Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn
Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

X-Linked Diseases With Cataract, Philip J. Howard
X-Linked Diseases With Cataract, Philip J. Howard
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
X-linked cataracts are a rare group and appear as a complication of other disease. Changes in the lens are difficult to visualize and the family history may alert the examiner to the possibility of cataractous changes. This paper is a review of 13 sex-linked conditions with cataract as a possible complication. Cataracts may be present in an occasional case or in some instances in every case. Short abstracts follow of Fabry's disease, glucose 6-dehydrogenase deficiency, myotonic dystrophy, ectodermal hypohidriotic dysplasia, oculocerebral syndrome, keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans with cataract, Norrie disease, incontinenti pigmenti, hypoparathyroidism due to a sex-linked recessive trait, pseudohypopara-thyroidism, …
Alfalfa Response To Varying Rates Of Phosphorus And Potassium Fertilization On Deep, Red, Limestone - Derived Soils Of The Pennyroyal Area In Kentucky, H. C. Vaught, Kenneth L. Wells, K. L. Driskill
Alfalfa Response To Varying Rates Of Phosphorus And Potassium Fertilization On Deep, Red, Limestone - Derived Soils Of The Pennyroyal Area In Kentucky, H. C. Vaught, Kenneth L. Wells, K. L. Driskill
Agronomy Notes
The Western Pennyroyal area of Kentucky consists largely of deep, well-drained limestone-derived soils occurring on an undulating to rolling landscape. A thin loess mantle overlies the limestone residuum in many areas. Soils on these landscapes are capable of good crop production, providing the basis of the rather intensive grain-hay- tobacco-livestock farming systems common to the Pennyroyal area. Because of the well-suited physical characteristics of these soils, alfalfa is a very important hay crop to this area.

An Analysis Of Species Recognition In Sympatric, Allopatric And Reciprocally Cross-Fostered Peromyscus Californicus And Peromyscus Eremicus (Rodentia, Cricetidae), Ronald L. Carter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Experiments were performed to compare homospecific and heterospecific mate selection in two closely related species, Peromyscus californicus and Peromyscus eremicus. Comparisons were made between allopatric and sympatric populations and between males and females for mate selection performance. Both species made significant choice for the homospecific chambers. Significant homospecific choice was made by mice from sympatric populations, whereas allopatric populations did not demonstrate significant choice. No significant difference in choice performance was demonstrated between males and females even when the estrus stages of the females were controlled.
A comparison of different testing lengths and temporal regimes of data collection was performed …
Climatic Implications Of Barbados Coral Growth, Richard E. Dodge, Karl K. Turekian, J. Rimas Vaisnys
Climatic Implications Of Barbados Coral Growth, Richard E. Dodge, Karl K. Turekian, J. Rimas Vaisnys
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Results from a coral growth band analysis utilizing samples of M. annularis from the Recent Barbados reef and from three fossil raised reefs (Barbados I, II, and III dated at 82,000, 105,000, and 125,000 yrs. B.P.) indicate that in the Barbados II collection both average band width and variability were lower than in the other samples. We suggest the climate during formation of the 105,000 yrs. B.P. reef was significantly different than that of the present.

Diet Composition And Activities Of Elk On Different Habitat Segments In The Lodgepole Pine Type, Uinta Mountains, Utah, William B. Collins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The biweekly diets of tame elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) were established on a species dry-weight basis for different habitat segments of the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) type, Principal species in the diets (5% or more) on each habitat segment were generally composed of preferred species. However, some highly abundant but non-preferred species took on principal dietary status, whereas some preferred species, scarce in the vegetation, contributed less than 5 percent to diets. Forbs contributed most to total consumption; grasses and sedges were the second largest contributors. Browse appeared to be of limited importance, but mushrooms had …
Forage Preferences Of Mule Deer In The Lodgepole Pine Ecosystem, Ashley National Forest, Utah, Joseph A. Deschamp
Forage Preferences Of Mule Deer In The Lodgepole Pine Ecosystem, Ashley National Forest, Utah, Joseph A. Deschamp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the summer of 1976, five tame, trained mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) were used to determine botanical composition and relative preference of mule deer diets on five habitat segments in the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) ecosystem of northeastern Utah. Diets were statistically analyzed according to estimated weight consumption per unit of time spent feeding on the different segments. Habitat segments sampled were: clearcut forest, dry and wet meadow, mature forest, and stagnated forest.
Diets differed between segments mainly because of differences in plant species available and their abundance. The diets in the non-forested segments averaged …
