Productivity Of The Roll-Streak Method To Perform Anaerobic Bacteriology In The Routine Clinical Laboratory, Thomas R. Neblett

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Data presented are derived from one year of performing routine clinical anaerobic bacteriology by the roll-streak tube method. 826 specimens from 1508 (54.8%) contained anaerobes. 162 specimens were polymicrobic (19.6%) and contained 528 strains of a total of 1051 isolated (50.2 %). 479 blood specimens contained 525 strains of anaerobes. Propionibacterium, considered a contaminant, occurred 209/210 times in blood as the sole isolate. Bacteroides occurred alone or polymicrobically 308 times and comprised 54.7% of the blood isolates and 32.5% of the total anaerobic genera isolated. Clostridium, Peptococcus and Fusobacterium were the next most frequently occurring anaerobes. The roll-streak method is …

Effects Of Cariogenic And Noncariogenic Diets On The Concentration Of The Parotid Hormone Releasing Factor In Rat Hypothalami, Melva Joan Brown Jun 1976

Effects Of Cariogenic And Noncariogenic Diets On The Concentration Of The Parotid Hormone Releasing Factor In Rat Hypothalami, Melva Joan Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypothalamic and cortical extracts from various cariogenically grouped rats which had been maintained on either a Purina diet or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for three months were infused intravenously into 28 days old rats to determine if there was a titer of parotid hormone releasing factor (PRF) capable of facilitating fluid movement (FM) in the teeth. The hypothalamic and cortical extracts obtained from Purina-fed rats with 0-caries and the hypothalamic extracts from BSD-fed rats conclusively demonstrated FM stimulatory ability. Other Purina-fed groups were essentially biologically ineffective, however, extracts from HSD-fed caries groups including scores 11-40 demonstrated extremely potent FM …

Triage, Howard B. Peterson May 1976

Triage, Howard B. Peterson

Faculty Honor Lectures

Throughout most of this century Utah State University has been developing its competence to a position of eminence in the science and art of irrigation and related fields of agriculture and engineering. It has accepted the responsibility to train local as well as international students and through a contract with USAID, conduct research in developing countries. Thus, we in irrigation find ourselves an integral part of the U.S. strategy to assist in closing the gap in development and hopefully winning the battle against world famine. To many this seems hopeless, and it may be, but I have a feeling that …

The Horse Population Of Utah And Its Impact, Scott Stewart Mckendrick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

PART I

The horse numbers of Utah had not been accurately counted since the early 1960's. It was estimated that horse and pony numbers were reaching heights as recorded before the age of tractors and automobiles. Horsemen in Utah were asking for financial assistance for public horse facilities from the Utah legislature. The first part of this study was to survey the horse population to determine an accurate count of Utah horses.

PART II

In order to be satisfied that the horse industry deserved the spending of public funds, it was necessary to know the economic contribution of the horse …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the highly competitive cattle market of today a scientific method, by which a rancher can base a judgement, moderated by experience as to which animals are to be kept, as proven by superior performance, can be a valuable asset.

This record performance testing system was designed to demonstrate the value of adequately kept records. Its purpose is to help ranchers develop records of herd performance, inventory, and improve management practices by more informed decisions. The system, through its representative, provides a means by which ranchers can obtain information on new ideas in animal production, health, sanitation, nutrition, management practices, …

Quantitation Of Aliphatic Aldehydes In Rancid Turkey Meat Using A Substituted Hydrazone, Stanley J. Andrews May 1976

Quantitation Of Aliphatic Aldehydes In Rancid Turkey Meat Using A Substituted Hydrazone, Stanley J. Andrews

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many objective chemical tests have attempted to correlate with organoleptic evaluation of oxidative rancidity. Major chemical tests used to detect oxidative rancidity of lipids measure nonvolatile high molecular weight carbonylic substances which make no considerable contribution to rancid flavors. High molecular weight carbonyls are present at much greater concentrations than volatile low molecular weight carbonyls. Peroxides and other unknown substances also react in these chemical tests to give at best an empirical evaluation. A 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone chemical test is proposed which corrected some deficiencies of earlier procedures, and was correlated with organoleptic evaluation of rancid turkey samples. The proposed test …

