Gastrocolic And Duodenocolic Fistulas: An Experimental Study, Joseph L. Ponka, A. Karim Shaalan, P. C. Pesaros

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In an experimental study of gastrocolic and duodenocolic fistulas, it was clearly seen in 10 animals that duodenocolic fistulas result in the most serious loss of nutrition. Death from starvation occurred in all 42 animals in 30 days. Gastrocolic fistulas similarly resulted in weight loss and death of the animals in an average of 42 days. Lengthy fistulas between the stomach and colon caused no obvious disturbances in the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. The significant microscopic changes included destruction of the mucous membrane and a decrease in size of the villi. The other noteworthy observation was that fistulous aggregations …

A Study Designed To Establish Norms For The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test Utilizing Somatotypes, Dean A. Blevins Jun 1971

A Study Designed To Establish Norms For The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test Utilizing Somatotypes, Dean A. Blevins

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to develop norms for the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test in each somatotype classification as determined by the Heath-Carter anthropometric measurement. At the present time, norms exist only for the group as a whole which is comprised mainly of mesomorphs. This, of course, results in a great many endomorphs who score poorly, or not at all, and some ectomorphs who also do poorly. It is proposed that endomorphs, ectomorphs, and mesomorphs should each have their own norms.

Phytoplankton Periodicity In Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky, David Hill May 1971

Phytoplankton Periodicity In Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky, David Hill

Properties Of Salmonella Phage P3 After Subjection To Host-Controlled Modification By Passage Through E. Coli K-12, Benjamin J. Siapco

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Five new bacteriophages were isolated from lysogenic S. potsdam in this laboratory. Group B phages (P3 and P9a) were found to have unique properties, including their capability to infect strains of E. coli K-12 and E. coli C+/L. Passage of the phages through these hosts modified them (host-controlled modification) so that their ability to infect their original host, S. potsdam, was reduced and only 1-4 per million were able to form plaques.

To help elucidate the biochemical basis of host-controlled modification in the Salmonella potsdam group of bacteriophages, the clear plaque mutant of one of them, P3-c …

Bacterial Receptor Sites For Uptake Of Transforming Dna, Douglas Pierre Bingham May 1971

Bacterial Receptor Sites For Uptake Of Transforming Dna, Douglas Pierre Bingham

Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial transformation is defined as a mechanism of genetic exchange whereby a population of bacteria can obtain genetic informa-tion as a result of cellular uptake and integration of extracellular deoxyribonucleic acid released from other bacteria by natural or in-duced lysis. In order for a transformable strain of bacteria to take up DNA and to undergo transformation, the cells must be in a physiolog-ical state called competence. A cell is referred to as competent if it has the ability to bind extracellular DNA irreversibly and subsequently to integrate and express the DNA.

Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr. May 1971

Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The urolithiasis condition investigated occurred at a "hard water" hatchery in Utah after the trout were changed from a meat diet to a commercial pelleted fish feed as a sole sustaining diet in 1961. Numerous diet modifications proved unsuccessful in preventing urolithiasis at the hatchery. It was eventually determined that different commercial diets resulted in varied percentages of trout developing urolithiasis. The urolithic deposits found in the kidney tubules were amorphous and composed of calcium phosphate (apatite) and an organic matrix. Bacterial contamination of the kidneys was not an important factor in the formation of urolithiasis. Rainbow trout containing urolithic …

Productivity of both herds was low. Lamb mortality was high and recruitment to the breeding herd low. Low recruitment rates coupled with hunting pressure caused a decline in the ram component of both …

Protein Needs Throughout The Life Cycle, Mei-You Tsai May 1971

Protein Needs Throughout The Life Cycle, Mei-You Tsai

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In most countries in Africa and in South and East Asia the foods which are produced do not provide adequate diets, or in some areas, not enough food for the population. In most areas, it is not the severe shortage of food supplies, but inequality of food distribution and the quality of the diet as influenced by deficiencies of individual nutrients. One of the most severe deficiencies is in protein because of the poor quality and imbalanced diets due to lack of nutritional knowledge and ignorance of the special needs of large groups of people such as pregnant and lactating …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Maximal amounts of prodigiosin were synthesized in either minimal or complete medium after incubation of cultures at 27 C for 7 days. Biosynthesis of prodigiosin began earlier and the range of temperature for formation was greater in complete medium. No prodigiosin was formed in either medium when cultures were incubated at 38 C; however, after a shift to 27 C, pigmentation ensued, provided the period of incubation at 38 C was not longer than 36 hr for minimal medium or 48 hr for complete medium. Washed, nonpigmented cells grown in either medium at 38 C for 72 hr could synthesize …

The Effects And Desirability Of Utilizing Dried Whey In Selected Food Products, Katherine P. Robinson May 1971

The Effects And Desirability Of Utilizing Dried Whey In Selected Food Products, Katherine P. Robinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects and desirability of utilizing dried whey in pie crust, muffins, and beef gravies were studied using taste panel evaluations and objective testings.

In pastry the addition of whey caused significant changes. As the whey level increased to 10 percent of the flour weight, the crust became browner during baking and the shortometer recorded an increase in tenderness. The taste panel noted as whey levels increased to 10 percent and above that the color became yellow instead of creamy white; the flavor became undesirable; and pastry became less tender and flaky.

Whey significantly increased the desirability of muffins by …

Fine structural analyses of host tissue (alfalfa, Medicago sativa L.) response to infection by the stem nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci Kühn) were conducted. Hypocotyl regions were taken on 1,3 and 7 days after inoculation.

Electron micrographs of infected tissue indicated the types of damage were the same between Lahontan (tolerant line) and Ranger (susceptible line). Only the infection rate (in percent) and degree of damage were different between lines and among the different temperatures (15, 20 and 25 C). The higher the temperature, the more injury resulted. After 3 to 7 days of infection, the symptoms observed were swelling and …

An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley May 1971

An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The oral plate sense organs of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., have been investigated employing an electrophysiological technique which allows simultaneous stimulation and recording.

The results of the study present evidence that the four bipolar sense cells innervating the sensory papillae on the oral surface of the hypopharynx are chemoreceptors. The sensory papillae respond to cations, glucose, water, and amino acids. Evidence for the absence of a mechanosensory cell is presented. The data concerning the sensory structures agree with the current theories of chemoreception.

Type Appraisal: Ii. Variation In Type Traits Due To Sires, Herds, And Years, H. D. Norman, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Variance components were estimated from type appraisal data to determine the importance of year, herd, sire, and herd x sire effects upon 49 body, udder, and management traits. Estimates were based on over 16,000 appraisals on daughters of Holstein artificial insemination sires. The variation explained by these effects never exceeded 34% of the total variance. Year effects were almost nonexistent (-2 to 3%). Herd effects were small for all traits except feeding speed, body weight, intensity and persistency of edema, and ketosis, and never exceeded 25%.

Most appraisal traits had low heritabilities. The estimate for milking speed was .23 while …
