thistle (purple), Double Gee and Water hyacinth.

Bulletin No. 106 - A Study Of The Production And Movement Of Nitric Nitrogen In An Irrigated Soil, Robert Stewart, J. E. Greaves

UAES Bulletins

The problem of maintaining the nitrogen content in our agricultural soils is one of vital importance to the development of a permanent system of agriculture. Any investigation, therefore, which tends to throw any light on the conditions which are necessary for maintaining the maximum supply of nitrogen in our soils needs no apology for its institution.

Bulletin No. 105 - Factors Influencing Evaporation And Transpiration, John A. Widtsoe Aug 1909

Bulletin No. 105 - Factors Influencing Evaporation And Transpiration, John A. Widtsoe

UAES Bulletins

The irrigation investigations conducted by the Utah Experiment Station, some of the results of which form this *report, were undertaken for the purpose of adding to our knowledge of the natural laws upon which the art of irrigation may be safely built. The work has had for its dirrect object the study of the mutual relations of plants, soils and water, as these relations may indicate the most economic use of water for plant production. In pursuit of the investigations it became necessary not only to follow the movement of water in soils under irrigation conditions, but to determine also …

Bulletin No. 104 - The Storage Of Winter Precipitation In Soils, John A. Widtsoe Oct 1908

Bulletin No. 104 - The Storage Of Winter Precipitation In Soils, John A. Widtsoe

UAES Bulletins

It has been found that the production of one pound of dry plant substance on soils of average fertility, requires in humid districts not more than five hundred pounds of water, and in arid districts like Utah about seven hundred and fifty pounds. This indicates that the average rainfall of Utah, which is about twelve inches, if properly conserved in the soil, is sufficient to produce annually, without irrigation, from thirty to forty-five bushels of wheat to the acre, or corresponding yields of other crops. The realization of this truth has changed greatly our views of irrigation practices. The beginning …

Histological Studies In The Artemisia Formation, Raymond John Pool Oct 1908

Histological Studies In The Artemisia Formation, Raymond John Pool

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Many investigators have written on the subject of leaf histology and morphology in general, and a few have, in addition, touched upon the physiological significance of structures found during the progress of the study. Among these writers are Haberlandt, Pick, Stahl, Bonnier, Wagner, Hesselmann, and Clements. Most of the work, however, has been purely histological or morphological with little or no reference to environic forces. But in these later days of the development of the new ecology those forces or factors which have been potent in the evolution of plants and which are moulding plants today have come under careful …

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel Jul 1905

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following paper has to do with an investigation of the physical causes· which bring about opening and closing movements, periodic or otherwise, of certain flowers. With that end in view, seven different species of flowering plants have been experimented upon directly, a much larger number being simply observed with respect to the nature, time, etc., of their anthotropic movements. Movement consists in the corolla taking upon itself either the open or closed position for certain periods of the day or night; for example, the morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) opens early in the morning (from 4:00 to 5 …

UAES Circulars

The present series of irrigation investigations was begun in 1901, and has been continued since then. Since January 1st, 1904, the investigations have been carried on in co-operation with the Irrigation Investigations (Chief, Professor Elwood Mead) of the Office of Experiment Stations, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