Forage Selection And Nutrition Of Sheep And Goats Grazing In The Tunisian Pre-Sahara, Rudolfo Ricardo Griego May 1976

Forage Selection And Nutrition Of Sheep And Goats Grazing In The Tunisian Pre-Sahara, Rudolfo Ricardo Griego

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nomadic pastoralism has been the traditional method of utilizing grazing resources in arid and semi-arid regions of Africa. However, increased sedentarization accompanied by growing human and animal populations during the past two decades is thought to be accelerating the desertification process, or desert expansion. The specific interactions of the grazing animal with this process has been speculated upon but not studied in detail. A comparative study was initiated during the spring grazing season of 1974 to determine sheep and goat nutritional and production responses, as well as patterns of vegetative selection and utilization under the pastoral system currently employed in …

Thiamin and riboflavin dietary levels were evaluated using the Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ), to determine the quality of the diet according to the total calories consumed. Seasonal differences between fall and spring data were evaluated.

Plasma vitamin A, plasma …

Nitrogen Cycling In A Microcosm Simulation Of The Northern Arm Of The Great Salt Lake, John C. Stube May 1976

Nitrogen Cycling In A Microcosm Simulation Of The Northern Arm Of The Great Salt Lake, John C. Stube

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen cycling was studied in the hypersaline northern arm of the Great Salt Lake (332,480 mg/l total dissolved solids) using a sediment-water microcosm simulation of that system. The study demonstrated that nitrate, ammonia, and urea were not stimulating to the halophilic bacteria in the microcosm. The bacteria were simulated only indirectly simulated bacterial growth. In addition, no nitrification could be demonstrated during the study.

Weekly analyses of water samples from the north arm of the lake itself showed that nitrate and nitrite were absent, leaving ammonia as the only significant form of inorganic nitrogen in the northern lake basin. Other …

Insect Consumption Of Seeded Rangeland Herbage In A Selected Area Of Diamond Fork Canyon, Utah County, Utah, Diane M. Bowers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study compares insect and cattle consumption of crested wheatgrass (Agropycon spp.) on a site in Sterling Ranch, Utah County, Utah. The hypothesis tested is that insect consumption in general, and specifically consumption by Labops hesperius Uhler, significantly reduces total available cattle forage.

Labops and grasshoppers were probably the major cause of secondary damage at the study site, while the impact of thrips is unknown. A detrimental impact on range was suggested by the data, as insects consumed forage equivalent to 2.8 animal units per month, while cattle consumed forage equivalent to 2.1 animal units per month at the …

Seasonal changes in the body component indexes of Littorina irrorata were studied for a two year period. Biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrates, and lipids) in the soft body components were analyzed for one year. Body component indexes cycled seasonally. Shell index changes may be due to the seasonal changes in the total of other indexes. All soft body components, except the foot, exhibited a seasonal cycle which was correlated with the reproductive cycle. Female Littorina irrorata appeared to exhibit a bimodal pattern of capsule deposition with the two peaks occurring in May and August. Seasonal changes in the biochemical level and …

Effect Of Supplemental Food On Population Estimates And Mortality Rates Of Desert Rodents In Utah, J. Steven Thiriot Apr 1976

Effect Of Supplemental Food On Population Estimates And Mortality Rates Of Desert Rodents In Utah, J. Steven Thiriot

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to assess the effects of various quantities of supplemental food (seed) on population estimates and mortality rates of desert rodents . The supplemental food is meant to stimulate natural vegetational productivity. If food availability significantly affects the population parameters methods of population estimators previously used may be in error. Hopefully this study will aid small mannnal research by designating whether, in part, population estimates and mortality rates are in error because of high vegetational productivity. The hypothesis of this study is that supplemental food in the natural environment decreases population estimates and mortality rates …
